  • Having decided to start a renovation, you will have to choose the color palette of the room, choose the method of finishing the walls, ceiling and floor, find the optimal combination of practicality, aesthetics and, of course, price. If you explore the possibilities of modern finishing, you can save the lion's share of the family budget, since everyone knows how unplanned alterations can lead to huge, irrational waste.

    Choosing a ceiling design option

    Any cosmetic renovation begins with the ceiling; the interior of the room as a whole largely depends on its completeness, design and construction. Today there are a huge variety of ceiling finishing options. They are selected based on the preferences of the owners, the purpose of the premises and, of course, cost. When the issue of saving is acute, classic budget finishing options are chosen - painting and whitewashing, wallpapering or polystyrene foam boards. Suspended ceilings are relatively inexpensive, but also more practical and aesthetically pleasing. And, of course, when the question of the cost of repairs is not so pressing, the choice may fall on elite stretch ceilings.

    We will try to describe each type of finish in detail to help you choose the best option.

    Whitewashing or dyeing

    This method is inexpensive, but it is very labor-intensive and dirty. The slabs on the ceiling must have perfect joints, and the surface itself must be perfectly leveled beforehand. If you whitewash the ceiling, you will have to wash out a lot of whitewash from everywhere. And if you take chalk mortar or ceiling paint to open the ceiling surface, you will hardly be able to get a smooth surface with it, because there will be unevenly painted areas of the ceiling or, at a minimum, stains.

    But given the budgetary cost of finishing, in any case, if the work is done efficiently, then such a ceiling will look much better than “cracked” walls.

    Choosing a ceiling design depending on the room

    Now you know the features of each type of finish and can make a choice.

    But remember that the choice of ceiling finishing material greatly depends on the location. You cannot wallpaper the ceiling in the bathroom and hope that in a month the appearance of the ceiling will remain in its original form. Most likely, your wallpaper will come off in streaks, if not come off at all.

    In the living room

    The ceiling in the living room must be smooth, aesthetically pleasing, and consistent with the overall interior of the room. Almost any of the above options will work.

    If you want something modern and expensive, stretch ceilings. A small space in the room that needs to be expanded - a mirrored suspended ceiling. Limited budget for repairs - false ceiling made of plaster. And the most budget option is wallpapering, provided that you have an absolutely flat ceiling surface.

    Perhaps, a suspended cassette ceiling or finishing with plastic panels would not be a very suitable option for the living room. They are more suitable for administrative premises, offices or medical facilities, but are unlikely to give your living room more style and comfort. Although, of course, this is a matter of preference.

    In the bedroom

    Choosing a ceiling for a bedroom is not much different from choosing a ceiling for a living room. The main requirement is that it should not draw too much attention to itself and be conducive to relaxation.

    A mirrored ceiling would not be the best option for a bedroom. He focuses too much attention on himself and does not allow you to relax, especially considering that in the bedroom, while lying down, your gaze will constantly rest on him. For this reason, you should not install a metal slatted ceiling there. If you want to visually expand and deepen the space, it is best to use the glossy surface of a stretch ceiling.

    Drywall, MDF panels, textured ceiling tiles, and suspended ceilings look very good in the bedroom.

    For a children's room, you can completely surrender to flights of fancy and bold decisions such as colorful illustrations, cartoon sky, stars, etc.

    In the kitchen

    The kitchen is a place with constant fumes, temperature changes and special hygiene requirements, so the kitchen ceiling must be moisture-resistant, fireproof, environmentally friendly and easy to clean. Whitewashing and painting the ceiling in the kitchen, as well as wallpapering, are a thing of the past, due to their fragility. Stains and stains quickly appear on such ceilings, they crumble, peel off, and due to the large accumulation of steam, they become an excellent breeding ground for fungi.

    If there is a question of price, then it is better to use laminated polystyrene tiles or relatively inexpensive PVC panels.

    For large uneven areas, the best solutions would be gypsum, suspended or stretch ceilings.

    In the bathroom

    The requirements for the bathroom are the same as for the kitchen. Due to the large amount of fumes, the risk of accumulation of fungi and pathogenic bacteria, and the need for regular cleaning of surfaces, plasterboard ceilings, ceilings covered with wallpaper or trimmed with chipboard and fiberboard panels without special impregnation are completely unsuitable for the bathroom.

    Few people can boast of a large bathroom area, so the ideal option would be suspended slatted and mirrored ceilings, which will expand the space and add more light and shine.

    Plus, they are quite easy to care for; they are perfectly cleaned from stains and plaque.

    A more expensive alternative is a suspended ceiling, which is also ideal for the bathroom.

    In the table you can see the final recommendations for each room.

    Plastic panels

    When designing ceilings, you can also choose PVC panels for finishing. They will serve you for quite a long time, they have a high degree of strength, excellent sound insulation, excellent resistance to high levels of humidity, as well as elevated temperatures, which is why they are used together with LED or halogen spotlights. PVC panels perfectly hide unevenness in the ceiling, as well as wiring and pipes, so that they are not visible to the eye. PVC panels can be called a cheaper analogue of suspended and false ceilings. Choosing a ceiling for the house

    For Khrushchev

    The low height of ceilings in Khrushchev, unfortunately, is not a myth, but a harsh reality. Their maximum height is 2.40 m or even less if the apartment has had the floor replaced and screeded. Naturally, in such conditions it is quite difficult to install a suspended or suspended ceiling, which will steal from the already small height of 5-10 cm. But it is still possible if the actual surface of the ceiling does not have too large transitions, and the ceiling can be installed with minimal loss of space .

    It is recommended to install ceilings with a mirror or glossy surface in Khrushchev-era apartments to visually expand and deepen the space. Correct placement of lamps will also give a similar effect.

    For a modern new building

    Unlike Khrushchev, choosing a ceiling for a new building is much simpler. Here the ceiling heights are higher and the quality is newer, so you can choose almost any type of finish. It should only be taken into account that within 2-3 years, the new building will shrink a little, which may affect the geometry of the premises. Therefore, finishing materials, especially for the ceiling, should be installed with some reserve. All types of suspension and tension systems are ideal for new buildings.

    For a private home

    In a private house, the issue of thermal insulation is acute, so the ceiling material must retain heat well in the house. Since the external covering of the ceiling must also take into account a layer of insulation (made of expanded clay, mineral wool or polystyrene foam), it is best to use frame structures - suspended and suspended ceilings.

    For suspended ceilings, first a frame is assembled to attach the external ceiling (cassettes, plasterboard, etc.), and then a layer of insulation is laid in the space between the profiles. For suspended ceilings, on the contrary, they first create a frame from bars for insulation, lay it, and only then stretch the outer fabric.

    Venetian plaster - a fashionable solution

    If the ceilings in the room are so low that it is a pity to lose even a few centimeters on a tension structure, then you can use Venetian plaster with wax. When applied, it produces a beautiful gloss and creates a feeling of depth.

    Fashionable and beautiful design solution

    What to do if you have doubts when choosing a shade? To do this, different colors should be applied to the drywall fragments and applied. This technique will help you choose a color, since all shades are perceived as darker when placed upside down.

    Lighting options

    The choice of lighting source and the correct placement of light determines what kind of room you end up with - small and dark, large but cold, or warm and cozy.

    Chandeliers and lamps

    The classic lighting option is a chandelier in the center of the ceiling. It gives a lot of warm light, fits perfectly into almost any type of interior, and gives the room an elegant coziness.

    Remember the weight of the lamp! It is not safe to mount a heavy chandelier on light plasterboard; it is better to mount it to the concrete base of the ceiling.

    Unfortunately, this type of lighting is not very suitable for modern suspended and suspended ceilings, so it is gradually being replaced by built-in lighting.

    Spotlights

    • They allow you to create the necessary lighting around the perimeter of the entire ceiling and make a certain pattern out of it, if this is provided by the designer;
    • Easy to install lamps and replace light bulbs;
    • Safety. Spotlights do not heat the ceiling;
    • Rotating models allow you to change the direction of lighting as needed;
    • This is a relatively inexpensive method of lighting.

    LED strips

    A very non-standard and non-trivial approach to lighting rooms is LED strips. You can not only choose an unusual lighting color, but even create a real light show at home, thanks to dynamic lighting effects - smoothly changing colors, light music, waves, etc.

    Wallpaper - quality above all

    For those who strive for environmental friendliness and simplicity of decor, we can recommend design methods that have been used for years. Have ordinary plastering and painting lost their relevance? In today's hyperactive world, sometimes there is a desire to take a break, take a time out from the frantic race and return to the roots - simple decor, natural shades and natural materials.

    Our favorite wallpapers

    Wallpaper is most often used for a dacha or a house outside the city, but it can also be used within an ordinary apartment. Simple trends in interior design with wallpaper are interesting: shabby chic, country, Provence, Scandinavian. They are not demanding, they respect naturalness in materials and shades.

    Simply gorgeous and everyone's envy

    What are the conditions for wallpapering? Smooth surface. In addition to the direct method of applying wallpaper to plaster, they can be used on top of drywall.

    For design, you should choose high-quality wallpaper in current colors.

    Modern trends in ceiling design

    What do ceiling designers recommend today?

    1. Light neutral tones make the room appear larger, brighter, and taller. If you decide to use patterns or bright colors, accent them in one small place so that the room does not become tacky.
    2. Multi-level ceilings allow you to perfectly divide space into zones. For example, a protruding section of the ceiling will perfectly focus attention on the bed in the bedroom.
    3. Glossy, mirror and lacquered surfaces diffuse light, creating the effect of 3-dimensional space.
    4. For a low room, a plain light plasterboard ceiling with LED strips located along the edges is ideal. This illusion will visually raise the ceiling.
    5. The ceiling, covered with wood or wood paneling, together with light-colored furniture, gives the interior naturalness, richness and comfort.
    6. The glossy finish on the bathroom walls goes well with the matte ceiling.

    Selection of finishing materials

    There are a lot of materials for finishing the ceiling. Each finish is designed to suit different styles. It has its advantages and disadvantages. Used in different rooms. There are three groups of building materials :

    1. budgetary;
    2. universal;
    3. elite.

    Public include:

    • chalk solution;
    • painting;
    • wallpaper;
    • ceiling slabs.

    Universal include:

    • decorative plaster;
    • tension and suspended levels;
    • tree;
    • traffic jam

    Premium types include:

    • mirror bases;
    • Venetian plaster;
    • sgraffito.

    How to prepare the surface before repair?

    The tension structure is the simplest. Since there is practically nothing to do with the surface. However, if the level is equipped with ceiling skirting boards, then they should be removed to maintain height. Polyurethane foam tiles are not removed. It serves as additional sound insulation.

    Attention

    If the surface of the base is covered with time-worn plaster, then it would be a good idea to remove it before repairing. Falling fragments onto the film can damage it from the inside.

    Preparing for painting is a little more difficult. Before staining you must :

    1. remove plaster;
    2. remove old paint;
    3. prime the surface;
    4. make plaster;
    5. putty;
    6. paint.

    In new buildings the situation is much better. There the levels are initially even. They have deviations of no more than 5 mm per 2 meters of area. There is no need to plaster such a surface. Here you can go two ways:

    1. Apply a coat of paint over the existing one . The downside is that the old paint will appear in layers on top of the new one.
    2. Apply deep impregnation primer . Putty with dry mortar and water-based paint. After drying, apply secondary plaster and paint in 1-2 layers.

    Oil paint can be removed in 2 ways:

    1. Heat the old paint with a hair dryer . Afterwards, carefully peel it off with a spatula.
    2. Prime with concrete contact . Then do the plastering. The method is simple, but unreliable.

    There is no preparation for ceiling wallpaper. Puttying is done in the same way as for painting. It is not necessary to focus on quality. Small irregularities will be hidden by wallpaper.

    Important

    Polyurethane foam tiles lie only on a flat base. Therefore, it is necessary to thoroughly putty the surface before laying.
