Home / Ceiling design / Design solutions / Features and options for laying combined laminate flooring
Floors made of laminated panels have long won the palm among all types of similar design. The excellent performance characteristics of laminate combined with its low cost make it possible to call this type of finishing optimal. However, coating in one color scheme can look a little boring and quickly become boring. Therefore, another design option has appeared: a combined laminate floor of different colors, as in the photo examples in this article.
Why is this necessary?
Such solutions are used for various reasons - some do not like a uniform surface, others want to experiment with design, and in some cases it is necessary to use parts with different resistance to damage or water resistance. In addition, there are other advantages of this design technique:
- You can simulate space by visually increasing or decreasing the size of the room.
- Using different textures and colors of the coating, you can highlight certain areas in the room.
- Create a unique design that will make your home stand out.
- Use details of different colors to create the most harmonious combination of shades in the interior.
At the same time, it is possible to reduce repair costs if, in certain areas that are more susceptible to wear, planks with a protective coating are laid, and the rest of the floor area is decorated with less expensive parts that do not have such an outer layer.
When using a combination of different colors
In some cases, a combination of shades can be a real salvation for a room. Well-chosen color schemes help in zoning rooms and make them expressive. For example, this technique should be used if:
You are renovating a studio apartment. A spacious room without partitions gives real scope for imagination. Each shade of laminate that you lay here will clearly delimit the areas of the apartment: kitchen, living room, etc.- The hallway smoothly flows into the living room. Using laminate of different colors you can emphasize and beautifully play up this transition.
- You need to delimit the room into zones. Just as in the case of a studio apartment, only here one room is divided into zones.
- You want a contrasting floor. For example, you can alternate dark and light boards, which will create a beautiful effect.
Note! When combining material of two or more colors, the size and shape of the tiles must match, otherwise it will be almost impossible to join them into one pattern.
How to combine colors
When using laminate to create a combined floor, you must adhere to certain rules when selecting the color scheme of the plates. The most important points are:
- In rooms with light walls, a reddish laminate will look great. It gives the interior an unusual and attractive look.
- It is not recommended to use combinations of panel colors that are similar to the colors of walls, furniture and other interior details.
- In the kitchen area, bathroom or other places with high traffic and humidity, it is better to lay panels with a protective layer of polymer film. They are designated as “water resistant” and have a class of at least 33.
- In rooms decorated in cold colors, a grayish or greenish shade will look better. A white coating would also be an excellent choice, but it has one drawback - all flaws and defects will be clearly visible on the surface.
- In rooms with warm-toned walls, a contrasting tone of panels is perfect - this combination of colors looks very organic. However, a light-colored flooring would also be an excellent choice.
- In small rooms it is better to use light-colored types of planks.
- You should not combine more than three types of dies in one room - it will be too colorful.
The most popular options will be: all combinations of white with other colors, combining two different shades of the same color, black and white surface. All these options can be used in rooms of any size. However, you should carefully combine bright colors - they can make the decor too busy and distract attention from the rest of the design, pushing it into the background. If white color is used, then there should be as much of it as possible to visually expand the space.
Combination options
To make it easier to select color combinations for laminate flooring and surrounding interior items, we will group these combinations into a table. This will make it easier to select the connection between the laminate and walls, doors and furniture.
Laminate color | Color of interior items |
White beech, bleached oak, bleached birch, beige, ivory, light cream | Dark wenge |
Brown | Red cherry, red chestnut, any red-brown tones. |
Yellow, red shades | Green, light brown, orange, terracotta |
Gray shade | Grayscale, blue |
Dark colors | Wenge, dark red, dark blue, generally dark shades |
Laying methods
Having decided on the shades, you can begin to choose a method for laying the parts. There are three most popular options: diagonal, rarely used, parallel - the most common and in the form of various geometric patterns. The latter type of installation is used in large rooms, since you can appreciate the overall picture only when there is space for laying fairly large parts, and in small rooms there is simply not enough space for this.
The other two methods are at your discretion. By laying multi-colored panels in parallel, you can lengthen the room or make it visually wider - it depends on which direction you install the dies. The diagonal method is used very rarely, as it affects the direction of view too much - it follows the lines formed by the multi-colored stripes of the laminate. The space may feel a little smaller than it actually is.
Combination of doors, floor and walls
Walls also cannot be thrown out of the equation; they occupy most of the visible space and set the tone for the interior. Here you can go in two ways: contrasting or “invisible”. Let's see how it works.
Instead of related shades and smooth transitions, you can choose contrast. There are different options for contrasting combinations. For example: dark floor + bright walls + white doors. Or: dark doors against a background of light walls and a light floor. Or: bright doors against a background of light or dark trim. In the latter case, the presence of a bright shade in the space should be supported by furniture or accessories.
The point is to turn the doors into an interior accent, highlighting them against the background of the wall through color and/or texture.
The second way to combine floors, walls and doors is to make sure that all the attention goes to the floor. At the same time, the doors “dissolve” in the walls, merging with them in color and texture, and contrasting with the floor covering.
Examples
You can form your own opinion about this method of interior design by looking at several photo examples demonstrating what a combined laminate floor looks like. They will help you decide whether you need such a finish and which of its variations is more suitable for your home.
How to choose doors for laminate?
Date: July 5, 2019
In an ideal interior, all elements are harmonious and combine well with each other, the room looks complete. To achieve this result, when decorating a space you need to adhere to the basic rules of matching materials, colors and shades. It should be taken into account that laminate flooring and doors will last a long time. Therefore, options for combining them should be considered at the initial stage of repair.
Dark shades
As for floors in dark tones, they are perhaps a platform for creating a stylish and winning interior filled with contrasts:
- Such floors can be ideally combined with light shades: peach, light beige, baked milk or ivory.
Attention: The important point here is that the color used should not be pure white, because it will create the feeling of a “hospital ward”, and you yourself will not notice how you will begin to get tired, the mental irritation and nervousness of everyone in this room will increase.
- But it is also better not to use completely black , so that the room does not seem gloomy and does not create the effect of reducing the space and there is not enough air in it. After all, a dark color still burdens perception and does not always set a person up for a cozy and comfortable pastime in it, not counting, of course, premises like nightclubs.
- But any bright colors can very well enliven your room ; you can use them not only as materials, but also as an interior item. This could be a brightly colored lampshade for a lamp or a shade for a chandelier or unusual wallpaper; rugs on a dark floor will also look very advantageous.
Ways to visually change the size and dimensions of a room using color
In a small apartment, you should not carry out zoning, using different types and shades of laminate for each zone. This will visually reduce it even more. To make a narrow room seem square, you should lay tiles with dark stripes perpendicular to the long wall. And boards with long thin strips laid along the selected wall can “stretch” the room. When using a light laminated coating together with white or pale beige wallpaper, there is a danger that the entire room will merge into one flat sheet. To avoid this, choose boards 3-4 shades darker than the finishing materials for the walls.
Several colors in the coating pattern
In the case when you have decided to finish the floor with a material containing several color shades, such as:
- Rosewood;
- Zebrano;
- Tiger tree.
You should choose the finishing of the entrance so that it is in harmony with at least one of the colors of the flooring. The best option in such a situation would be to order or create a 3D interior design for the room with your own hands. This will allow you to most accurately select the laminate that is most suitable for your conditions.
Colors with names for laminate flooring
Selecting shades of laminate flooring is not an easy task, because it is important that it matches all the objects in the room. Moreover, if you are laying it for the first time, then first of all you need to choose it correctly. This coating will last for many years, so first of all it should create a style for the apartment as a whole. Usually in stores they offer to look at photos with the names of the colors of the laminate flooring, but in order to be able to choose faster, it is better to first familiarize yourself with the main colors of the laminate flooring.
The color range in which modern laminate flooring is currently produced is very rich and extensive.
The classic options are the following laminate colors:
- birch;
- cherry;
- oak;
- wenge;
- light and dark walnut.

Subtle colors
If you often face stressful situations and are in constant tension, then it is recommended to make the visit bright:
- Pale and not dark tones evoke associations with purity; instinctively a person has a feeling of relaxation, and he forgets about time.
- If you add cool tones to the walls, peace of mind will reign in the room.
- There is one advantage: soft colors go well with various shades. And if you choose dark furniture for light wooden floors, you will gain contrast and a feeling of antique and expensive.
Important! However, in these matters, the most important thing is not to overdo it. If the room faces north or west, then you need to know that the lighter the color of the floor, the cooler the atmosphere in the room will be.
It's no secret that designers often use a technique when something made antique is more highly valued. Also in the future, the interior will have tulle and curtains, which can be perfectly combined with the soft colors of the floor covering.
White laminate – pros, cons
Not very often, but quite regularly, you have to lay white laminate, in English “White”. During the telephone conversation, when we reach agreement on the price, I find out the brand of laminate, characteristics and color.
Color, of course, does not affect the installation price, but it can tell you in advance what problems may arise during the flooring process, so that you don’t have to make excuses to customers later. And if you didn’t buy laminate, I will make a modest attempt to dissuade you from purchasing white laminate. Here's an example
First, let's clarify that laminate comes with or without chamfer. You can read which one is better in this article.
Among the positive qualities, I would note that the white color of the laminate expands the space and looks great. Design architects often combine white flooring with other interior items in displays.
White laminate harmonizes perfectly:
To some extent, white flooring emphasizes and emphasizes other interior items. The main thing is not to overdo it, otherwise you will lose the idea.
For the pure white color of laminate, the choice is much more modest than for other colors. It is very difficult to find coverage up to 500 rubles per m2. The reason for this is the high visibility of defects in the product and the possible large number of complaints from customers.

Reverse selection: wallpaper for laminate
When developing interior design, attention is paid to the combination of three elements: wallpaper (walls), laminate and doors. Their color solutions should form a thoughtful composition, and usually the shade of the laminate is matched to the color of the wallpaper. The reason is that this is almost the only type of flooring that is laid after wallpapering, because the drying of wallpaper glue damages the laminate more than its flooring can stain already finished walls. However, sometimes you have to select the material in the reverse order, for example, if the flooring is good and will last another ten years, but the wallpaper is already worn out, obsolete and requires replacement.
There is nothing complicated about reverse selection. If you are generally satisfied with the original style, design and appearance, the best and easiest way is to find wallpaper that is as similar as possible to the one to be replaced. If you want to change the style or design, then you need to select the color and pattern of the wallpaper based on the design of the floor covering and your desires, based on the same principles and rules for compatibility of shades. Let's consider the main solutions for all five color types of laminate:
- wallpaper of almost any color will suit a light floor, except for light tones: beige, white, light gray, otherwise the interior will turn out empty and uncomfortable;
- On the contrary, light wallpaper is ideal for a dark floor; Bright and pale yellows, reds, greens, blues (except dark shades) also go well together;
- for warm-colored floors, it is better to choose wallpaper in cool tones: blue, gray, purple, green (but not light green), perhaps red or crimson;
- Light wallpapers will suit a dark brown floor, rich colored ones will suit a light brown floor; dark and light brown tones go well together;
- choose colored wallpaper for gray floors, otherwise the interior will turn out empty and cold; light gray laminate goes with dark gray walls and vice versa.
If the flooring and walls are the same light color, you need the wallpaper to be two to four shades darker. As a result, the interior should not be too dark or too light - with a long stay in it, both extremes will tire the eyesight and consciousness. Be careful with bright red-violet wallpaper: such colors are not typical for nature, so they may be perceived as heavier than natural ones.
Popular art styles
In this photo, the interior is made in a style reminiscent of Provence: light brown laminate harmonizes perfectly with white walls and ceiling and light furniture.
It is necessary to choose the color and texture of the laminate taking into account the style in which the interior of each room of your house, cottage or apartment is designed. No designer can name the exact number of styles, but almost all of their current variety can be fairly accurately distributed into the following three groups:
- Classic styles. The main features are restrained forms, a small number of decorations and small elements, competent color solutions in compliance with the ideal rules of color and color science. Classic is the golden mean between ancient luxury and minimalism. Panels of any natural color with imitation wood and, to a lesser extent, stone are suitable for it.
- Pastoral styles. Country, Provence, rustic style, etc. In many ways they are similar to the classics, but they are also characterized by small decorations and details that serve as accents, an abundance of textiles, weaving, and natural materials. Provence is also characterized by light colors. The choice here is panels with imitation wood or stone, in appropriate shades, with the simplest possible installation.
- Modern styles. These are minimalism, hi-tech, Scandinavian style, etc. Common features are maximum simplicity of design, straight lines, simple colors, complete absence of decoration, predominance of light colors. For high-tech, a laminate with metal imitation is suitable; for any modern style - any light wood or stone panels, panels of any pure color or with a gradient.
There is another group of styles that can conventionally be called pompous. These are baroque, empire style, oriental luxury, etc. Characteristic features are a visually rich appearance, an abundance of gilding, small decorative details, etc. In this style, leather-look panels, golden-colored laminate, warm natural tones, any shades would be very appropriate panels that look expensive and luxurious, panels with patterns and subject images. Such styles in the interiors of modern houses are becoming less and less popular, so laminate with a similar design is less common than classic options.
Choosing a laminate
As you know, laminate boards are a material that imitates various types of wood. Therefore, the pattern on its front surface will always correspond to the natural structure of the rock that is being copied.
Choice of laminate color
On a note! The set of shades can be not only the same as the wood in its natural form. To achieve more noble tones, wood is subjected to various types of chemical and heat treatments, and it is these colors that laminate can imitate.

Style and color
Each style has its own palette, from which you should not deviate. By introducing, for example, neon colors into a classic interior, you will get kitsch on the verge of bad taste.
Physiologically, a person evaluates an environment as safe and stable when the darkest shade is underfoot, the midtones are at eye level, and sky-white shades extend above the head.
At the same time, modern interiors indicate that designers love to play pranks and turn everything upside down. Therefore, we can find chocolate and even black stretch ceilings over beige and white floors.
So, here is a style sheet and color schemes.

If you follow the designers' recommendations and use color palettes that suit your style, you will always win. Use the color wheel in situations when you are in doubt about choosing a particular interior element. Better yet, trust the masters to create the project. In this case, your home is guaranteed to be decorated tastefully and in full accordance with the chosen style.
Gray laminate color is the most practical - expert review
The practicality of gray color lies in the fact that at any angle of incidence of light, the joints of the bevelless material are practically invisible. Housewives know that when washing floors, the area of the lock joint is most vulnerable to abrasion. In gray material it is possible to make the edge darker. Over time, the difference in color will not be as striking as in plain materials.
The colors of the parquet board, where the annual rings of the tree are presented in all their glory, will remain attractive longer, regardless of the color, since uneven coloring is inherent in the material from the very beginning.
For your information. Fashionable gray color has the same resistance to abrasion as brown, yellow and others, which directly depends only on the thickness and strength of the protective layer and the loads on it.
