Cork wallpaper is not limited to only environmental properties. In addition to the naturalness of the material, such canvases have a number of other advantages:

stunning aesthetics, this is an excellent option for lovers of eco-style interiors;
low thermal conductivity - cork perfectly accumulates heat without blocking cold from the outside;
good sound insulation - the porosity of the material perfectly absorbs and dissipates sound waves;

regulation of humidity levels – cork naturally regulates humidity, maintaining it at an optimal level for the human body;
antistatic – the cork is electrically neutral, so it does not attract dust, always remaining clean;
fire safety - despite its “wood” origin, cork is completely non-flammable;

durability - due to its porous structure, cork wallpaper is resistant to mechanical stress. In addition, they do not fade or lose color, even under intense sunlight;
safety for the human body - cork has antibacterial properties, is hypoallergenic, prevents the appearance and development of mold and mildew, even in conditions of high humidity;

But besides the advantages, some disadvantages of cork wallpaper should also be pointed out:

price - the high cost of such paintings is perhaps their most important drawback. High-quality Portuguese cork has the highest price;
absorption of odors – the porous structure immediately absorbs and retains odors for a long time. Therefore, in rooms where persistent odors may appear, cork wallpaper should be coated with wax or varnish;

Difficulties with replacement - gluing other canvases over cork wallpaper will not work. They will have to be completely removed, which will be very difficult;
such wallpaper cannot be repainted;
pets – cork wallpaper and beloved pets – are incompatible concepts: the temptation to chew on a cork or sharpen your claws is very strong. Therefore, you will either have to abandon the cork or place such a covering outside the access area of animals.

This is a neat square tile. The installation principle is the same - it is attached to an adhesive base. After drying, it can form a single monolithic structure. But designers often use the tiled effect in their design.

Before you start gluing, you need to unroll the wallpaper and let it sit in the room for some time. It would be good to immediately cut them into strips and leave them under pressure for several days. Although the structure of cork sheets is quite heterogeneous, they do not hide wall defects well, so its surface must be smooth.

Cork wallpaper is “heavy” in its structure and density, and therefore requires high-quality reliable glue, for example, acrylic.

Basic recommendations for covering walls with cork wallpaper

It is better to start pasting the room from the corner. In general, processing the corner in this case is not an easy task. If the cork sheet is bent sharply or inaccurately, it may crack;
It is necessary to glue cork wallpaper exclusively at the joint;
gluing wallpaper with acrylic glue requires efficiency, so it is better to handle large pieces of cork with two people.

The process of gluing cork wallpaper involves the following steps:

Apply acrylic glue to a section of the wall that is the same size as the piece of wallpaper to be glued. Spread the glue evenly with a comb.
Place a piece of wallpaper on the surface so that there is no air inside and press down.
Remove excess glue with a knife. Do not try to wash off the glue with water, as this will cause a white coating to form on the wallpaper. So let the excess dry and then carefully scrape or cut it off.

What is liquid plug

Liquid, also known as sprayed cork, is a universal finishing material consisting of cork wood chips, fraction 0.5-1.0 mm, a polymer binder with modifying additives and water. In fact, it is a good example of using production waste, since the main component is obtained in the process of manufacturing various cork products. The Spaniards figured out how to turn waste into income; the first liquid traffic jam appeared in this country at the beginning of the 2000s. Domestic manufacturers offered an alternative to imports around 2011.

The material is a homogeneous mass, which, after hardening, forms a moisture-resistant, vapor-permeable, elastic coating on the surface, visually reminiscent of pebble plaster.

Due to the common base component - cork chips, products of various brands have similar basic characteristics:

highly decorative – interesting texture, visually reminiscent of a cement “coat”, wide range of colors;
high adhesion to various substrates - concrete, brick, wood, metal, gypsum plasterboard, DSP, GSP, OSB, chipboard, PVC, PPS, ceramic tiles, glass, cement and gypsum plaster, etc.
high elasticity – withstands movements of the base without cracking (tension and elongation of about 33%);
vapor permeability - due to the porous structure of the cork itself and the ability of the polymer binder to allow air to pass through (up to 75%);
moisture resistance - allows steam to pass through without conducting water into the inner layers of the base.

In addition, all manufacturers position their coating as a heat-insulating and sound-proof material. Yes, cork has similar properties, but it all depends on the thickness of the layer. On average, it is recommended to spray 4 mm onto the facade in several approaches; in terms of thermal conductivity they will be equal to 4 mm PPS. Naturally, there is no need to talk about complete insulation in such a situation. However, thanks to the impenetrable cork covering without cold bridges, the room will definitely become more comfortable.

As for sound insulation, again, it all depends on the layer to have a real effect, the basic 4 mm is clearly not enough, and applying more is impractical. Sprayed cork plaster is a real alternative to curtain-mounted ventilated facades and wet facades, but if it is necessary to increase heat-saving parameters, then it must be applied on top of thermal insulation materials.

That is, it is a finishing protective and decorative coating, but it cannot completely replace insulation, like a sound insulator.

As for durability, the test of time has not yet passed, due to the “youth” of the technology as such and the relatively short period of use in our climatic conditions. But based on indirect factors, it can be assumed that the 10-15 years of service claimed by manufacturers are quite realistic.

Liquid cork is based on acrylic and cork oak chips. Acrylic has been around for a long time in our area; primers and water-based emulsions are made from it, added to adhesives, etc. And the greater the proportion of acrylic in the composition of these products, the higher their quality. Acrylic has a shelf life of about 10-15 years, and the cork is also quite durable, especially when coated with this same acrylic. Everything else is modifiers that improve the original properties. So here you need to dance from acrylic. As for practice - pieces of coated SIP lay on the street in the rain, sun, snow for 2.5 years - of course, they got dirty, they were lying on the ground, but no significant changes were visible.

Choosing the right adhesive for installing cork panels

When starting work, the glue should be at the same temperature as the walls and panels, hence the recommendation to acclimatize all materials for 24-48 hours before installation. It is better to purchase special cork glue, which is made from organic or inorganic solvents (the first option is preferable from an environmental point of view). It is not recommended to use types of glue such as PVA and liquid nails (PVA is absorbed inside, and liquid nails do not have a natural composition).

Disadvantages of cork panels - are they comparable to the advantages?

Strictly speaking, the only minus is the cost. Considering that the material is natural, usually grows in Portugal and is collected by hand, it cannot be cheap.
