How to properly glue PVC mosaic panels - types and properties of the material

Mosaic PVC panels are a reasonable alternative to expensive ceramic tiles. This coating is highly wear-resistant, does not scratch, does not allow moisture to pass through, and is not susceptible to the effects of steam and temperature changes. Due to its unique properties, mosaics can be installed in the bathroom, on a backsplash in the kitchen, in the hallway or pantry. This material does not require any significant maintenance - simple wet cleaning is sufficient, and it can be mounted either on a specially made aluminum or wooden frame, or on ordinary liquid nails.

How to fit it into the interior?

Mosaic panels are so versatile that they will be an advantageous option for any bathroom design.
The design can be diversified by a combination of contrasting colors or a gradual transition from one shade to another. Another original approach is to combine several materials in the cladding, for example, panels and tiles, which allows you to divide the room into zones. This technique is relevant when renovating a combined bathroom. When creating your own decor style, you can play with the direction of laying the panels - arrange them vertically, diagonally, horizontally, or a combination. Vertical design can visually make the ceiling higher, while horizontal design will create the illusion of a wide room.

A panel made from mosaic panels also looks advantageous. Here everything depends on your imagination; you can create an image of expanses of water or an opening flower, mountains and castles, faces of characters from books and films. When choosing a color, it is advised to give preference to burgundy, brown, black or beige; they give the room a noble look. In addition, the shade of turquoise, pearl and blue has gained great popularity.

Adherents of the classics can combine black and white tones in the design of the bathroom, combining them into an original ornament. It can be a checkerboard pattern or alternating stripes. A significant advantage of this design is its versatility, since it harmonizes with any decorative components.

Choice for a spacious bathroom

When decorating a large bathroom with mosaics, it should be taken into account that in this situation, space can lead to the loss of the feeling of comfort and homeliness. Therefore, the technique of visual narrowing is used here in order to make the environment more “domesticated”.

Do not use plain wall cladding. This will lead to the fact that you will get a dull interior, which even bright decorative elements cannot correct. It is best if only opposite walls are finished the same way.

Another option is to divide the room into functional areas: shower, sink, toilet. The main emphasis is on light colors, dark ones are used as cladding, to give an accent.

Manufacturers of plastic panels

PVC panels belong to the middle price segment. Russian construction stores mostly stock products from domestic companies and brands. Of course, if you wish, you can also find products from foreign companies, but their cost will be noticeably higher.

Among domestic manufacturers of mosaic PVC panels, the following companies deserve special attention:

Plastdecor is one of the best domestic enterprises specializing in the production of polyvinyl chloride coatings. The company began its activities back in 2003 and today is the largest manufacturer in its industry. Plastdecor cooperates with many construction companies and specialized stores, so a considerable range of products of this brand can be found in almost any city in the country. All materials are produced using modern high-tech equipment. At the same time, the company not only uses generally accepted production schemes, but also introduces its own technological methods, which can significantly improve the quality of the coatings produced.

Decoplast - the company has been producing PVC panels since 1999. The brand has its own plant for the production of finishing materials, and the constant introduction of new methods and ways of working allows not only to significantly improve quality, but also to produce fundamentally new types of coatings. All of the company’s products undergo a two-level control system, which allows us to weed out products that do not meet the requirements even at the initial stage of production. Decoplast PVC boards fully comply with domestic and international standards. The products of this brand have often received awards and quality certificates.

Reviews

Daniil, 26 years old

I bought PVC mosaic panels for the bathroom. I chose the material from the middle price category, so I settled on Decoplast panels. In principle, the coverage is completely worth the money. The color is bright, I didn’t find any flaws either. And there are many options for both texture and colors - there is plenty to choose from. I mounted the panels myself using liquid nails. The sheets fit perfectly. Nothing comes off anywhere, and the seams are practically invisible.

I decorated the kitchen apron with Plastdecor mosaic PVC panels. Visually you can’t tell it apart from tiles, and the cost is several times lower. And installation is much easier and faster. If in the case of mosaic tiles you need to turn to professionals, then PVC panels can be installed by yourself. No special knowledge is required here. This coverage is relatively inexpensive, but fully justifies all costs. Plus, it does not require any special care. Simple wet cleaning is quite enough, and any detergent can be used.

Advantages

Let's look at the basic properties.

  • Fire resistance. The temperature at which the panel can catch fire is more than 500°C. But its main difference from other panels is that it does not ignite in air.
  • Moisture resistance. Mosaic does not allow water to pass through, even at the joints. Therefore, it has found wide application in the decoration of saunas, baths, bathrooms and bathrooms.
  • Increased sound protection. The structure of the panel disperses sound and makes it quieter. This is possible thanks to the cells of which it consists.
  • Flexibility. Due to their flexibility, mosaic panels are used in a wide variety of design solutions.
  • Not afraid of mechanical damage, no need to worry about the safety of the coating.
  • Light weight and quick installation.
  • Long service life. The material contains elements that prevent the growth of fungus. The panels don't rot.
  • Good thermal insulation.
  • Antibacterial properties.
  • Ease of processing. Mosaic sheets can be bent, cut, sawed, cut out geometric shapes, and holes can be easily made in it.
  • Environmental friendliness. Does not contain heavy metals or toxic substances.
  • Chemical resistance. The coating is not susceptible to regular wiping with household chemicals.

Mosaic sheets are produced using free foaming technology of polyvinyl chloride. This method not only imparts all of the above properties to the material, but also allows it to be produced in different thicknesses. Foamed open-cell PVC can be safely used indoors, as it is vapor permeable.

Selection of glue

Plastic is a lightweight material, so there is a misconception that it will hold up to any composition. But for fixing PVC, especially in the bathroom, a product with increased strength and a number of special characteristics is required.

What kind of glue should be used for PVC panels:

  1. Firstly, it is moisture resistant. Regular glue will not withstand constant humidity. Only moisture-resistant glue will ensure long-term and reliable fixation of panels in the bathroom and similar rooms.
  2. The composition must withstand a wide range of temperatures and their frequent fluctuations.
  3. A high degree of adhesion is necessary for a strong bond.
  4. It would be good if the components included antibacterial additives. Due to increased humidity, a favorable environment for the growth of bacteria is formed. Good glue will prevent the spread of mold and mildew.
  5. UV resistance also plays a role.
  6. The glue should be easy to apply. It’s good when there is a special tip on the package.
  7. The transparency of the composition speaks in its favor.
  8. The faster it sets, the better. Ideally, after 10 minutes after attaching, the panel will be clearly fixed on the wall.
  9. The composition should not contain toxic substances; a good indicator is the absence of a pungent odor.

The quality of the selected adhesive directly affects the stability of the finishing material. The panels themselves can last up to 10, and sometimes up to 15 years. If the glue is chosen incorrectly, the shelf life of the finish will be significantly reduced.

Installation

It is necessary to begin installation by cleaning the walls from dust and remnants of old material. In addition, they need to be leveled and puttied. After this, the panels should be left to lie at room temperature for about ten hours. Then degrease the working surface of the panel. The next step is to apply a deep penetration primer to the walls. After the walls have completely dried, glue is applied to them pointwise, the distance between the drops should be about 25-30 cm.

It is better to take the glue that:

  • consists of synthetic resins;
  • not afraid of dampness;
  • dries quickly;
  • has a high ability to bond surfaces;
  • not afraid of sudden temperature fluctuations;
  • does not have a strong chemical smell.

When choosing a glue manufacturer, it is best to trust companies with a good reputation.

These include:

  • Kleiberit. It is distinguished by its versatility and optimal cost. Dries quickly and is moisture resistant. All components are environmentally friendly.
  • "Emphicol". It has a viscous structure, no color, and reliably adheres to surfaces.
  • "Moment Crystal". One can note its transparency and versatility, the ability to glue a plastic panel to any material.
  • MitreFix. Another glue that tolerates moisture well.
  • "Moment Installation Liquid Nails." Reduces sound transmission and reliably glues even poorly combined materials.

An alternative to glue can be liquid nails. When the glue dries, the panel is firmly applied to the wall, then detached and, after one minute, pressed again. To avoid uneven distribution of the glue, you should only cover one surface with it and wait 48 hours for the result to harden. The final touch of the procedure is to remove any remaining glue using a sponge or piece of cloth.

To install in this way you need to prepare:

  • drill;
  • must for fitting the panel;

  • dowel-nails;
  • a level that allows you to monitor the position of the panel;
  • hacksaw for wood or metal;
  • nails, furniture stapler, hammer, screwdriver.

The sheathing is made from wood blocks treated with an antiseptic. The distance from one bar to another should be no more than 50 cm. The panel is fastened with screws or fastening brackets.

To hide the cracks that appear during the installation process, it is recommended to use silicone sealant or overhead strips.

The process of installing mosaics in the bathroom

Wooden 3d panels

After selecting the type of panel with a pattern and the method of installation, it is necessary to carry out work in accordance with the standards and the following algorithm:

  1. Leveling the surface of walls and corners at 90 degrees. If it is brickwork or a monolith, they need to be plastered with cement mortar along the beacons and a finishing putty applied. Everything must correspond to the level, without holes and bumps, as well as damaged areas;
  2. Priming the wall with a liquid with deep penetration. It is done with a brush or roller in one or two layers, depending on the cleanliness of the surface;
  3. Next, the place where the PVC panel will be located is marked by setting the horizontal and vertical levels. Based on these points, a direct mark is drawn, along which the tile will then be laid;
  4. Laying PVC mosaic panels. Glue is applied to the wall part itself, most often these are liquid nails or plumbing sealant, which have a fine structure and do not shrink. You can also use a special mastic, which is sold in liquid form and is applied in a continuous layer with a ribbed spatula;
  5. The panel is applied to the desired location and pressed down with a rubber roller. You can glue it without it, but then there is a risk of missing sections and the formation of an air bubble, which will interfere and spoil the appearance. During installation, you need to keep the wall surface and tools dry, as water can negatively affect the adhesive mixture and disrupt adhesion;
  6. After placing the first row of panels, they must be fastened together with masking tape, which is glued along the joining seams to prevent the products from slipping. Then the subsequent panels are laid in a “ladder” order, so it will be easier to maintain the overlap of the joints and the horizontal level;
  7. After complete installation of all intact products, the panels located in the corners are trimmed. This action is carried out with scissors or a stationery knife along a metal ruler; the cut should be even and smooth so that no gaps form when gluing the next part;
  8. After all elements have completely dried, the surface is cleaned of squeezed out glue and other contaminants using a chemical solvent.

Thus, the mosaic type of PVC panels, if all points of the installation algorithm are followed, can last for many years, and doing the work yourself will allow you to save on the services of specialists. A wide range of models and an assortment of textures and patterns make it possible to create any interior and solve design problems. Sizes can be standard or customized, depending on the requirements of the owner of the premises.

Advantages and disadvantages

PVC panels with mosaics have numerous positive qualities.

The choice of this finishing material is due to the following advantages:

  • low cost;
  • a large assortment;
  • strength;
  • safety;
  • they are not susceptible to mold;
  • are not afraid of moisture;
  • They are easy to care for (just walk over the surface with a soapy cloth);
  • they can be sawed and bent without difficulty;
  • not affected by ultraviolet rays;

  • are not afraid of damage;
  • good thermal insulation;
  • resistance to sudden changes in temperature;
  • ease;
  • hide flaws in the walls;
  • excellent sound insulation;
  • they can be placed on any surface;
  • simple installation process;
  • they are easy to dismantle and replace.

How to install PVC panels

It all starts with preparing the walls; this is the basis for successful cladding. If the surface does not meet the proper requirements, then the plastic panels will not last long on them. Where to begin:

  1. The walls need to be cleaned of old finishing materials, leveled and puttied. The smoother the surface, the more beautiful and reliable the result will be.
  2. The next step is to coat the wall with a deep penetration primer.
  3. Now we leave the walls to dry. Although glue and PVC are not afraid of moisture, it is recommended to glue only on a dry surface.

Important! Before gluing PVC panels, there should be no dust or grease on the walls.

The panels also require a little preparation. All parts must be clean and free of grease. There is no need to start installation immediately after purchase. The material needs to sit for at least 12 hours at room temperature. This is called "acclimatization".

Varieties and characteristics

It is customary to distinguish the following types of plastic panels:

  • Panels of typesetting type. They are a narrow lining. The length of such material can reach up to 3 meters, width - up to 60 cm.
  • Mosaic panels. This coating consists of rectangular or square sheets with a relief mosaic pattern applied on top.
  • Tiles. In this case, the coating has the shape of rectangular or square slabs. The dimensions of the latter can range from 30x30 to 100x100 cm.

Initially, the production of such panels for interior decoration was quite expensive. And the panels themselves were too heavy, which made it impossible to use them for interior decoration. But with the advent of the free foaming method of polyvinyl chloride, it was possible to produce a lightweight and relatively affordable material.

The resulting panels have the following characteristics:

Fire resistance. The ignition temperature of the described panels is more than 500 degrees. Plastic does not absorb or allow moisture to pass through. Due to the use of sealants, liquid penetration is excluded even in the seams between sheets. The cellular structure of mosaic panels protects the room from extraneous sounds. This material is often used in public institutions, cafes and other places with high noise levels. PVC panels are not subject to mechanical damage, so there is no need to worry about scratches or cracks. Mosaic panels bend well. From them you can create structures of any complexity. Plus, if necessary, the panel can be easily sawed, drilled, milled or cut out a shaped contour

We recommend paying attention to the Leroy mosaic. Thanks to the use of polymer materials, such boards are not subject to rotting and have an unlimited service life. This coating does not contain hazardous chemical compounds and heavy metals, so it can be used in any residential premises.

Interior use

Mosaic has always stood out favorably compared to other finishes. In past centuries, mosaics were used to decorate interiors. When laying out mosaics, glass, ceramics, and stones were used. Making a mosaic beautifully is an art. This type of finishing has found its application in modern design.

Laying out a mosaic according to the rules is quite a time-consuming and financially expensive task. But modern manufacturers have found a way out. Mosaic layers began to be made from polyvinyl chloride. This reduced the cost of the material several times, making work easier. Accordingly, the demand for mosaics has increased. In addition, the material is moisture resistant, which has significantly expanded the scope of application of PVC panels.

Mosaic sheet panels have rightfully taken their rightful place among other finishing materials. They are durable, vapor-permeable, and are not afraid of moisture. The coating will not fade under the sun. They can be used in rooms with high humidity levels. The panels are used to decorate the walls of cafes and clubs. There are no restrictions on their use. They are environmentally friendly, meet sanitary standards, and do not contain impurities dangerous to human life.

Today, pearl decorative panels, as well as blue and turquoise, are quite popular. Mosaic panels will easily fit into any interior or create your own unique style. You get a luxurious texture at a minimum cost. Using the color of the mosaic you can influence the visual perception of space. Masters can even create color illusions that will make the design of the room unique and memorable.

Areas of application for mosaic panels

Polyurethane wall panels

Thanks to the variety of these products, a wide range of surfaces and reliefs, as well as colors, PVC panels can be used in any room. For example, a pearl mosaic PVC panel, embossed in the form of shells and marine fauna, is excellent for decorating walls in a bathroom or toilet; it will emphasize the individuality of the room, and the pattern will add color and visually expand the area.

Rectangular plates of a neutral color with a monotonous pattern are often used for finishing the backsplash in the kitchen, so the PVC mosaic panel of flowers, which depicts daisies or tulips, will look great against the backdrop of multi-colored cabinet facades, and if lighting is arranged above the detail, their texture will take on a completely new look paints. An example of such placement is shown in the figure.

PVC panels as an apron

Recently, the use of PVC mosaic panels when renovating a balcony has become popular. Since this room is not heated, a material is needed here that is not afraid of temperature changes, perfectly resists moisture and does not change its structure; these are the properties that plastic wall products have. Finishing the surface with this kind of detail is no different from work performed in warm rooms, the only condition is that the walls must be level and the ambient temperature is above zero so that the mounting adhesive has time to harden.

It is possible to use these panels for installation on the ceiling, but you must use quick-drying glue, otherwise the tiles will constantly slide down and the overall pattern will not work.

Often the panels are used in non-standard ways, for example, for gluing window sills made of plastic, granite or concrete. This type of finishing is decorative and does not carry any special functionality; it is designed to update the interior through the design and mask any defects on the surface.

Features of decorative mosaics made from PVC sheet panels

Due to the manufacturing features of PVC panels, they can imitate almost any texture and be painted in many shades and colors. Patterned tiles are often used for kitchen backsplashes.

How to stick it on the wall of a room

Installation of such a coating is also quite easy.

You can do this in two ways:

Using metal or wood sheathing. It acts as a base onto which the panel is directly attached using screws or staples. Plus, in the space formed between the wall and the covering, you can lay insulation or hide electrical wiring.

Installation of wall cladding

Mosaic PVC trim looks great on the walls. In addition, it hides defects and surface imperfections.

For installation, you can use two methods.

  • Fill a wooden sheathing or install a metal frame. Mosaic canvases are attached to the prepared surface using construction brackets or self-tapping screws. There is space between the sheathing and the wall. You can hide communications there or attach insulation.
  • Place on synthetic resin-based glue or liquid nails. The mosaic is glued onto a prepared base that is dry, degreased, and cleaned. The adhesive is applied to the entire area of the panel, pressed firmly against the wall, then left for 5 days until completely dry.

There will be visible cracks on the mounted surface. This is inevitable, since butt profiles for mosaics are not manufactured. You can solve the issue by using silicone sealant (white, colored), or by purchasing an overhead docking strip.

Product examples

There are several trusted manufacturers that produce special glue for plastic:

Moment crystal

  1. Universal adhesive for plastic Kleiberit on synthetic resins. Sold in tubes with a convenient nozzle. It has an affordable price, but it fixes PVC well, is not afraid of moisture and dries quickly. The composition is safe.
  2. Glue " Moment-crystal ". Also a universal adhesive, it can attach a plastic panel to almost any base. The advantage of the composition is that it is transparent.
  3. Another Moment glue is liquid nails (“ Installation ”). Lives up to its name. It will firmly connect even poorly compatible materials. There are samples for both interior and exterior work.
  4. " Emphikol " is a special composition for working with polyvinyl chloride. Colorless, viscous, forms a strong connection between the plastic and the surface.
  5. MitreFix is an alternative composition that is moisture resistant. Forms a strong seam.

MitreFix

The main thing in choosing an adhesive is the mark on the packaging that the composition is suitable for working with plastic. If you are not sure of the glue’s abilities, contact a specialist consultant and read the instructions. It is recommended to buy glue only in construction departments, so as not to receive a fake or low-quality product.

Manufacturers

Mosaic canvases belong to the average price range. On the Russian market of construction and finishing materials they are represented by domestic manufacturers. Foreign companies also produce such coatings, but their cost is quite high.

Among the manufacturers, two domestic companies stand out.

engaged in the production of PVC mosaic coverings. It was founded in 2003 and is currently the largest company in the industry. The company has established distribution channels and established relationships with hardware stores. Therefore, its range is widely represented in every city. The company does not stand still, but is constantly developing. Management invests a significant portion of capital in modernizing and improving equipment. A staff of process engineers is responsible for the development of new methods and technologies for manufacturing products, which significantly affects quality.

Mosaic panels in the interior

Polyvinyl chloride is a special type of thermoplastic plastic consisting of vinyl chloride polymer. This plastic is the raw material for many finishing materials and gives unlimited scope to the designer’s imagination. There is a huge range of PVC mosaic panels on sale. They can be used to cover the entire bathroom, or only some walls, in separate strips. In addition to the bathroom, such wall panels can be glued to:

  • bathroom, toilet;
  • shower cabin, SPA;
  • corridor, pantry;
  • kitchen in the workspace area;
  • country house, dacha.

The surface of the panels is stylized as a mosaic; it also has small square sections separated by seams. You can choose the cladding for your apartment depending on your individual preferences. Products with wood, stone, abstraction, geometry, and floral designs are sold. In stores you can even find gold, silver, pearl, and marble panels. Shades of coffee, turquoise, sea, crystal, malachite and others are especially popular.

Where is mosaic installed?

Based on the composition of the material and its design, the tiles are used on:

  • Constantly wet areas adjacent to plumbing equipment;
  • Vertical partitions from floor to ceiling;
  • Covering floors, shower walls, bathtub sides;
  • For decorating arches, niches, columns.

For example, a mosaic for a bathroom in Leroy Merlin is perfect for decorating semicircular walls and a shower tray. Even an inexperienced master can handle the job.

Types of mosaic panels

Sheet panels differ not only in appearance, but also in size. Here are the main types:

  1. Narrow typesetting. They have connecting locks, reminiscent of lining. The length is 2.10-3 m, the width varies from 25 to 50 cm.
  2. Sheets, or rectangular wall slabs. Their size is 485*960 mm, but there are other formats, including for individual order.
  3. Square. The side of such a mosaic is 30-100 cm.

The outer coating of this finishing material can be glossy or matte. Another difference between the products is their price. Domestic manufacturers produce economy-segment panels, but there are more expensive ones. Foreign companies present similar products at high prices. The best brands are:

  1. PlastDecor is the largest manufacturer of construction products made from foamed polyvinyl chloride, which produces mosaics using modern equipment. Products of this brand are available in most specialized stores.
  2. Decoplast is an equally well-known manufacturer that constantly produces the latest types of PVC products. All products have certificates and are of very high quality.

Panel properties

Plastic wall cladding is characterized by high performance characteristics and ease of use, which explains its popularity. The properties of polyvinyl chloride panels are unique:

  1. Water resistance. The surface of the sheets is smooth, there are almost no pores, so water does not seep inside. This eliminates the risk of fungus, mold, and darkening.
  2. Soundproofing properties. If you use the material for the bathroom or kitchen, the walls will transmit sounds much less.
  3. Fire safety. Compared to other finishing materials, plastic mosaics have a higher flammability threshold.
  4. Ease of installation. The panels are easy to saw, process, they can be drilled, cut, milled, bent, and even cut out a shaped contour. Even a beginner can stick mosaics on walls.
  5. Resistant to damage. The products are not easy to scratch or spoil, they are easy to clean from any stains and do not react to household chemicals, alkalis, or acids.

The service life of the panels is at least 15 years, and their decorative properties are amazing. Typically, products are painted with the most abrasion-resistant dyes, due to which they do not fade or fade. Plastic cladding imitates different types of expensive surfaces, while being accessible to everyone.

Installation and Installation

A decorative panel will help hide the imperfections of the walls; with its help it is possible to hide even significant flaws. Still, uneven walls, holes and bulges can cause material to peel off. Before gluing it, it is better to choose an adhesive suitable for the plastic and carefully prepare the walls. Installation of the material is carried out in two ways, they are described below.

Gluing order

Gluing mosaics to the wall is the simplest and most popular solution. The surface must be plastered, leveled, and primed. Large differences will lead to swelling of thin plastic, so all irregularities must be eliminated using putty.

The gluing procedure is as follows:

  • keep the material at room temperature for 12 hours or more;
  • drop any degreaser onto the plastic and wipe;
  • apply glue pointwise around the entire perimeter and in the center;
  • lean the sheet against the wall according to the markings;
  • press and hold for the required time (according to the instructions for the specific adhesive composition).

Liquid nails, polyurethane or silicone glue are suitable for installation. Since gaps inevitably appear between individual elements, silicone sealant is used to hide them. For the same purpose, you can use a special molding. It is possible to cut the mosaic using strong scissors or a construction knife.

Installation on the sheathing

If the wall is too uneven, it is not possible to put it in order; another method of installing the panels is allowed. To do this, you need to make a sheathing from wooden blocks, treating them with a fungicide against mold. The distance between individual bars is 50 cm; the sheathing is attached to the wall with nails and dowels. Then you can glue the mosaic in the same way.

In the free space between the sheathing and the wall, you can hide wires, lay insulation, etc. Caring for plastic panels is easy. They can be washed and wiped with a damp cloth without fear of spoiling them.

PVC mosaic

Mosaic masonry always looks impressive, but natural materials are quite expensive. You can also make a mosaic from PVC panels, and this is done easier than it seems at first glance. Installation is carried out both in the kitchen and in the bathroom. This is a worthy replacement for ceramics; PVC is also not afraid of moisture, is resistant to temperature changes and looks decent. Another important plus: mosaic decorates small irregularities and defects in the wall due to its plasticity.

  1. The panels can be installed directly on the wall.
  2. The surface must be clean.
  3. The sheets are cut with a construction knife.
  4. Each sheet is covered with glue.
  5. The part is pressed tightly against the wall until it fully adheres.
  6. Complete drying time is 2-3 days.
  7. When installing mosaic parts, joints will appear. They are treated with sealant.

Installation of PVC panels is a good solution for quick DIY renovation of premises. It is not enough to choose high-quality material; accompanying products can have a greater impact on the result. So, the stronger the glue, the longer the plastic panels will last.
