How to cover a drawing board with chalk if the paint has come off

Chalkboard paint is an excellent option for creating a stylish, modern interior. Elements with such a coating will be appropriate almost everywhere – from a children’s room to a solid office. Recently they have become a real design trend!

But the use of unusual paint in the interior is justified not only from a design point of view. Slate surfaces are also very practical. They are a great help in raising children, communicating with family, at work, and just in everyday life.

How to Make Chalkboard Paint

A slate (or chalk) board looks very stylish in the interior of both public institutions (cafes, restaurants, salons) and in a living room (kitchen, children's room).
And the main thing is that this is not just an interesting decorative detail, but also functional! Making slate paint with your own hands at home is not difficult!

How to Make Chalkboard Paint

You will need:

  1. Acrylic paint - 1 cup
  2. Cement - 2 tablespoons (or something that contains cement, such as tile grout)

Mix the ingredients thoroughly until smooth so that there are no lumps left, otherwise it will be ugly! So easily, by combining just two ingredients, you can get slate paint, so that you can then get a surface for drawing with chalk.

Of course, the quality of the paint obtained in this way will be inferior to the factory paint, which has high wear resistance! It may not be as aesthetically pleasing (if you mix the paint poorly) and will be more susceptible to scratches. But, as they say, “cheap and cheerful”!

Store-bought paint will cost you from 1,500 rubles. It can be found at any hardware store. The most popular paints are tikkurila and siberia.

How to make a slate/chalk board

As a base for a slate board, you can use a sheet of plywood of the required size, a wide board, plastic, etc. Before applying paint, you first need to prepare the surface a little! If it is small in size, for example, for drawing for children or for taking notes in the kitchen, then simply wipe it with a damp cloth to remove dust and let it dry. The surface, of course, must be flat and smooth! We apply the paint in 2-3 layers for strength. Let each layer dry thoroughly. Before you start drawing with crayons, let the paint dry for 24 hours.

The board can be given the shape of a house by cutting the upper corners. You can also apply paint to the top of a children’s table, on which the young artist will change the “tablecloth” every day. You can make an artist's easel.

Paint one of the walls in the children's room with slate paint and the child will no longer paint on expensive wallpaper and parquet. The wall will turn into a huge canvas, on which landscapes, heroes will constantly change and new flowers will bloom. This will be an art object that will not leave anyone indifferent.

Make a chalkboard for the kitchen! Write down recipes and any ideas on it, design a menu like in stylish cafes and restaurants, write notes to your loved ones, draw! This board will become the highlight of your hearth.

The paint color may not necessarily be the usual black or green! Any BRIGHT colors will do (pink, purple, burgundy, orange, turquoise), on which the chalk drawing will actually be visible! That is, we do not take pastel, pale colors into account. Select the shade taking into account the overall color scheme in the interior. But still, black will look great in any case.

Useful tips

Painting and subsequent drying of the surface must take place in a room with a certain microclimate, the air temperature must be at least 10°C, and the humidity must not exceed 85%. After 24 hours, the surface with a slate effect must be treated with calcium carbonate chalk, rubbing it in with soft circular movements.

The painted surface can be used no earlier than after two days. It is necessary to wait until the layer is completely cured. When preparing the composition for painting a surface, you need to correctly calculate the consumption. Textured paint has a higher composition consumption compared to slate paint. To paint 1 m² you need at least 600 g.

Slate boards and chalk lettering: we create at home!

The chalkboard has long ceased to be an exclusively school attribute. It has rapidly burst into home and office interiors, and has recently successfully conquered the interiors of cafes, pastry shops and restaurants. Today, any establishment that even slightly claims to be fashionable must acquire its own slate. As usual, there are two options: buy ready-made, but then there is a high risk that it will not be the right size or even color, or make it the way you want, yourself. I’ll tell you below how you can easily and quickly make a chalk board from a variety of materials with your own hands.

Color variety

Manufacturers are experimenting with shades. Black, white or transparent coatings are produced on an ongoing basis. Any colors can be added to them to create a blue, red, green or yellow finish. Most often, bright colors are in demand when decorating children's playrooms or bedrooms for young people.

Black lead is a traditional option for painting a blackboard or a menu area in a cafe or pub.

Ask a Question

Gray, olive, and brown tones are often used to paint office walls.

Why is it needed?

Such a useful thing in any household can be useful for a thousand different reasons:

  • it is very convenient to write about any temporary promotions (coffee to go, discounts only today, promotion of the day, etc.),
  • this is an excellent planner for the next week or month: all tasks are visible from afar and always in sight;
  • At home, this is a great way to keep children busy with drawing, practicing writing letters, learning a foreign language or vocabulary words, because the notes are always in front of their eyes and the information is remembered much faster;
  • it can become a real art object if you master chalk lettering a little yourself or order its beautiful design from a specialist.

Here are some examples of beautiful design for inspiration.

Advantages

Chalkboard effect paint has operational advantages:

  • resulting in a hard, durable coating that can withstand even mechanical wear;
  • environmental safety of the composition;
  • absence of characteristic, pungent odors;
  • ability to choose shades;
  • increased coating adhesion;
  • fire resistance, explosion safety;
  • ease of washing off drawings and inscriptions with soapy water;
  • antiseptic effect.

The functionality of coatings is difficult to overestimate. In addition to walls, this product can be used to cover kitchen aprons, doors, and individual interior items.

What materials will be needed?

I will dwell on this issue in detail, because it is the most difficult in the entire manufacturing process. First of all, because you can take almost any materials, but the result will be different. Now some details.

In order to make a chalk board, you need three things:

  1. base for painting,
  2. special paint,
  3. frame of suitable size with suspension.

We take a ready-made frame, if available, or order it from a framing workshop. If you need a standard format like 70x50 or 30x40, then it’s cheaper to buy a ready-made one at any large construction hypermarket (Ikea, Obi, Leroy Merlin and the like). But in a baguette there will be a richer choice and it is possible to make the desired size with an accuracy of 5 mm. By the way, the finished frame can be decorated so that it fits exactly into the interior. You can read more about this here.

What can be painted

Chalkboard paints are suitable for application:

  • on plaster;
  • wooden covering (for example, chipboard or fiberboard);
  • metal surfaces;
  • wallpaper for painting;
  • glass wallpaper;
  • drywall;
  • ceramic planes;
  • glass.

The only requirement concerns compliance with the temperature regime. Suitable exclusively for interior work. For maximum durability and strength of the coating, it must be applied in several layers. Especially if the coating will be used as a magnetic board.

Base for painting

The most interesting thing is that it can be almost anything:

  1. Fiberboard,
  2. chipboard,
  3. plywood,
  4. binding cardboard with a thickness of 1.2 mm.,
  5. a metal sheet.

We turned all these materials into slate boards and they behaved perfectly during further use. You can do without such a base altogether and just paint a piece of the wall in the room. The wall must be plastered and well primed. If you paint the wall, you won’t even need a frame. Let's say that what you need is a board. How to choose a material? I will briefly write about the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Cardboard is light in weight, usually a sheet of cardboard can be 70x100 cm in size. It is convenient to use, it is easy to find on sale, and if desired, it can be cut to the desired size with a regular breadboard knife. The most interesting thing is that the paint lies evenly on it, forming a thin film on the surface, after which the cardboard itself no longer resists water, so you can wipe the chalk off it with a regular damp cloth. Disadvantages of cardboard:

  • limited size,
  • without a solid back in the center on large formats it can sag in a bubble, but on 30x40 this will not happen yet, so for small sizes it is almost ideal.

Plywood is a good environmentally friendly material, suitable for large formats, it will not lead anywhere even at a size of 1.5x1.5 m. It is convenient to mount it on the wall. The fasteners can be recessed and the place where the sheet is attached to the wall can be leveled with putty. In general, it’s good for everyone with one exception: - plywood does not provide a perfectly smooth and even surface. After painting, the wood structure is visible in some places. In principle, this does not interfere with drawing, but it is not suitable for perfectionists. A metal sheet is taken in cases where you want to make the board also magnetic, but you have already purchased regular paint, without magnetic primer. The paint adheres well to metal, there are no problems with this, but thin metal can also bend at large sizes.

Chipboard and fibreboard provide a perfectly flat surface after painting. The impressive dimensions of the sheets allow you to approach the matter on a grand scale, without limiting yourself to the modest 50x60 or 70x100. The fastening points on the chipboard can also be easily masked with putty. It is more problematic to do this on fiberboard, but with some skill it is possible. A significant disadvantage of chipboard is its heavy weight. Fiberboard does not have such a drawback, which makes this material the most convenient of all the above.

Peculiarities

The main component of the product is latex, which can be diluted with water and without being exposed to harmful toxins and solvents. The ability to draw and attach magnets to the coating is explained by the fact that the chalkboard product contains tiny iron particles. The addition of gypsum, cement, acrylic resins, and marble chips determines the dullness and strength of the finished coating. Additionally, it contains dolomite, modifiers that increase the strength of the coating.

Walls can be painted in grey, black, red, blue, green or brown. For greater brightness, the mixture is tinted. If in a student’s room such a surface will help solve mathematical problems, then in the kitchen there will be a place to write down a recipe or add to the shopping list. The composition is completely natural and safe. It can be applied in residential indoor spaces.

After drying, the result is a very hard coating that is resistant to abrasion and has increased adhesion. The finished surface is non-toxic and fireproof. You can remove dust and clean dirty areas with a soft cloth soaked in a soap solution. A sponge is suitable for erasing chalk.

Choosing paint

First we need to decide what kind of slate board we will make with our own hands: regular or magnetic . For the regular one, you just need chalkboard paint. For magnetic, you need either: - magnetic primer, with which the base is first coated, and then chalk paint is applied on top of it, - magnetic chalk paint, in which both metal particles and paint are mixed at once. The latter is more convenient, since you do not have to wait separately for the soil to dry, but it costs more than the usual one. For example, Tikkurila Magnetic costs 2950 rubles. for 0.5l. (all prices in the article are indicated for February 2022) Separately, magnetic soil can be obtained at a price of 1150 rubles. for 0.5 liters, but then subsequently you will have to add the cost of paint to it.

If the board does not have magnetic properties, then all that remains is to choose which “slate” paint to buy. Interestingly, the price range for it varies greatly depending on the manufacturer and the form of release. Firstly, in the form of a spray (for example, Krylon Chalkboard Paint) it always costs several times more than what is sold in a can, so it is not at all profitable, except for those cases when you need to paint a small board and fiddle with a brush or you really don’t feel like using a roller. For all other cases, choose a can, a wide brush and a roller.

The most expensive among all manufacturers is Tikkurila. Most likely due to the promotion of the brand itself. It will cost approximately 1100r. for 1 liter regular black, about 1300 rubles. – colorizable. Yes, yes, a chalk board can be made not only in traditional black, but also in any other color: mint green, dark blue, purple, and so on. As long as it fits into the interior and is dark enough for the chalk itself to be visible. Blackboard paint from the Russian manufacturer Siberia will cost less – 990 rubles. per liter, both colorized and ready-made colors, and their color palette is quite wide (black, blue, green, brown and dark gray). Siberia has only one drawback - if Tikkurila in the regions can be found in any large hardware store, then Siberia will have to be ordered from Moscow or St. Petersburg. Both are of excellent quality. There are several other manufacturers in approximately the same price range, but I have never worked with them and can’t give you any advice on quality.

You don’t have to buy paint for chalkboards at all, but make your own by mixing black acrylic paint with a small amount of baby powder, talcum powder or something similar, finely dispersed. It will turn out to be quite a budget option for home use. We made our first board exactly this way, and it served us faithfully until we tried industrial paint. Having appreciated its coating, we also repainted the first board with industrial paint. And the surface became smoother and more even, so writing on it with chalk immediately became much more pleasant. An example of a “homemade” coating is in the photo below. On the right side there is a close-up view to show the “banding”.

In conclusion

The price of a TIKKURILA product is affected by the container volume. The cost of painting a school board will depend on the number of layers applied and the cost of tools (roller, brush, etc.). Remember, the school board perfectly fulfills its purpose if all the requirements for its coating are met. Select high-quality materials for work, follow the instructions - and the board will be great!

Chalkboard paint is considered an easy and affordable way to create a surface with a blackboard effect. On such unusual walls you can draw, erase and draw again. The dark gray surface itself looks original, and you can make thematic notes and sketches with multi-colored chalk. The option is also suitable for children's leisure.

Brief master class

After a long conversation about materials, it was finally time to make the board itself. I tell and show how we made a board from plywood in the 152x152 cm format. 1. Take a sheet of plywood and use sandpaper or a sander to smooth out everything that seems uneven. 2. We mount the sheet on the wall in several places using self-tapping screws.

3. Use putty to mask the installation sites. After drying, sand off the excess putty.

4. Prime the surface twice. 5. Use a roller to paint the surface with chalk paint. We wait for it to dry and paint again.

All is ready! All that remains is to dress it up in a baguette to give it a more finished look and hide the side surface of the sheet.

We put the remaining paint to good use: we paint all the small cardboards in the house that we can get our hands on. After drying, we insert it into a frame, and we get wonderful souvenirs that you can give to friends or leave at home for notes.

In this simple way you can decorate your home or office interior, diversify it with chalk lettering and add a little more coziness to the environment. Happy creativity and beautiful chalk boards!

Application technology and number of layers

It is recommended to paint the wall using a roller. Use a brush to paint hard-to-reach places that are located behind batteries, pipes, or at the junction of parts.

First, the area is covered with a roller in one layer. Then wait until it dries and provides good adhesion to the surface. This takes from 3 to 5 hours. Then a second layer is applied, which they try to do in the same direction as the first. This method will prevent you from creating strokes that stand out from the general background, which will be difficult to level with the surface without disturbing adhesion.

After the two-layer coating has dried, determine whether another layer needs to be applied. This is necessary if there are visible defects or errors. 3-step coverage is enough to cover common imperfections.

Attention! Experts advise not to do more than 3 applications with a stylus, so as not to create too heavy a finish that can crack under its own weight.

Varieties of CM

Chalk paint was first used in 1990 by a British designer. It went on sale under the Chalk Paint brand. The recipe remained secret. Therefore, specimens have been developed that contain different constituent elements. They are all water based and differ in additives. The name of chalk paint depends on them.

  1. Natural and synthetic resins are found in resin dyes.
  2. Silicates are mineral constituents.
  3. If casein is added, then it is milk paint.
  4. Flax oil is contained in the oil composition.

Painting creates a smooth or embossed layer. On the first one you can draw. The core of textured or slate CM is acrylic, silicone, latex emulsion.

In order for the slate coating to have the properties of a magnet, metal particles are introduced into the latex composition. Magnetic dye interacts with any material.

The chalkboard effect is created by emulsions of dark shades. In this case, chalk patterns are visible on the surface. Manufacturers have developed colorless formulations. The pigment of the desired color is introduced and converted into a colored slate board.

Mother-of-pearl composition is used to decorate walls and interior items. The ceiling is painted white. You can use the ready-made whitewash composition or prepare it yourself.

The base that comes into contact with fire is coated with fire-resistant paint. To secure the decor, the product is fired with fire. In both situations, chalk compounds are used that can withstand prolonged temperature exposure. They belong to heat-resistant materials. This group includes stained glass paints for painting glass and ceramics.

Cooking recipes

Most often, the basis for homemade paintwork is ready-made acrylic or latex paint for interior work (interior). To provide the product with the desired matte effect, a filler is introduced into it, the role of which can be played by various substances.

Recipe - basic

The most popular is a composition based on 2 parts latex paint and 1 part calcium carbonate (pure calcium carbonate). First, calcium carbonate is diluted with hot water until a creamy mass without lumps is obtained. This mass is allowed to cool completely. Meanwhile, color is added to the latex paint, mixed and a calcium carbonate-based paste is added. If this substance is not available, tooth powder can be used instead, but with large volumes of production, the cost of coatings will increase significantly.

Calcium Carbonate for Chalk Paint

Recipe - with putty or building plaster

Prepare ¾ part latex or acrylic paint and ¼ part gypsum or dry gypsum putty for walls, as well as water. Gypsum is diluted with a small amount of liquid to form a thick paste. Add the mixture to the tinted paint; if necessary, dilute the mixture with water. The coatings are mixed well and application begins immediately, since the gypsum hardens very quickly.

Recipe - with soda

The most inexpensive and accessible option for making a chalk composition is to mix 2/3 parts latex material and 1/3 parts soda. In this case, you can combine soda directly with the paint without diluting, since it dissolves well and practically does not form lumps. To obtain the composition of the desired consistency, it can be diluted slightly with water.

Recipe No. - with tile grout

It is beneficial to prepare such a product if there is still unnecessary grout left after laying the tiles. Take 1 part grout and 2 parts latex paintwork, mix thoroughly and use as intended. If the mass turns out to be thick, dilute it with water.

Grout for tile joints

Recipe No. - with cornstarch

For 2/3 of the finished acrylic (latex) paint, take 1/3 of the starch. The components are mixed and beaten with a construction mixer, gradually adding water until the desired consistency is obtained.

Flaws

When painting walls or any other surfaces in a room, it is important to take into account a possible allergic reaction to chalk dust (it is better to choose marker ones). The paintwork itself is only suitable for interior work, as it can deteriorate at sub-zero temperatures.

The surface itself must be washed thoroughly and regularly to prevent sloppiness. The surfaces to be treated must be perfectly flat. If you plan to coat aluminum or glass surfaces, they must first be carefully primed for greater adhesion.

Manufacturers

The result depends on compliance with the instructions and the technical characteristics of the brand itself. Siberia slate paint remains one of the best options.

ManufacturerSpecifications
SiberiaProducts from a Russian manufacturer. There is an assortment of magnetic, marker, and slate paints in white and black. The creation of shades is ensured by the tinting method. The composition contains antiseptics and modifiers that provide vapor permeability. The result is resistant to messy streaks.

The finished coating is reliable and durable, but can easily be scratched when in contact with sharp, hard objects. For drawings and inscriptions, it is better to abandon cheap school chalk. It contains admixtures of pebbles and sand. The wiping cloth should be clean, damp and soft.
