The composition will be difficult to apply, adhesion with old paint is low.

You can paint over the previous layer if it is perfect and does not lag behind the surface. Similar paints and varnishes are applied to the old layer. For oil paint, an oil composition or alkyd enamel is suitable. Sometimes you can use an acrylic paint without removing the old layer, but the surface should be primed. To apply oil paint to oil paint, you should remove the gloss, sand the surface and only then paint.

If you plan to use light paints, then the impregnations should be the same. On dark ones, traces of the brush will be visible.

Watch the consistency of the material. It should allow the paint to soak into the wood, and the thickness of the remaining layer should provide natural leveling. If this condition is not observed, then traces of lint will be visible on the surface. You will have to remove them several times. In addition, the thickness of the second coating will vary, which reduces performance characteristics.

Be sure to seal deep cracks in the boards; water gets into them and the processes of wood rotting begin in nearby areas. Don't expect the paint to seal them. Until it dries, the cracks will be invisible, but as soon as the layer dries, the cracks will appear again. To eliminate cracks, use special wood putties.

Repair any cracks in the wood

In some articles you can find a statement that the choice of wear-resistant paint should be made taking into account the type of wood. This is not true, there are no separate paints for pine, birch or oak. We have already talked about the criteria by which materials for outdoor work are selected.

You need to renew the paint only after removing all problem areas with the old paint. At the slightest suspicion of peeling, the paint should be removed with a spatula or sanded. Keep in mind that unnoticeable microcracks in the old coating will rise and become visible.
