Decorating walls in a nursery: Useful recommendations and unusual ideas

How to quickly decorate a wall in a children's room? We will introduce you to the most affordable methods of wall decoration, and also tell you how to properly decorate the space in a nursery with bright and colorful wood.

Loving parents always try to decorate their child’s room as beautifully and functionally as possible. In order for their beloved child to feel comfortable in it, they spare no effort or money.

And since usually in a nursery a child not only sleeps, but also plays, learns lessons and communicates with peers, the design of this room should be thought out in such a way that it has a clear zoning of a place for relaxation and a place for play. It is also very important that the color scheme for the nursery is chosen correctly.

No child will like a room whose walls are covered with inconspicuous wallpaper without any decorative elements. Therefore, remember what your son or daughter likes most and, in accordance with their preferences, create a fun and colorful space in the room.

Wall color in a boy's nursery

Boy's bedroom in green
For some reason, we generally believe that the best option for a boy's room is blue and light blue shades. In principle, such a color scheme has every right to exist. This is true in one case, if you are decorating the space, for example, in a marine style. In all other cases, it is best to use blue and cyan as an interesting addition to a complex color composition.

It is also absolutely forbidden to have a rich red color in a little man’s room. This shade has a fairly strong stimulating effect on the child’s psyche, and since by nature boys are already terrible fidgets, this can lead to excessive activity of the owner of the room.

Optimal colors for a boy’s nursery:

  • Green. This color will help your baby relax as well as possible and contribute to better quality rest. It is best combined with muted yellow, white, mint shades
  • White. It is considered the most universal color as it goes perfectly with any, even the brightest shades. But since the white color itself is not particularly rich and bright, it will be better if you try to complement it with beige or chocolate colors
  • Dark brown. It will help create the most comfortable and cozy environment in the nursery. These wall shades are best diluted with light gray, bottle green, grass, khaki

Choosing a style for the nursery

The style in which the image is made is also important, because it is what completes the composition of the entire interior.

Modern

Modern options can be either saturated with bright colors or in calmer tones. But such variations are not limited by their motives. This could be fantastic images of unicorns or fairies, or a drawing of your favorite cartoon character, or a beautiful landscape. Choose according to the theme of the room and you definitely won’t go wrong. Or stop your search at images of cartoon animals on a white background - it looks very cute.

Images of butterflies, fairies, and princesses will look ideal.

Modern

Art Nouveau style is characterized by the fact that the design does not have sharp corners or straight lines. They have arched or circular strokes that add elegance. The colors used are light green, purple, lilac, as well as paler colors of blue or yellow. This style often depicts flowers or plants, as well as landscapes. Due to the absence of sharp straight lines, the illustration becomes like a fairy tale.

A melancholy and quiet child will be boosted by bright paintings with dynamic images.

Other

Minimalism is one of the increasingly popular styles. Such options do not have a large number of drawings on the canvas. Usually this is one drawing made using a minimum number of lines and colors. Such images make the room brighter and more spacious.

The paintings look great above a child’s bed or in the play area.

Children's loft - in this style they are made in warm colors: brown, beige and white. For older children, you can also add black, blue and red colors. Canvases in the form of posters are more suitable here. They will diversify the room and give it originality.

Several small paintings framed will look beautiful.

Wallpaper and photo wallpaper for walls in a boy's nursery

Photo wallpaper in the room of a lover of stories about pirates

  • Correctly selected wallpaper looks equally good in any interior design. But for a boy’s room they must be chosen especially carefully. Under no circumstances opt for gloomy, almost black wallpaper. Although such finishing is considered to be the worst brand on the child’s psyche, it will have a negative impact
  • If you want your beloved son to consider his room the best place on earth, then choose wallpaper for the nursery with any kind of small pattern. Also consider whether the interior will be complemented by bright decorative elements, soft toys and children's posters
  • If you plan to place everything described above in your baby’s bedroom, then cover the walls with calm, plain wallpaper. If we talk about photo wallpapers, they should combine as well as possible with the overall color scheme of the children's bedroom, but at the same time not get lost against the background of the walls. They can depict your favorite fairy-tale characters, sports stories and search expeditions.

Sticker options for boys

When choosing stickers, adults often take into account only their tastes and preferences. In fact, it is important to take into account the interests of the child, taking into account his age and gender. If children are at an age when they can choose stickers themselves or express their wishes in the matter of decorating a room, the task of adults is easier. But it’s still worth listening to psychologists’ recommendations on choosing pictures for boys and girls.

What pictures are suitable for a boy’s room:

  • characters from your favorite cartoons - each child has their own, some like Spider-Man, and some like Smeshariki;
  • images of animals, fish, insects - they can be made in both a realistic and fabulous manner;
  • older boys may like sports themes - images of athletes in action, racing cars, etc.;
  • transformers, cars, planes and helicopters, spaceships - boys love technical topics;
  • other suitable topics are dinosaurs, ships and travel, pirates, space and stars.

Artistic painting in cartoon style

  • The children's room should look like a bright and cozy corner compared to the rest of the apartment. Therefore, if you really want to delight your child, then try to artistically paint the walls in the nursery. If you decide to do this experiment, then choose an interesting plot from your son’s favorite fairy tale or follow from the walls a mysterious distant island where unprecedented animals live
  • But no matter what drawing you choose, always remember that it should be as cheerful, positive, bright as possible and, of course, your child will like it very much. If you do not have special drawing skills, you can always try to apply a three-dimensional drawing using ready-made stencils
  • Any boy will love a picture on the wall that depicts his favorite football player, a spaceship, a fairy tree or funny robots of different sizes

Posters

A great mobile option for changing the look of a teenager's room. Typically, posters reflect the child’s interests and hobbies, so you should trust him to independently select suitable images. The most important thing is that the pictures can be replaced when new interests arise.

Wall color in a girl's nursery

Girl's bedroom in white and pink
Always remember that your princess's room is a small fairy-tale world. She should feel comfortable, cozy and protected in it. Therefore, it is very important that the design of the nursery is very gentle, warm and filled with details that girls like.

If you want your daughter’s room to meet all these criteria, then be especially careful when choosing the color scheme of the walls.

Optimal colors for a girl’s nursery:

  • Pink. Almost all girls like this color. It exudes femininity, romance and lightness. But keep in mind that the older your daughter is, the more muted the pink color scheme should be.
  • Violet . Since this color itself is very bright, it will be better if you combine it with shades that are very close to it in the color palette. It can be lilac, pink, red-eggplant, fuchsia
  • Orange. It will help make the room as warm and cozy as possible. And in combination with brown, yellow, peach and sand, this color begins to cast even more interesting shades and undertones

Color palette

Color is of great importance, influencing the unformed psyche of a child. Excessive brightness is not desirable. It is better to give preference:

  • Beige;
  • Blue;
  • Cream;
  • Olive;
  • Green tint.

Red color provokes activity, yellow promotes concentration, orange evokes positive feelings, pink is a symbol of friendliness and calm.

Pastel colors are an ideal choice, which makes it easier to choose decorating attributes.

Photo wallpaper in Disney style

  • When choosing wallpaper to decorate your daughter’s room, first of all think about her preferences and age. If your baby is still very small, then buy calm, plain wallpaper in peach, soft pink or cream colors
  • Funny posters, fresh flowers and toys will help you make such a fairly restrained interior more colorful. If your daughter already goes to school, you can try to decorate the walls more catchily. The wallpaper may contain delicate floral patterns, bright natural motifs or scientific themes.
  • But colorful photo wallpapers look best in a girly interior. Very often they help create the right atmosphere and become the main highlight of the interior design.

Depending on the age, the wall can be covered with the following photo wallpapers::

  1. Fairytale house in the clouds
  2. Funny bugs
  3. Beautiful forest glade
  4. Disney princesses
  5. Fairy with butterflies
  6. Mysterious princess castle
  7. Colorful wild flowers

Photo wallpaper

Another way to quickly change the look of a room. Images can be different; landscapes, still lifes or city panoramas are most often used. However, the photo wallpaper insert should not be very large: no more than 1/3 of the total wall area. A child can quickly get bored of looking at the same picture.

Art painting of walls in a children's room for a girl: stencils

Art painting for a girl
If you dream that your daughter will live in the most comfortable space, then try to make the interior design of her room extremely original. You can use technology such as artistic wall painting for this.

This decor can be done by hand (this requires fairly good drawing skills) or an original design can be applied using special stencils. In any specialized store you can find large-format stencils, with the help of which you can create not just single drawings, but rather voluminous and interesting compositions.

The girls' room will look good:

  1. Clouds of different sizes
  2. Smiling sun
  3. colorful rainbow
  4. Dandelions on a green meadow
  5. Stars
  6. Raindrops
  7. Multi-colored snowflakes

Ideas for lovers

It’s great if you have some drawing skills, then you can draw with your own hands not only cute characters and animals, but also a whole plot, for example, as in this photo selection of interiors with painted walls.

It is especially worth highlighting the theme of trees, which is fertile for creativity - they are not difficult to draw, but you can come up with so many interesting details! For example, these could be birds or fairies sitting on branches, beautiful leaves or flowers, squirrels or butterflies.

Painting walls in a nursery: options

Painting walls in a nursery: ombre
Lately, more and more parents are giving preference to painting walls. After all, if recently such finishing was considered unfashionable, modern technologies have made it possible to make it the ideal backdrop for the most fashionable and daring interior.

In this case, you can use your imagination to the fullest and combine colors so that the walls in the nursery ideally complement the vintage, classic or fairy-tale style of the children's bedroom.

Options for painting walls in the nursery:

  • Textured coloring. This type of finishing allows you to create a very interesting texture that is pleasant to the touch. It could simply be clearly protruding intricate textured lines or a visual imitation of stone, sand or wood
  • Divide the wall horizontally . In this case, you can use two completely different colors, for example, white and chocolate or dark green and soft yellow. If you paint the walls in the nursery this way, then keep in mind that the darker color should always be at the bottom
  • Ombre . It will appeal to those who don’t really like sharp transitions. To achieve the desired result, you will have to apply one color to the walls, just in different shades. But even in this case, the darkest shade should be at the bottom, and the lightest at the top.

DIY drawings on the walls in the children's room

Rules for drawing a picture on the wall
As already mentioned a little above, you can make a beautiful picture by hand or using a stencil. But no matter how you make it, remember one thing, your child should like it, be bright and colorful, but not stand out too much from the rest of the interior.

Therefore, when planning the concept of a future drawing, be sure to consider how well it will combine with the wall decoration and furniture in the nursery.

Rules for drawing:

  1. First, prepare the walls. Remove old wallpaper, plaster the walls and be sure to level them
  2. Buy the materials you will need to apply the drawing (brushes of different sizes, acrylic paints and stencils)
  3. At the next stage, you can proceed to applying the main background of the picture. It should harmonize as well as possible with the rest of the color scheme of the walls.
  4. Next, using an ordinary pencil, draw the outline of the drawing (if you use a stencil, then just lay it in the right place) and begin to carefully paint the future masterpiece

How to draw a tree on the wall in a nursery, photo

A bright tree in a nursery
A tree on the wall in a nursery can be either very small or very voluminous. Its size and color scheme will depend on the size of the room and the height of the ceilings.

Recommendations to help you draw a tree on the wall:

  1. Select a place for this tree that is as light as possible and uncluttered with furniture.
  2. Remove old paint, wallpaper, seal all cracks and cracks and apply a thin layer of leveling material
  3. When everything is dry, start sketching the future drawing.
  4. To do this, use a simple pencil to draw the contours of the tree and all of its branches, even the smallest ones.
  5. At the next stage, start coloring the picture.
  6. Start with the largest and most voluminous parts and only then move on to thinner branches, leaves and flowers
  7. Once all the base colors have been applied, you can take other shades and use them to create deeper color accents

Second life of an old suitcase

Often the issue of storing toys is acute. If you are faced with such a problem, then we suggest making a stylish box from an old suitcase.

Let's prepare the following:

  • suitcase;
  • small legs – 4 pcs.;
  • acrylic primer;
  • varnish;
  • thin foam;
  • textile;
  • scissors;
  • paints;
  • brushes;
  • PVA glue;
  • centimeter.

We remove all excess from the suitcase and wipe off dust. Apply two coats of primer, and then paint the outer part and ends.

Leave the suitcase until completely dry.

We measure the dimensions of the suitcase and cut the foam rubber or padding polyester exactly to its dimensions. We sew together the insulation with the fabric that we chose for the lining.

We put the resulting lining into the suitcase and fix it with PVA glue.

We paint flowers on the surface of the suitcase with acrylic paints. It is better to choose neutral shades for this so that the product matches the decor of the room.

We coat the suitcase with varnish and leave it until dry.

We make holes in the suitcase and screw in the legs so that they are securely fixed.

If desired, you can decorate it with additional decor.

You can also make a beautiful dollhouse from a suitcase, which every girl dreams of.

We will prepare the following materials:

  • suitcase;
  • chalk;
  • slate paint;
  • brushes;
  • acrylic paint;
  • scissors;
  • parquet varnish;
  • cardboard;
  • stationery knife.

We paint the inside of the suitcase with white acrylic paint. We do this twice so that the color is as clear as possible, without bald spots. Leave the suitcase until completely dry and cover it with parquet varnish.

We paint the outside of the suitcase with chalkboard paint.

We cut out shelves for the future dollhouse from thick cardboard.

We insert shelves into the suitcase.

From the outside we draw the facade of the house with chalk. If something goes wrong, you can always erase the drawing with a damp sponge and draw again!

We fill the suitcase with various toys and light doll furniture.

Rainbow on the wall in a children's room, photo

Rainbow on the wall in the nursery

  • A rainbow on the wall can be a great option for updating the space in a nursery. If you have perfectly leveled the walls before the main finishing work, then you can quite easily paint it on top of the wallpaper or paint. It is best to draw a rainbow by hand and do it with someone in pairs
  • This way you can draw the correct outline the first time and you won’t have to adjust the sketch several times. If you wish, you can complement it with soft blue clouds and a bright smiling sun. If your child's room is small, then don't paint the whole rainbow.
  • Let it be a small piece peeking out from behind a bookcase or bedside table. This will also look quite cute, but at the same time it will not overload the interior of the nursery too much.

Panel in the form of a name

A stylish panel with the child’s name can be a wonderful decoration for a child’s room.

To make it at home you will need:

  • wooden plank;
  • threads of different colors;
  • scissors;
  • nails;
  • hammer;
  • pliers;
  • sheet A4;
  • pencil;
  • eraser.

On an A4 sheet of paper we draw the child’s name. If you wish, you can simply print it out.

We place a piece of paper with the name on a wooden board. We fix the nail on the edge of the letter and hammer it in with a hammer. Drive in the remaining nails one at a time at equal distances.

When all the nails are on the board, remove the sheet of paper.

We tie the tip of the thread to one nail and weave it between the nails so as to fill the space of the letter.

We repeat the same with the remaining letters, changing the color of the thread for each of them. This results in a kind of gradient effect.

The panel can be placed on a table or attached to the wall.

Letters on the wall in the nursery

Decor in the form of letters

  • If you think that letters can be used as decor only for a nursery where a primary school-age child will live, then you are deeply mistaken. If you use this finishing method correctly, it can even be used in a teenager’s room.
  • The letters can be used as a separate accent or be combined into words, for example, the name of the owner of the room or simply an interesting phrase. This decoration can be placed anywhere around doors, near the bed, closet with clothes and even on the ceiling
  • The best thing is that letters can be not only an element for wall decoration. If you already have them bright enough, then make original pillows, garlands, hangers and holders for small toys from the letters

Wall design ideas for children of different sexes

Companion colors or any other compatible color scheme will allow you to divide the space into certain zones and at the same time maintain the integrity and organicity of the design, and decorate the nursery in the same style. Such decor always looks bright, unique and positive.

Soft wall in the nursery - soft panels

Soft wall in a children's room

  • Soft wall panels are an ideal element of children's room decor. There are several types of this finish - leather, fabric and leatherette. For a child's room, the most suitable type of panels is made of fabric. They are particularly soft and environmentally friendly
  • In addition, fabric panels have a fairly wide range of colors, which allows you to create quite unexpected color combinations. If you are not constrained by finances, then you can make such finishing to order. In this case, you can individually choose the size of the panels, their color, as well as the pattern that will be applied to them
  • As a result, you can not easily decorate the walls with them, but create interesting interior elements that will distract attention from the size of the room or the height of the ceilings. Most often, 3D panels are installed in children's rooms. In addition to the fact that the soft finish looks very nice, it also helps to hide all the communications that could interfere with the child’s ability to play normally.

Ideas for Beginners

Not everyone can boast of having artistic abilities. Not everyone can afford the services of a professional either. In this case, you can use stencils or limit yourself to simple geometric elements. Everyone, without exception, can handle this type of work, regardless of their existing drawing skills. This design will fit perfectly into the decoration of a girl’s room and a boy’s interior. You can make original decor that will make the decoration unique and inimitable. The ideal option is to listen to the plans and ideas of the child himself.

Clouds using a stencil

Clouds will perfectly complement elegant and delicate interiors. Such images are very easy to apply either using stencils or by hand. However, templates will allow you to create identical elements.

To complete the work you will need:

This decor is suitable for both the upper part of the walls and the ceiling.

Trees and plants

Floral designs are ideal for decorating children's rooms, especially if their owner is a female person. Little beauties will be delighted with the colorful chamomile field, and for a teenager you can choose ornate floral patterns or 3D images of flower buds. Flowers always bring tenderness and a warm spring mood to a room.

A grove with delicate birch trees and fairy-tale animals, exotic trees with bright birds, individual branches with miniature green leaves, blooming sakura or a whole garden of apple trees covered with delicious ripe fruits will look great in a little girls’ room.

The tree can be placed in the center of the wall or in the corner, creating a charming fairy-tale area. The crown can be extended and brought to the ceiling. You will get the feeling that you are under a real oak or birch tree.

Cartoon characters

What child wouldn’t want characters from his favorite cartoons and games to live in his room? Girls, of course, will choose fairy-tale princesses and their funny helpers - mice, gnomes, birds. Boys will prefer images or emblems of Superman, Spider-Man, Batman. You can complement the image by placing his attributes near the character - Cinderella’s shoe or pumpkin carriage, a basket of pies or Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother’s house, a turnip, running boots.

Geometric figures

Geometric shapes, outlined or filled, will always come in handy in any children's room. They can be arranged in rows, in a checkerboard or chaotic order. Circles, triangles, rhombuses, squares add dynamism and brightness to the interior. It is impossible to “grow out” of this option. It is suitable for both a baby’s room and a teenager’s home. The figures can be alternated, tilted, superimposed on one another - here your imagination is not limited in any way. If you like the latest design option, do not forget that each previous layer must dry completely before applying the next one, otherwise the paints will mix and the pattern will acquire unclear outlines and a dirty tint.

Beautiful inscriptions

You can use inscriptions to decorate the room. A bright alphabet would be very appropriate on the wall in the rooms of older preschoolers and first-graders. This element of the interior has not only a decorative role, but also a very practical one - the child will learn letters faster and begin to master the skill of reading. Older children can choose a saying they like, a call to visitors to the room, a slogan with strong energy, a favorite poem or the lyrics of a song that inspires them. For lyrical poems, it is better to choose an exquisite calligraphic font.

World map

In addition to the map, you can purchase a talking pen with special stickers. By encoding and sticking them on certain places on the card, you can listen to the recorded information. To do this, you just need to touch the sticker with the tip of the pen, and the device will immediately tell your child the name of the country, its capital, and tell you about the population and attractions of a particular area.

Such decor helps create the right atmosphere in a themed interior. For example, in the room of a little “sea wolf” a treasure map is very appropriate, which will be an excellent companion to a pirate chest upholstered in clapboard, a crib reminiscent of a ship’s deck and characteristic decor in the form of anchors and steering wheels.

Vinyl wall stickers for children's rooms

Vinyl sticker of Winnie the Pooh and his friends

  • Although vinyl stickers are nothing more than ordinary children's pictures on a self-adhesive basis, sometimes it is these seemingly not very noticeable interior details that set the tone for the atmosphere in the nursery. If you wish, you can create compositions from them that cover the entire wall or use them to divide the room into separate zones
  • The only thing you should consider is that you should not place bright vinyl stickers in the area in which the child is learning lessons. This will greatly distract his attention and make it difficult to concentrate on his homework. If you want such decor to carry at least a minimal semantic load, then select stickers containing a gaming element
  • These can be riddles, short questions or a colorful maze. If you just want to refresh the space, then give preference to flowers, floral patterns, animals, juicy fruits and cartoon characters

How and where to attach temporary decor

It all depends on the type of jewelry. For example, vinyl stickers can be attached anywhere: they stick well and are not easy to tear off. The same goes for photo wallpapers or purchased applique elements.

The colors of the decor and walls should be in harmony, but not merge Source designstilno.ru

Homemade decorations can be attached using instant or hot glue. However, if removed, the wall covering will be damaged. Another option is to attach it using double-sided tape.

Temporary decorations can be attached to pins, but only if they are high enough. Otherwise, the child will be able to reach them and get hurt.

Slate, marker or chalk wall in the nursery: drawing board

A slate board covering the entire wall.
A child of any age will love this decorative element. Young children will be able to calmly draw their first masterpieces on them, and older children will be able to leave messages to their parents or simply express themselves.

The size of such decor can be completely different. The slate board can be placed above the desk or occupy an entire wall. Here everything will depend on the wishes of the child and the size of his nursery.

Advantages of slate marker and chalk wall:

  • Develops fine motor skills of the hands
  • Helps baby calm down
  • Promotes the development of creativity

How to decorate a wall with photographs in a nursery and a photo panel

Panel from photographs

  • Photo panels are an excellent alternative to stickers, drawings and photo wallpapers. In this case, you practically won’t have to spend money on material, because to create this decorative element you will need your family photos, nails, threads and frames
  • Separately, it is necessary to say about the size of the photo panel. If you want this decorative element to be the main highlight of the interior, then make it as large as possible. If you plan to give the room more comfort and warmth, make a small panel
  • The easiest way to make this kind of decor is to buy the largest possible photo frame (if you have the skills, then make it yourself) and put the photos in it in random order. And if you want to get a more original decor, then enlarge the portrait of the child or your shared photo with him, divide it into several parts, and put them in pre-purchased frames. Attach all the frames to the wall so that they fold back into the original photo

To decide whether you need to lay a carpet in a child’s bedroom, you should familiarize yourself with its advantages:

  • the carpet is an excellent decoration for the play area;
  • the surface of the carpet is soft;
  • it prevents slipping and falling;
  • absorbs noise;
  • contributes to the creation of stylish design.

Disadvantages include the ability of carpets to collect dust, dirt, mites, pet hair, and pathogenic organisms. Deep and regular cleaning is necessary.

Wall stickers for a children's room

Stickers for a boy's bedroom
You probably already understand that the interior of a child's room should be bright and thoughtful. After all, the well-being and development of a little person depends on how visually attractive the room looks. Therefore, if you want your baby to feel your warmth and care, try to create a cozy and harmonious interior for him.

Stickers, or decorative stickers as they are also called, can help you achieve this result. You can place funny cartoon faces right next to the baby's crib or make the bedroom play area more attractive. You can decorate the place where you and your child read books with floral motifs and butterflies, or decorate the door to your child’s room in an original way.

Ceiling and floor

A ceiling surface with a starry sky or a map is the most favorite technique. A tension or two-tier structure with interesting LED lighting is not excluded

Suspended parts can float above in the form of:

  • Airships;
  • Strange birds;
  • Stars;
  • Clouds;
  • Planets.

The flooring is preferably made of wood or cork parquet; these materials retain heat for a long time and are pleasant to walk on barefoot. Cork has high bactericidal and insulating qualities, and its shock-absorbing properties will protect children from injury when falling.

The play area is equipped with small rugs with a non-slip base; they may have a geometric pattern - checkered, striped, polka dots.

Large carpets with long pile are not welcome - they are collectors of dust and possible allergens.

Clock and shelves on the wall in the nursery

Clocks for the children's room
No matter how funny it may sound, even from clocks and shelves you can make original decor for the walls of the nursery. True, if you want it to be exactly like this, you will have to forget about the classics for a while and try to find something more original. If we talk about watches, they should have an interesting shape and bright colors.

It would be nice if they were decorated with additional decorative elements from any materials that are pleasant to the touch. The shelves must also be original. They can be made in the form of a garden fence, an airplane, a complex geometric figure, or even letters.

Wall requirements

The following conditions apply to the walls of the children's room:

  • materials of the supporting structure and finishing must be completely harmless to the health of the child and environmentally friendly;
  • walls simply must be strong. There should not be situations where a child running at speed breaks through a partition with his body;
  • the colors used to paint the walls of the child’s room should be neutral.
