Large selection of tiles for a small toilet. Finish and design options

The ideal finishing option for the toilet is tile. Regardless of its type (ceramic, stone, mosaic), it is durable, durable and easy to maintain. The choice of tiles is quite large. On the market you can find glass, mirror, textured coatings, options with patterns, etc. But the more diverse the assortment, the more difficult it is to decide on the option that is suitable for a small bathroom.

Mosaic in a small toilet

The main advantage of mosaic in comparison with conventional ceramic tiles is that it is suitable for covering uneven, convex and asymmetrical surfaces. Using small tiles of different colors, you can lay out various patterns, geometric shapes and even entire panels. To make it, ceramics, steel, mirrors or glass are used.

If the bathroom has a modest area, then it is recommended to choose light colors for its decoration. This will visually expand the space, making it more open and light. A light beige palette would look ideal here.

For an ultra-modern style interior, mosaics in cool tones can be combined with marble floors and plenty of mirror surfaces. To create a futuristic atmosphere, a mirrored ceiling, a built-in lighting system and non-trivial sinks are suitable.

A colorful mosaic of rich shades will look bright on an accent wall against a background of white trim and plumbing. The small tile looks impressive next to the glossy tiles on the adjacent wall and mirror surfaces.

Marble

Marble is a natural stone created from limestone that has been crushed and heated by the earth over millions of years. Exquisite and traditional, marble tiles can be fully polished and come in a variety of sizes. Marble can have patterns or veins, which will give the toilet an interesting flavor. To prevent staining and etching, the surface should be cleaned regularly with non-acidic cleaners

Marble tiles are highly durable. It is available in a wide range of colors due to variations in their mineral content. Marble tiles are also available in a variety of finishes, including polished, tumbled, matte and honed finishes. This versatility makes marble an ideal choice for any home space, including the closet.

Marble tiles also add aesthetic value to any home. It makes your home look stylish and improves its overall value. However, the downside is the cost and maintenance factor. Marble is expensive and time-consuming to maintain. In addition, it naturally absorbs moisture and is not stain resistant.

The cost of toilet tiles varies significantly depending on the material, size and design. Tile is not an expensive material, but its cost can increase if installation costs are included. Laying floor tiles is a labor-intensive process and requires the prior installation of a suitable subfloor and cement slab.

Use of porcelain stoneware

Durable ceramic tiles, better known as porcelain tiles, are commonly used for flooring. But recently, more and more often it can be found on the walls of small toilets. This cladding option is considered the most convenient. Typically, porcelain stoneware is large in size, so its installation will take much less time. And the variety of colors on the market allows you to use this finishing option to decorate a bathroom in any style.

Those who prefer minimalism in everything can be advised to decorate the walls in a small toilet with medium-sized glossy porcelain tiles.

If you choose dark tiles to decorate a small bathroom, then you need to take care of high-quality lighting in the room. Otherwise, it will not be comfortable to be here.

Porcelain tiles stylized as natural wood will look good in a modern interior.

Decor

This year, gold decorative elements are in fashion - brass, copper, gold-plated steel. They create the effect of luxurious style, coziness and a special atmosphere of comfort. Gilding harmonizes perfectly with natural materials and vintage shapes:

  • soap dishes with a ceramic base;
  • cozy sconce on the wall;
  • screw mixers.

This style, of course, contradicts minimalism. But not everyone likes it; many prefer classic or vintage. The main thing in decor is to maintain a single style from start to finish.

Finishing a small toilet with textured tiles

Recently, sculptural tiles with convex surfaces have become quite popular. Thanks to it, you can provide the room with not only color, but also texture variety. The price of such material is higher than ordinary ceramic tiles. However, the effect obtained after such cladding is worth the money spent.

To save a little money, you can use a textured tile model for only one accent wall. It is enough to cover adjacent surfaces with plain wallpaper or paint them in the desired color.

Glossy textured multifaceted tiles used to decorate an accent wall allow you to add special color and brightness to the room and raise the overall level of the bathroom.

When decorating a toilet in baroque or classic style, use original mother-of-pearl wall cladding. Dark wood furniture will add a noble color to textured tiles.

Video description

This video shows how to lay tiles on a wall:
The work is as follows:

  1. First you need to decide where the cut edge will go - top or bottom. Usually they try to leave the trimmings at the bottom so that they do not catch the eye.
  2. Then you need to measure the height of the wall and calculate how many whole tiles will fit in one row.
  3. A line is drawn along the edge of the bottom row around the perimeter of the room, along which a metal profile or flat strip is screwed. It will act as a guide during installation and additional support.
  4. They begin to lay out the tiles, starting from the edge of the plank upward. Every 2-3 rows you need to stop for a few minutes so that the glue has time to harden and does not spread.
  5. When the adhesive mixture has completely hardened, the plank is removed and the cut tiles are laid in its place.

In the corners, the tiles are laid in a butting pattern: one tile slightly overlaps the second at a right angle. The second option is to trim the side of the tile at 45 degrees. Thus, the two tiles butt together to form a right angle. The second method looks more beautiful, but requires special equipment and knowledge.

Grout

You can grout the seams only after the solution has completely dried (the exact time is indicated on the composition itself). The surface must be thoroughly cleaned with a vacuum cleaner, removing dust and glue residues. Using a rubber spatula, spread the grout along the seams.

In corners and at the junction of the wall and floor, you can additionally use silicone sealant. All this is necessary to completely protect the room and tiles from moisture.

Small toilet design with colorful tiles

This non-trivial and bright finishing material for cladding toilets began to be used a very long time ago. Thanks to him, the bathroom is filled with a positive mood. Typically, multi-colored tiles are used to highlight an accent area, the perimeter of a room, plumbing fixtures, or individual interior items.

Using patchwork style material is quite expensive. In addition, if it is used to decorate the entire room, it will turn out to be too colorful. Therefore, it is chosen to decorate individual areas, especially those that are subject to the most pollution or are constantly in contact with water. Such a colorful pattern makes the bathroom cheerful and light.

Thanks to the bright finish of the accent wall, you can create a unique interior for the room. In this case, it is better to make the adjacent walls neutral, using light-colored finishes.

Combination options and installation methods

To cover the walls and ceiling of the toilet, tiles of one or several sizes are used, differing in texture and color. A monochromatic interior seems boring to many, so many choose a combination of two or three colors. The classic and at the same time most popular design option is a dark bottom and a light top. It is better not to use contrasting combinations, as it does not look appropriate in small rooms. It is best to give preference to tiles in light colors, which will visually increase the size of the room. Bright and contrasting inserts will help create a feeling of relief.

For flooring, it is best to use brown, lilac or blue. If the toilet has high ceilings, then the floor may be red, but for many, this color scheme quickly begins to irritate. In order to expand the space, the shortest wall can be made brighter by decorating it with a wide stripe made of tiles of contrasting color. Also, to decorate the toilet in the apartment, tiles in beige and peach, pink and turquoise, gray and light green colors are used.

As for the features of laying finishing material, the following methods are used for this:

  • Classic is the simplest type of installation, in which the tiles are laid tightly together parallel to the walls.
  • Offset - brickwork is repeated, in which each subsequent horizontal strip is offset by half the length of the tile.
  • Diagonal laying is a complex and interesting option, for which plain square tiles are used. This method allows you to visually enlarge the room, hiding its roughness and imperfections.
  • Herringbone is a parquet version of laying tiles, for which rectangular tiles are used, for example, imitating wood.
  • Modular installation is the most original option that is suitable for decorating a small toilet. Most often, the method is used to finish the floor, laying it out in modules of different colors and sizes.
  • A combination of several options listed earlier.

Classic subway tiles

This name was given to tiles that are shaped like brickwork. It can be ceramic, mirror, glass, granite, marble or made of stone. This type of bathroom design has always been and will remain relevant.

Dark tiles look impressive with snow-white sanitary ware, and pastel shades will make the room sophisticated and sophisticated. Mirror cladding will not only decorate a small bathroom, but will also make it visually wider. However, when choosing this material you need to be prepared for constant cleaning.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before you go to a hardware store for a finishing material, it is important to know what advantages it has and why it remains a top seller. The main advantages of ceramic tiles:

  • High strength.
  • Resistant to chemicals found in cleaning products and detergents.

  • Easy to care for.
  • Resistant to mold and mildew.
  • Waterproof.
  • Practicality.
  • Attractive appearance.
  • Affordable price.
  • Wide range of shapes, colors and textures.

However, there are some drawbacks; ceramic tiles have the following:

  • Fragility. It would seem that we have just argued that this material is strong and reliable, but at the same time fragile. The thing is that ceramics easily break when laid on an uneven surface, as a result of which uneven loads are placed on the tiles.
  • The tiles do not hold heat well and are unpleasant to walk on barefoot. This can be corrected by connecting a heated floor system.

Combined tiling of a small toilet

A successful option for decorating a toilet can be to use several types of tiles on one surface that differ in shade or texture. A combination of subway tiles and textured multi-colored ones will look bright in a small space. Mosaic and ceramic tiles complement each other perfectly.

Mosaic

Mosaics are tiny tiles. They can be made from a variety of materials, including ceramic materials, porcelain, natural stone or glass. For toilet use, there is a wide range of options available, ranging from glazed or unglazed tiles.

Recommendations for choosing tiles for a small toilet

To visually expand a modest-sized room, you can use several effective techniques:

  • decorate individual zones with mosaics or create panels from them;
  • lay tiles diagonally;
  • choose facing materials in cool shades;
  • use tiles with a mirror surface;
  • choose decor of abstract forms.

Very often, when decorating small bathrooms, designers divide the wall with a border horizontally. The shade of the upper part of the wall should be much lighter than the lower one. If you plan to use a decorative border, it is best to place it at eye level.

The optimal size of tiles that are planned to be used to decorate the wall in a small toilet is considered to be 10*10 and 15*15. The smaller the size of the material, the more it will be needed to decorate the room, and the wider the room will look.

DIY cladding

To finish the toilet floor with your own hands, you will need: tiles, glue, plastic crosses and wedges. To draw up any clear design idea, it is better to draw out the location of the tiles on a sheet of paper in advance.

Laying begins from the corner farthest from the entrance. The solution is applied using a notched trowel to the floor immediately before laying the tiles. Using a building level, you must ensure that the floor surface is free of distortions and unevenness. Plastic crosses are inserted on all sides of the laid tiles.

Briefly about the main thing

Laying tiles in the toilet and bathroom is a simple procedure that can be easily done on your own.

When choosing tiles, it is important that they match the interior in color, texture and size. With its help, you can visually correct the shortcomings of the room.

The glue and grout must be waterproof, otherwise mold will develop. Cement mortar is most often used as glue.

When working, it is important to act carefully and not rush. If the plate has “moved away”, you need to immediately correct it before the mixture hardens.

Texture

In addition to white, only 1 tile can be made without texture - imitation marble. It suits both modern and classic bathroom design styles. But the main thing to understand is that marble is a risky option. It is difficult to formalize which marble tiles are good. Therefore, we look at specific examples. Very poor marble imitation:

Normal:

Cool:

There is a thin line between good and bad marble tiles, if you are not sure, choose something else.

To imitate all other materials, in addition to the pattern, the texture must also be conveyed. On stands this is usually not felt as much as after installation. Photos on the Internet also convey the texture very poorly. Everything needs to be seen live and definitely touched with your hands.

The hottest tile designs in 2022 are concrete and wood. The former look very cool in a matte finish (but matte is more expensive), and wood with a deep texture. Because the concrete is gray and uneven, even if there is no texture it is very practical and water stains are not visible on it. Let's look at the options for gray cladding in real photos.
