How to choose gypsum plaster for interior work in terms of price/quality ratio?

Gypsum plaster is much easier to work with than cement plaster. But it should be borne in mind that the working solution hardens quite quickly, so it needs to be prepared in small portions.

In order for the leveling of walls and ceilings with gypsum plaster to be successful, you need to pay attention to several important selection criteria:

  1. Be sure to study the information about the drying time of the solution. It only takes 20-30 minutes for specialists to level a wall or ceiling. If you are not one of them, choose a mixture that has a hardening time of about 40 minutes.
  2. Find out which surfaces a particular plaster can be applied to. But there are also universal compositions that are suitable for concrete walls, wood, and brickwork.
  3. If the walls have not been leveled before and have many defects, you should give preference to plaster, which can be applied in several layers.
  4. You should also consider the method of applying the plaster, as there are mixtures for manual and machine use.

It is also necessary to take into account the room in which the finishing work will be carried out. For rooms with high humidity, such as the kitchen or bathroom, there are separate dry mixtures.

Advantages and disadvantages of various types of plasters

Type of plaster Advantages Flaws
Cement + low price

+ weather resistance

+ vapor permeability of the coating

- used only for leveling bases

- insufficient elasticity

Plaster + plasticity

+ quick drying

+ can be used for decorative purposes

+ thick layer

- afraid of atmospheric influences

- does not withstand mechanical stress

Synthetic + plasticity

+ versatility

+ high adhesion

+ decorative

- high price

- low vapor permeability

- gets dirty easily

The best gypsum plasters for interior work by price/quality for 2021

When carrying out large-scale finishing work, it is not always possible to buy expensive plaster. But many brands have inexpensive, but high-quality and easy-to-use mixtures that will help you quickly level the walls.

KNAUF Rotband

Expert rating:9.9 / 10
Owner review
One of the best plasters. It's a pleasure to work. Noticeably cheaper than any cement one, although almost no one knows about this. Comfortable setting time for work. If you need a little, definitely take Rotband. But when buying a large volume, I would choose something cheaper, in the end you are unlikely to notice the difference. Rotband is a household name in the world of gypsum plaster.

This plaster is based not only on gypsum, but also on special polymer components. It is they who make the prepared mixture plastic and elastic, and after hardening - durable.

In addition, polymer components provide increased adhesion, so even when applied in a thick layer, the plaster will not crack or peel. After drying, the plaster turns out perfectly smooth. This allows you to immediately begin applying the decorative topcoat, without intermediate puttying.

The manufacturer also made sure that the mixture consumption was low. Compared to cement plasters, finishing work will require 2 times less gypsum mixture. The thickness of one layer can be 50 mm, but in some cases application in several layers is allowed if the walls have serious defects and clearly visible irregularities.

Specifications:

  • package weight 30 kg;
  • maximum layer thickness 50 mm;
  • water consumption per 1 kg of dry mixture 0.6 l;
  • solution viability 25 minutes.

Pros:
cheap, but very high quality gypsum plaster;

can be applied in a thick layer;

does not require subsequent puttying;

fits well on all types of surfaces;

does not have a pungent odor.

Minuses

the solution hardens in 20 minutes, so you need to work quickly;

Many users have difficulty preparing a solution of the required consistency.

Excellent plaster. You can lay a thick layer, stated in one pass up to 50mm. Locally a layer of up to 100 mm is allowed. The first floor was plastered about 5 years ago - I noticed that the house began to retain heat better and the sound of the street was heard less (the facade was not yet tiled). The second floor was plastered this year - the result was similar. The people worked were different, and the first time they themselves set the condition that they would only work with this plaster.

Affordable gypsum plaster of classic gray color is intended for leveling walls and ceilings manually. The consistency of the plaster is not suitable for machine application.

It should also be borne in mind that the mixture is intended only for rooms with normal humidity, so it is not recommended to use it for finishing bathrooms or kitchens.

The balanced composition of the dry mixture allows it to be applied not only to porous concrete walls, but also to other surfaces. In this case, you should strictly follow the recommended amount of water per 1 kg of dry matter.

Otherwise, the working solution will be too liquid. Another feature of the plaster is that it remains viable for 45 minutes, so not only professional builders, but also beginners can work with it.

Specifications:

  • package weight 30 kg;
  • maximum layer thickness 50 mm;
  • water consumption per 1 kg of dry mixture 0.55 l;
  • solution viability 45 minutes.

pros

inexpensive plaster of classic color;

lays down in an even layer without much effort on the part of the user;

suitable for leveling any surfaces;

the working solution remains viable for a long time;

can be applied in a thick layer without the risk of cracking.

Minuses

some users think the price is too high;

cannot be used in damp areas.

Good plaster. Sticks to any surface. Quality, composition, texture, properties are the main advantages. In some places, after plastering, I discovered that the plaster was peeling off from the wall, but maybe this was just the crooked hands of the plasterers. Reasonable price for plaster. Masters recommend.

The affordable cost of this gypsum plaster should not be misleading. It has a balanced composition, and after dilution with water it turns into an elastic and plastic working solution.

It is easily applied to walls and does not spread when plastering the ceiling. But it should be borne in mind that the viability of the solution is only 10 minutes, so you will have to work quickly and prepare a small amount of solution at a time.

The plaster contains special additives that provide excellent adhesion. Due to this, the product can safely be called universal, because with its help you can level surfaces not only of concrete, but also of other materials. In total, 8-9 kg of mixture will be needed per square meter of area, but the final amount depends on the initial condition of the walls and the thickness of the applied layer of plaster.

Specifications:

  • package weight 30 kg;
  • maximum layer thickness 30 mm;
  • water consumption per 1 kg of dry mixture 0.65 l;
  • solution viability 10 minutes.

pros

inexpensive plaster with increased adhesion;

excellent plasticity allows you to level the surface with just one movement;

There is a wide selection of packaging by weight;

can be applied in one thick layer;

After drying, it forms a coating with a pleasant texture.

Minuses

very short pot life of the solution;

Counterfeits are common.

Tips for choosing

First, you need to decide what kind of effect you want to get - a smooth and silky surface or a textured one, reminiscent of concrete or the pattern of natural wood.

The next point is the features of the room. For example, for the kitchen it is worth choosing mixtures that, after drying, can be washed (with hoods, but the wall near the stove or sink will still have to be washed). If you are planning to decorate your bathroom, choose compositions that are resistant to high humidity, preferably with components that will help prevent the appearance of mold and mildew. For an office or premises with high traffic (shops, offices) you need a durable and easy-to-clean coating.

If you want to do the repairs yourself, choose plasters with a “fur coat” or “bark beetle” effect, as they are easier to work with. For example, not every master, let alone beginners, can cope with the application of Venetian plaster.

Consider the expense. Multiply the approximate consumption of the mixture (indicated on the package) by the number of square meters and round the result up. When tinting yourself, accurately measure the volume of the coloring composition (write it down and pour the same amount into a new jar of finished plaster) to subsequently avoid mismatches in shades.

The best machine-applied gypsum plasters for interior work

For large-scale finishing work, a machine method of applying plaster is usually used. For this purpose, special dry mixtures are used. Three compositions were recognized as the best gypsum plasters for interior work and machine application in 2022.

Weber Vetonit Profi Gypses

I would like to leave a review about machine applied plaster Weber Vetonit mech Gyps. I came across this myself and couldn’t find any reviews about it. That’s why I’m publishing gypsum in Pro, since it’s the same manufacturer. so here it is. Weber Vetonit plaster fur gypsum - OBJECT. it is less durable over time, has a poor gloss, but is more fibrous and stronger than MP 75. In general, in my opinion, it is better, but it is more difficult to work with - it requires skill, it dries faster.

Professional grade gypsum plaster is ideal for large-scale finishing work. It is intended for machine application, and the sufficiently long viability of the working solution allows repair work to be carried out for a long time.

Another advantage of the mixture is the fast drying period, even if the plaster was applied in a thick layer. The mixture itself is quite plastic, so applying it in an even layer is not difficult.

In addition, this consistency ensures that the plaster evenly fills all the unevenness of the walls, and the finished coating will be even and smooth. Thanks to this, plastered walls do not even need additional putty. Immediately after the plaster has dried, you can begin applying the final decorative coating.

Specifications:

  • package weight 30 kg;
  • maximum layer thickness 50 mm;
  • water consumption per 1 kg of dry mixture 0.55 l;
  • solution viability 40 minutes.

pros

relatively inexpensive professional-grade plaster;

suitable for application in a thick layer without the risk of cracking;

after drying, the coating is smooth and does not require putty;

good adhesion to any coating;

large volume of packaging.

Minuses

some users have difficulty applying evenly;

the bag is too heavy.

Very good plastic gypsum plaster for application to walls and ceilings in any layers. It is very comfortable to work, especially if you are not a professional. Large window for working with plaster after mixing: 2-3 hours. Rothband has about 20 minutes. Smooths out well and becomes smooth.

Using this machine-applied gypsum plaster, leveling walls or ceilings in a large apartment or house will not be difficult. The dry mixture is provided in large packages, and the long pot life of the solution allows you to carry out repair work for a long time without being distracted by re-mixing the solution.

In addition, machine application allows you to reduce the period of work by approximately 3-4 times. After drying, the plaster forms a perfectly flat and smooth surface that does not require additional putty.

The coating is also suitable for wallpapering and painting. If the walls in the room are uneven, you can safely apply the plaster in a thick layer without fear that it will become cracked over time. To mask serious defects and irregularities, the manufacturer recommends applying the plaster in several layers, waiting for each of them to dry completely.

Specifications:

  • package weight 30 kg;
  • maximum layer thickness 50 mm;
  • water consumption per 1 kg of dry mixture 0.65 l;
  • solution viability 120 minutes.

pros

inexpensive professional plaster for machine application;

long period of viability of the mixture;

the plastic working solution perfectly masks unevenness;

adheres well to any surface;

can be applied in a thick layer or in several layers.

Minuses

not suitable for manual application;

long period of complete drying when applied in a thick layer.

It stretches well and is light. Mixes without lumps. Very plastic, dries well, does not crack. You can rub it in and it will be almost smooth. The solution works for 1 hour. Doesn't float on the wall. It shrinks a little, but it's fixable. A good bag, does not tear or fall apart. Good plaster, the price is of course comparable to imported analogues. Convenient bag 30 kg. It dries quickly, after complete drying it is quite durable, not concrete of course, but it becomes difficult to pick. I recommend.

This machine applied plaster has many advantages that explain its popularity. Firstly, it is characterized by plasticity, which allows you to reduce the consumption of the mixture, but at the same time properly level the walls and ceiling.

Secondly, the finished coating acquires heat-saving properties and improves the microclimate in the room. The mixture also contains special components that prevent cracking and allow the plaster to adhere well to any surface.

Since the plaster is intended for machine application, it forms an even and perfectly smooth layer. Due to this, you can begin applying the decorative coating immediately after the plaster has dried, skipping the intermediate puttying step. Plaster also improves sound insulation, so it can be safely used in rooms with thin walls and partitions.

Specifications:

  • package weight 30 kg;
  • maximum layer thickness 50 mm;
  • water consumption per 1 kg of dry mixture 0.5 l;
  • solution viability 50 minutes.

pros

one of the cheapest but high-quality gypsum plasters on the market;

sufficient pot life of the solution;

improves the indoor microclimate;

has heat and sound insulation properties;

does not require additional putty.

Minuses

the color is not perfectly white;

It will not be possible to gloss due to the high sand content in the composition.

How to make it yourself

To create a textured surface, it is not necessary to buy expensive ready-made mixtures; putty or ordinary gypsum or cement-based plaster will do. Before starting work, a primer or special paint containing fine sand is applied to the leveled base (to improve adhesion).

After the soil has completely dried, the composition is applied in a layer of 5-8 mm, using a spatula to form the desired pattern. After the solution has set (for gypsum mixtures it takes 10-15 minutes), the surface is smoothed with the same spatula.

At the final stage - painting with any acrylic paint or treatment with a primer (glaze composition) to give the coating a tint and additional shine.

The best leveling gypsum plasters for interior work

If there are no serious defects on the walls, but they need to be leveled before applying the finishing coating, you should give preference to special leveling gypsum plasters.

The adhesion to walls is excellent, plus good ductility and low consumption. The time is optimal for work; you are not afraid that you will not have time and the mixture will rise, but you also do not wait long to move on to the next stage. Plastic, if you gloss it correctly and in time, then you won’t have to putty. Layers larger than 50mm take a long time to dry.

This plaster has pronounced leveling properties, so it is recommended to apply it to walls and ceilings instead of putty. It should be borne in mind that the plaster forms a perfectly smooth and even layer only when applied by machine.

At the same time, the shelf life of the solution is quite long, which provides additional ease of use of the mixture. Plaster is based on gypsum, which is supplemented with mineral and chemical additives.

They make the finished working solution plastic and suitable for application on surfaces with complex terrain. In addition, the mixture has good adhesion and can be applied to walls made of any materials. The plaster does not contain harmful or toxic impurities, so it does not have an unpleasant odor and is not harmful to health.

Specifications:

  • package weight 30 kg;
  • maximum layer thickness 30 mm;
  • water consumption per 1 kg of dry mixture 0.65 l;
  • solution viability 90 minutes.

pros

inexpensive professional-grade plaster;

can be applied in a thick layer without the risk of cracking;

improves sound insulation of the room;

when applied by machine, it forms a perfectly smooth surface;

It is soft and easy to apply, filling any unevenness.

Minuses

gray, not white;

cannot be applied by hand.

Moisture-resistant, with perlite, lightweight, plastic. Working with her is simply a pleasure! I was doing renovations in the bathroom, and in the end I got a perfectly white and even layer, this is after drying. A friend recommended it to me, and now I recommend it to everyone)) It is used very economically, this is also one of the main points, please note.

This plaster, in addition to the obvious leveling of walls, has other properties. In particular, it has thermal insulating properties, therefore it improves the microclimate in the room without impeding the penetration of air.

After hardening, the working mixture forms a crystal white and smooth layer that does not require rubbing or additional putty. Due to this, the time for finishing work is reduced.

The plaster mixture has excellent plasticity. Thanks to this, it is easily and evenly applied to any surface without sticking to the tool. It should be borne in mind that the viability period of the working solution is only 30 minutes, so non-professional builders need to prepare a small amount of the plaster mixture so that it does not have time to harden before application.

Specifications:

  • package weight 30 kg;
  • maximum layer thickness 50 mm;
  • water consumption per 1 kg of dry mixture 0.55 l;
  • solution viability 30 minutes.

pros

very high quality and plastic plaster;

suitable for application in a thick layer for high-quality leveling of walls;

snow White;

after hardening, the surface does not require additional leveling;

good resistance to moisture.

Minuses

in very damp rooms it may fall off over time;

does not mix well when preparing a working solution.

Great plaster, excellent adhesion, easy to use. The builders used it for the bathroom. They said it was the best. I don’t understand anything about this, but the masters who worked for me were professionals, so I trust their opinion completely and completely. Good product, I recommend buying, rating “5”.

If repair work is planned not only in dry, but also in wet rooms, you should give preference to this gypsum plaster. It contains special components that increase the resistance of the finished coating to moisture.

A good level of plasticity of the mixture ensures easy and convenient application, and the layer of plaster on the walls can reach 60 mm, and on the ceiling - 20 mm. This feature makes the mixture suitable for finishing work in rooms with uneven walls.

After hardening, the plaster acquires protective properties and reduces the negative effects of moisture on the walls and ceiling. In addition, the finished coating does not shrink or crack, even if the plaster layer reaches its maximum level. The cost of the dry mixture is also very affordable, so you can safely buy it for large-scale repair work.

Specifications:

  • package weight 25 kg;
  • maximum layer thickness 50 mm;
  • water consumption per 1 kg of dry mixture 0.22 l;
  • solution viability 50 minutes.

pros

suitable for wet areas;

easy to prepare working solution;

suitable for walls with serious defects, since the plaster can be applied in a thick layer;

sufficiently long pot life of the solution;

reasonable price, taking into account advanced performance characteristics.

Minuses

not always on sale;

On very uneven walls the consumption increases greatly.

MC-Bauchemie (PLITONIT)

Today's list opens with the German concern MC-Bauchemie , which was founded back in 1961. Since then, it has specialized in the production of construction chemicals and has more than 30 branches in 27 countries around the world. However, already in 2001, together with a Russian group, the concern created the Russian-German enterprise MC Bauchemi. The company is also one of the market leaders in the fields of construction (from construction to renovation) and finishing materials. True, since in this case we are interested in plaster, it is worth noting that it is presented on the domestic market under the brand PLITONIT .
Many consumers, among whom, naturally, there are experts, highly appreciate the versatility of using this manufacturer’s plaster, which is excellent for leveling not only internal but also external surfaces. It holds securely on the most common surfaces such as concrete, aerated concrete and brick, providing good adhesion.

Unis

Another Russian company that attracts the attention of consumers in search of high-quality plaster is Unis .
It has been presenting its products on the domestic market since 1994, which is a relatively short time. However, over a period of 24 years, it managed to earn a certain reputation and become one of the leaders among manufacturers of building mixtures, not only in Russia, but also in the CIS countries. The formulation of the company's products is developed in collaboration with foreign partners, leaders in the segment of production of specialized additives. Compliance with technical specifications and high international quality standards is ensured by a multi-level production process control system. The quality of the gypsum plaster from this manufacturer is at a good level, having an important advantage over analogues - its surface acquires a snow-white color upon drying. What attracts users most in this case is the economical consumption and affordable price of this product.

Knauf

In one of our previous articles where we looked at the most popular primer manufacturers present on the Russian market, there was a wonderful German brand Knauf .
And it so happened that he (like some others) managed to get on this list. This, however, is not too surprising, since building mixtures are a broad category, and if one company produces one of the types, there is a high probability that it also produces the rest. Naturally, it makes no sense to describe its history in detail once again, but it is worth recalling that the products of this brand have been on the Russian market for more than 25 years, which definitely indicates their high quality and sufficient popularity. The company provides very profitable options for finishing houses and apartments, since the porous structure and the presence of polystyrene foam granules provide the plaster with good thermal insulation properties. In this case, the composition is homogeneous and is extremely easy to apply to the substrate.

DAW SE (Caparol)

German brands have long been not uncommon in the production of products for repair and finishing work, and another representative of them on our list is the DAW SE (Deutsche Amphibolin-Werke) , which represents the Caparol .
The company's products include a large number of items in various categories. So, if you are planning to remodel your work or living space, then with a high degree of probability you will find everything you need from this manufacturer. The brand also wins its favor because it promotes a partnership policy, focusing primarily on the client, helping not only by providing high-quality products, but also possible solutions to certain problems. The plaster of this brand has a large number of advantages, including weather resistance, environmental friendliness, and high strength combined with good ductility. It is good for use in many areas. True, the only objective drawback may be its high cost.

Official website: caparol.ru

Saint-Gobain (Weber.vetonit)

Another large-scale group of companies offering high-quality solutions for repair and finishing work on the Russian market is Saint-Gobain (Saint-Gobain) , or more precisely, its brand Weber.vetonit .
The Group itself has been present on the domestic market only since 1992, which is not so long for its amazing history. We, of course, will not go into details, however, it is worth mentioning that the Saint-Gobain company was founded in France back in 1665 and was a royal manufactory engaged in the production of glass and mirrors. Today it is a fairly large concern, numbering over 1,000 enterprises in 67 countries, and the range of its products is not limited to construction materials alone, affecting other industrial sectors. As for the plaster produced by them, it also occupies quite high positions in user ratings, as it is universal, maintaining its properties both indoors and outdoors. In order for this plaster to harden properly in a dry room, it will need to be periodically moistened with water for the first 2 days.
