Mirror wall in the interior: solid walls, decorative techniques, photo examples

In a modern interior, there are many techniques that are designed to highlight a certain area and visually expand the space. For this purpose, a mirror panel on the walls is most often used; it has a reflective surface and allows you to create an individual design in any room.

Mirror panels

Mirror panels have found their application not only in commercial but also in residential premises. Any room in the house is transformed by decorating the ceiling and walls with mirrored surfaces.

Use in the apartment:

The interior of the kitchen space is transformed when mirrors appear in it, but this also requires careful care. The solution to the cleaning issue is a glass surface cleaner.

In commercial spaces, mirror plastics are used:

Reflective surfaces significantly expand and complicate the interior:

The panels are used to decorate walls, ceilings, furniture, columns, doorways (including arched ones), and kitchen aprons.

Varieties

Mirror plastic is actively used in many industries. It is divided into several types, each of which has its own characteristics.

Acrylic

Acrylic plastic or plexiglass is the most common material for making mirror polymer coatings.

It has many advantages:

  • ease;
  • practicality;
  • resistance to impacts;
  • moisture;
  • high temperatures;
  • high reflectivity;
  • image clarity;
  • the surface does not deteriorate under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.

The downside is that acrylic is quite soft and scratches easily. But this can be avoided if you use a protective coating for the surface.

The reverse side of the amalgam of acrylic mirror material can be painted in different colors, which makes it possible to use it for decoration.

Based on the material they make:

  • mirror panels of walls and ceilings;
  • furniture inserts;
  • interior partitions;
  • door systems;
  • fences

The fastening method is determined individually in each case.

Sheet polystyrene

Another type is impact-resistant polystyrene sheet , which includes a polystyrene composite and synthetic rubber. The latter allows you to increase the reliability and strength of the material. To obtain a mirror coating, an aluminum-coated film is used instead of a conventional mirror.

Since polystyrene is an opaque base, the mirror coating is glued to its working side. To prevent damage to the coating, a protective film is applied on top.

Mirror polystyrene has the following advantages:

  • it is flexible and durable at the same time;
  • resistant to temperature changes and chemicals;
  • not susceptible to scratches and cuts.

Polystyrene lends itself well to all types of processing . It is used for the production of decorations, advertising structures, fences, and interior decoration elements. The thickness of the material is small, and it bends well, so it is well suited for decorating curved surfaces.

PVC Tiles

A modern material that is widely used in construction and interior decoration. Its composition includes a polyvinyl chloride base and a reflective layer, which is both a working surface and a protective film.

The advantages of this material are the following:

  • reduced hygroscopicity: even with long-term exposure to water, it does not deform and does not absorb moisture;
  • Fire safety;
  • high strength;
  • resistance to relatively aggressive environments;
  • the ability to process with both hand and power tools;
  • high elasticity;
  • health safety;
  • resistance against fungal microorganisms;
  • ease of use.

The material can have different thicknesses, which will determine the type of the final product. It is used for the manufacture of ceiling and wall panels, self-adhesive tiles, films, and rolls.

Self-adhesive wall panels

Plastic with an adhesive base is flexible in rolls and sheets . The peculiarity of the soft mirror material in rolls is that a day before working with it, you need to unroll it and press it down with something so that it straightens out. Both types can be attached to almost any surface.

Hand or electric tools can be used for processing. To prevent cutting from damaging the material, it must be possible to cool the surface being cut.

Polyvinyl chloride with mirror effect

Polymer-based material, characterized by high resistance to external conditions, good elasticity and stylish appearance. It is environmentally friendly and is used in construction and interior decoration .

The main countries producing polyvinyl chloride with a mirror effect are Italy, Austria, Germany, Russia, China.

How and which ones to choose?

PVC panels

Plastic panels have stiffening ribs in their design, and the strength of the decorative sheet material depends on them.

Criterias of choice:

Plastic panels are used in decorating spaces and making signs.

Acrylic

Acrylic plastics are used for the production of wardrobe doors, outdoor advertising, and signs. Can be used anywhere in the interior, even in the bathroom and kitchen. But I didn’t find any use in the exterior, because... Each layer of the sheet has a different degree of expansion and contraction with temperature changes. Self-adhesive acrylic panels can be used in rooms exposed to a lot of UV rays.

Polystyrene panels

Polystyrene tiles are also used only inside rooms (for example, for ceilings); they are used in the manufacture of advertising, signs, and decorations.

Depending on the substance from which mirror sheet plastics with an adhesive layer are made, the manufacturer, the size and thickness of the sheet, the cost varies:

Mirror polystyrene

Impact-resistant polystyrene sheet is another common type of polymer mirror. As a rule, a polystyrene composite with synthetic rubber is used as the starting material for applying a mirror coating. The presence of the latter reduces the likelihood of microscopic cracks appearing on the surface of the material, increases strength and reliability of operation.

As a reflective element, a mirror polyester film coated with aluminum is glued onto the polystyrene sheet.

Unlike acrylic, polystyrene is not transparent, so the mirror coating is applied on the working side of the material, which acts as a base. To avoid damage to the coating, an additional protective film is applied on top of it.

Mirror polystyrene sheets are characterized by a high degree of flexibility and strength. The upper temperature limit at which polystyrene retains its technical characteristics is +70 degrees. The material resists impacts, scratches and cuts well. It is not destroyed by contact with chemically aggressive environments.

Processing mirror polystyrene is not difficult, but when cutting and drilling, it is necessary to take into account that the most vulnerable point of the composite is the surface of the connection between the polymer base and the reflective film.

To avoid breaking contact between layers when working with the material, the following rules should be followed:

  • to make holes, use high-speed drilling equipment, and drill from the side of the mirror film;
  • cutting with a laser tool is carried out from the uncoated polystyrene side;
  • when cutting with a mechanical tool, clean the line of the planned cut from the protective coating;
  • The material can be glued to various surfaces. For this purpose, special adhesive compositions based on neoprene are used;
  • It is not recommended to bend sheets of mirror polystyrene using local heating, as this can lead to peeling of the polyester film.

When using the material, you must ensure that moisture and water do not get on the unprotected ends of the sheets. The surface of composite polystyrene is cared for using a sponge moistened with acrylic glass cleaner.

Mirror polystyrene has found wide application for the manufacture of decorations, interior design elements, and advertising and information structures. Due to its small thickness and good flexibility, polystyrene is used for finishing surfaces with curvature.

Mirror wall in the interior: solid walls, decorative techniques, photo examples

A solid mirror wall is an aggressive technique, so designers often use panels with special processing that allows each mirror to stand out and smooth out the emphasis on the reflection. Exactly the same layout methods are used to create wall mirror panels.

1. Beveled tiles are the most popular finishing material when you need to somehow complicate the wall surface. Bevels are beveled edges on a mirror panel (or tile). Thanks to the facets, each panel in the mirror wall becomes more voluminous, and additional edges create a beautiful play of reflections and light.

In the bedroom there is a mirrored wall behind the head of the bed. This is important as it reduces psychological discomfort. The faceted cut of the tiles does not cause the effect of crushing the room, because the interior is light and without unnecessary details. Plus, nothing blocks the reflection of the lamps - both table and ceiling chandeliers. Therefore, the room turns out to be bright and easy for visual perception.

In this case, a fundamentally different method of laying out beveled tiles was used. Here we see not rhombuses, but rectangles of different sizes. It would seem nothing complicated, but it looks amazing. The more beveled the edges, the less reflective the mirror has. As a result, it turns out that the furnishings are not duplicated, but the effect of visual expansion of the space remains.

2. Emphasizing joints by creating gaps between mirrors or using additional materials for edging or framing. A wide variety of materials will be useful:

  • Wooden slats or glazing beads
  • Plasterboard moldings
  • Frames made of wood, plastic, metal, etc. Frames allow you to decorate each mirror panel as a separate picture.

In this photo you can see an example of how to design the joints of mirror panels using glazing beads. But the project itself is not entirely successful. Diamond-shaped mirrors reflect the opposite wall, divided into squares. An overabundance of geometric shapes, and even duplicated in a mirror plane, does not add comfort.

3. A specially processed and decorated mirror is another way to distract attention and distract from a clear reflection.

Design | Manufacturing | Installation

A mirror is an excellent option for decorating any interior. To give the room a special chic, the mirror is even used to cover the walls and ceiling. Moreover, such a reception can be found not only in public institutions. Mirror panels are installed:

Sometimes a mirror panel is mounted on the wall in the bedroom. The variety of materials, installation methods and decoration methods of these canvases allows you to avoid feelings of discomfort and anxiety. A mirrored interior of this type will never get boring, even if we are talking about a relaxation room. Advantages and disadvantages of coating

The main advantage of a mirror wall is its ability to visually enlarge the space. But for the effect to be maximum, the coating must reflect the sun's rays. Therefore, it is better to place a mirror opposite a source of natural light - a window.

The second plus is that the coating will be an accent, but not too bright. Unlike a painted or wallpapered surface, a mirror attracts less attention. Finally, third: the panels can be used in any room. Often designers decorate living rooms combined with dining rooms, entrance areas and bedrooms in this way. In the kitchen, finishing is less common. The environment here is too harsh. However, there are examples of projects where mirror tiles are used on the apron and walls; in the photo it looks impressive, but may not be very functional in life. But, if you cook infrequently, you can consider this option.

Mirrors also have disadvantages. The first and most obvious is the fragility of the coating. Despite modern technology, this is a very delicate material that is not easy to work with. And in life, you should be more careful with such finishing, any blow threatens to crack or chip. Therefore, it is not suitable for children.

The second drawback is soiling. Be prepared for the fact that you will have to wipe the surface at least a couple of times a week - it all depends on the area where the panels, slabs or panels are installed. In the hallway you will have to do this more often, in the bedroom - a little less often.

The complexity of installation is the third disadvantage. Unlike wooden panels, it is difficult to install a mirror yourself. You will have to contact installers, which increases the already not the cheapest finish.

Reviews

The ceiling in our office is mirrored.
The room itself is small, but thanks to the mirrors it seems huge. Most likely, they used sheets of mirrored polystyrene, which were attached to the ceiling using liquid nails or some kind of adhesive. The view is wonderful! I dream of making a ceiling like this at home, in the living room. Alesya, Belgorod
