Grout for tiles Ceresit: instructions for choosing grout

Grouting is the final type of work when tiling surfaces with any type of tile. Over the years of professional activity, I have come across different means for filling joints, but lately I have been loving Ceresit tile grout; color scheme is not the only reason for preference. I want to share my observations and conclusions about this material so that the person choosing grout does it competently.

Kinds

The Ceresit package contains an abbreviation. Before purchasing, you need to read the decoding to choose:

Abbreviation nameComposition basis
CS 25Liquid silicone rubber
CE 33, CE 35, CE 40, CE 43Portland cement, mineral filler, plasticizer.
CE 79Epoxy resin, filler (two-component composition)
ST 10Aqueous silicone dispersion, antifungal additives

All presented types are intended for use under certain conditions, regardless of the shade of the material:

  • connection width is not more than permissible;
  • use from the street side is permissible;
  • waterproof properties;
  • interaction with tiles, tiles, brick and stone materials;
  • resistance to increased loads, vibrations, deformations;
  • increased flexibility.

Scope of application of Ceresit CE (Ceresit)

The solution is suitable for both external and internal work. These can be stone, glass, ceramic cladding on bases that are not subject to deformation - plaster, concrete, cement screeds.

In the photo - Ceresit grout se 33 t

Thanks to its smooth surface and water resistance, the grout can be used for small indoor pools, baths, bathrooms, showers and kitchens. The solution contains an antifungal additive created according to the MicroProtect formula, which eliminates the appearance of mold on the surface of the tile.

Advice: the mixture is not suitable for corner or expansion joints. For them, as well as places of contact with plumbing equipment, it is recommended to use silicone grout.

How to prepare the base

Before grouting the seams with Ceresit grout, you must first clean them of dirt, dust, glue and other materials that may negatively affect the adhesion of the grout to the ends of the tiles and the base. When laying the mixture, you need to ensure that the joint depth is the same along its entire length. Important - the thickness of the tile joint layer cannot be less than the thickness of the tile itself. The grout mixture can be laid only after the adhesive solution on which the tiles are laid has completely dried.

The difference between Ceresit CE33 and CE40 grout

CE33 is exclusively for dry rooms such as corridors or utility rooms, if there are tiles there. CE40 is a grout for wet areas - baths, kitchens, hallways and so on. There is also CE43 - for wet rooms. Don't confuse them with each other! The difference in price is very significant.

It is best, as a person who regularly does repairs, to buy grout for wet rooms, which is intended specifically for these cases, and for dry rooms, buy your own grout. But if you want, experiment. I heard that some smart people add liquid glass to the grout - it seems to work fine and no problems arise. Who knows, I didn't do that.

Domovy, liquid glass is a kind of plasticizer. It improves the properties of cement mixtures. And adding it to the grout - hmm, in theory, this can be done. Grouts contain cement.

That's what I mean!

What is important to consider when choosing

When choosing grout for Ceresit tiles, you need to consider the following points:

  • Purpose. Each room has its own microclimate and humidity. If the mixture is used in damp rooms, then a composition with antifungal components is required to prevent the spread of fungus and mold. It is necessary to consider how often the surface will be exposed to chemicals and cleaning. If the surface is subject to loads and vibrations, the grouting material must have increased elasticity, since a tight, dry joint will quickly crack.
  • Connection width. This indicator is written on the packaging. Be sure to take into account the maximum and minimum values when choosing. The manufacturer of ceresit recommends using materials with fillers that impart plasticity when sealing seams up to 3 mm. If the seam is up to 6 mm, then the composition should include sand. For seams up to 20mm, the composition must be of increased elasticity.
  • Feature of the tile. Ceresit grout is designed not only for filling the seams between tiles, but also for gluing its end part. Thus, for glossy and decorated tiles, a finely ground composition, polyurethane, is used. When grouting mosaic or glass tiles, an epoxy mixture is suitable. When working with ceramics, you should not use liquid compounds; they will cause difficulties and unnecessary material costs.
  • Hue. Affects the appearance of the entire cladding and the room as a whole. Even plain tiles can look original when treated with colored, decorative grout material.

It is convenient to use the selection table when choosing Ceresit grout:

To buy the right amount of mixture, you should take into account the consumption parameters of the Ceresite grouting material:

Range of performance characteristics of Ceresit fugues: all types

Grouts are sold in the form of dry mixtures or ready-made solutions. To improve the quality of seams, coloring pigments and special water-repellent substances are added to them.

The task of grouting is to give the tile masonry a completed look, and in addition, not to allow moisture to penetrate deep into the joints, which can destroy the glue.

The use of grout prevents the formation of fungus, this is especially true for “wet” rooms: bathroom, kitchen, swimming pool and bathhouse. And, of course, grouting makes cleaning much easier: dirt and dust do not accumulate in the seams.

All this will work if the composition of the mixture is chosen correctly. And this is not as simple as it seems at first glance. There are many types of mixtures and each of them is designed for special conditions of application and operation.

It is necessary to take into account not only the composition, but also the color of the grout, its behavior in an aggressive environment

It should be noted that Ceresit brand products have a wide range of choices, so it makes sense to study the most popular formulations and choose the one that suits you.

Ceresit CE 33 Super – 26 shades for the bathroom

This type of mixture is suitable for processing thin joints up to 6 mm wide. It is also chosen because these Ceresit grouts have a rich range of colors, ranging from white to black.

This grout has an innovative formula that prevents the growth of bacteria on the surface and deep in the cladding seams

After hardening, Ceresit CE 33 grout of any color from the palette gives a smooth and even surface that is not afraid of either water or sub-zero temperatures. Resistance to frost allows this model to be used for outdoor work, for example, when finishing the facade with ceramic tiles or imitation stone masonry.

In repair work, it is recommended to combine Ceresit CE 33 tile grout with a silicone analogue for additional treatment of joints in plumbing fixtures.

Using Ceresit grout in practice for the bathroom and other rooms

When using Ceresit grout, you must adhere to special rules:

  • Before grouting, be sure to make sure the tile adhesive has hardened.
  • The edges of the tiles must be wetted before cleaning.
  • Be sure to get rid of the old mixture.
  • You need to make sure that it does not leave streaks; to do this, use tiles without glaze.
  • When preparing the mixture, the water temperature should be at room temperature. Remember that you need to pour the mixture into water and nothing else.
  • Before using the mixture, let it sit for about 7 minutes, and most importantly use it within an hour.

How to thin grout

Ceresit dry grouts based on cement are mixed in the ratio: 1 part by weight of water (in kilograms) to 3 parts by weight of dry matter. The components are thoroughly mixed. Before starting work, you need to perform a test batch and check whether the color of the set mixture matches the required one.

The joints are filled using a rubber spatula, and after 15-20 minutes the excess is removed with a damp sponge. To improve setting conditions and prevent drying, it is recommended to moisten the treated seams with a damp sponge daily for 1 week .

Material consumption

It is easy to calculate the consumption of Ceresit grout. When calculating, it is necessary to take into account the type of surface being treated and its operating conditions.

For correct calculation, you can use the formula. The length of the surface to be treated must be added to its width, and the result divided by the product of these quantities. The resulting number must be multiplied by the thickness of the tile and the width of the seam. The result will be the value of the mixture consumption in units of kg/m.

You can also use the information provided by the manufacturer on the packaging, or use the average consumption:

  • CE 33 : from 0.4 to 0.5 kg/sq.m;
  • CE 35 : from 0.4 to 1.2 kg/sq.m;
  • CE 40 : from 0.2 to 0.5 kg/sq.m.;
  • CE 43 : from 0.9 to 1.5 kg/sq.m.;
  • CE 79 : from 1.0 to 1.3 kg/m2;
  • CS 25 : from 25 to 100 kg/sq.m.

Reviews

Durable grout for small joints. I used it for tiles in the bathroom, for the sixth year now the tiles are like new. Not a single crack or chip, the main thing is to mix and apply correctly.

  • Vladimir Kartashenkov, 42 years old: “I bought the grout along with the tiles on the advice of a master friend of mine. For the blue floor in the kitchen, I chose a dark blue mixture, because the light solution darkens unevenly over time. Among the advantages of Ceresit CE 33 I would like to note its easy dilution and low price. A small drawback is the packaging, which is quite fragile due to the thin paper.”
  • Ruslan Nurmagomedov, 33 years old: “I was doing renovations in the bathroom, and when the time came to choose a grout, I decided to trust the consultant in the store and settled on Ceresit CE 33. My intuition did not let me down: the mixture turned out to be easy to use, I was able to easily wash it off the surface. The mortar holds well in the seams; nothing has come off in a year. The only thing I didn’t like was the rather complicated breeding.”
  • Sergey Kuteynikov, 24 years old: “If you follow the operating instructions and mixing proportions, Ceresit CE 33 solution will be the ideal completion of the laid tiled cladding. All that remains is to choose a store and, if necessary, contact a grouting specialist.”

Recommendations

Work is recommended at base and ambient temperatures ranging from +5 to +30 degrees and relative humidity of about 55%. To prevent the color of the seams from changing, do not use detergents with intense colors when cleaning and subsequent care. It is important to protect the fresh seam (until it is completely dry) from exposure to water or rain, and to prevent a sharp drop in temperature. Remember that the color palette of grout in printing samples does not provide 100% gamut reproduction. You will be able to see the original color of the seam only after it has been applied and dried.

Colors may not correspond to actual colors due to the display characteristics and settings of monitors and video cards of various computer manufacturers.

Color palette

When purchasing Ceresit grout, the consumer first of all pays attention to the color scheme, which allows the material to be used in accordance with their taste preferences for decorating a tiled room. In addition, when choosing, the buyer is guided by the requirements of the project completed by a professional designer

Taking into account the wishes of consumers, the manufacturer offers up to 39 shades of grout, suitable for almost any color and pattern of cladding. Anticipating the most unusual tastes of its customers, the company continues to work on expanding the palette, therefore producing grout in such rare shades as “chili” or “jasmine”.

Instructions for use

Grouting work is carried out using previously cleaned joints. Excess glue, dirt, dust, and fat deposits must be removed from them. If the seam requires updating, then the old grout is removed by mechanical or chemical action (special solvent).

The package indicates the required amount of water to prepare the solution. Keeping the proportions, the mixture is mixed. In this case, the mass should be homogeneous, preventing the formation of lumps. After kneading, the mixture sits for five minutes, this time is necessary for the plasticizer to mature.

Apply the solution with a rubber spatula to the seam moistened with water. Excess is removed using diagonal movements. You can wipe with a damp washcloth after 15 minutes.

The washcloth must be moistened; excessive blurring will lead to the formation of a multi-colored seam.

The finished mixture is used within an hour, so you should not knead large portions.

What reviews say about Ceresit grout

It would be dishonest to keep silent about the fact that reviews of Ceresit grout are not always enthusiastic and satisfied. Before deciding to use it, read the opinions of practitioners. In most cases, complaints about the material are related to the mistakes of the masters themselves, usually beginners. Incorrect proportions or errors in the application order can all lead to the mixture crumbling and staining surfaces. This is why it is so important to follow the instructions on the package. In conclusion, we invite you to watch a useful video on applying grout. If you have any questions or are ready to share your own experience, write in the comments!

Hydrophobic impregnations for tiles and grout

Ceresit CT 10 Super is an impregnation that will reliably protect unglazed tiles and grout from the development of bacterial plaque and fungus. In addition, tiles treated with this impregnation do not get dirty from grease and dirt, and they do not absorb water.

The water repellent is based on silicone. This is a completely safe composition for humans. It can be used outdoors and indoors.

The composition is colorless and odorless, does not change the original color after processing

The impregnation consumption is very small - only about 1 glass per 1 m². Drying time – up to 6 hours depending on the ambient temperature. The water repellent is applied with a brush or spray to cleaned surfaces. On large surfaces, application by pouring is acceptable.

Pros and cons of grouting joints with Ceresit

If we consider Ceresit products from the point of view of advantages and disadvantages, we get the following picture:

Pros:

  • a large selection of colors, which allows you to choose grout for almost any coating;
  • a wide range of compositions for interior and exterior work with different operating modes of surfaces;
  • simple algorithm of operation, reliable results, even with the first application experience.

Minuses:

  • tiling experts warn that Ceresit mixtures change significantly in color after drying. This effect should be taken into account when selecting shades;
  • Some users complain that this mixture contains an unstable pigment that can remain on the rag during cleaning.
