How much capacity do you need?

Here's the basic formula to determine how much airflow power you need.

Total volume of air required per 1/(duty cycle) = CFM

Look at your settings. How many airbrushes and sprayers will you use at the same time? One after another in order does not count. This gives you your full required volume of air.

The total volume of air required for operation is an absolute minimum. No less. Don't take anything that pumps out anything less than this number.

But there is something else to consider here.

Duty cycle, usually specified as a percentage, means that the compressor motor must only run for that percentage of every hour that the compressor is in use. This is a good recommendation to follow to ensure your compressor performs best over the long term.

Oil-free models are most often membrane compressors. They have fairly high endurance and productivity. And most importantly, in most cases, a membrane compressor is a quiet compressor, which is important for artists who work for a long time, in a small workshop or in their own apartment with relatives sleeping behind the wall.

Oil models are not very popular among artists and modellers. Quiet and small ones cannot provide the required pressure and performance parameters. More powerful ones emit heat and stop automatically - they are very difficult to use without strapping elements if you want to work with an airbrush for a long time.

Oil-free diaphragm pumps are in high demand. They are capable of:

• act without respite for a long time;
• the noise is often no louder than the power supply of a personal computer;
• provide convenient installation due to compact dimensions;
• generate the required air flow parameters.

Today, the market offers specialized membrane models for working with airbrushes from Sparmax and JAS. The latter brand has its own kind of clone. Miol compressors differ from JAS only in the country of origin. The first is Ukraine, the second is Russia. No other differences were found in the design features and parameters of the products.

Price of silent airbrush compressors

Airbrush compressors are expensive because there is no mechanical device that does not produce much noise.

It makes sense to divide all products by area of ​​use into compressors for airbrushing and units for modeling. This division is arbitrary, because both models can be used for different purposes. But still, this division is justified, since it allows us to note the main differences between compressors for two groups of buyers. What is the fundamental difference?

Modellers prefer compressors without containers for compressed air, i.e. without receivers. Also, this group of buyers tends to purchase models with a capacity of less than 20 liters per minute. As a result, the price of such goods fluctuates in the range of 4,000 - 7,000 rubles. The optimal choice for modelers of Fengda AS-16-1, Fengda AS-18 (2) or Fengda AS-18A. Each of the positions has its own characteristics, but their common features fall under the standard set of modeller requirements.

Airbrushes are more demanding. Since they need a device that works for a long time without interruptions, they opt for models with a receiver. The air container not only allows you to increase the operating time of the compressor without stopping to cool down the engine, but also stabilizes the air flow, saving the artist from “air spitting”. As a result, the compressor for airbrush artists is several kilograms heavier and a couple of tens of centimeters larger, taking into account the presence of a receiver. Airbrush artists also want to get a productive unit; accordingly, they pay attention to the power of the device and often buy compressors that produce over 20 liters per minute. The number of positions in the segment for artists is the largest, although the differences between the models are more likely to lie in the plane of convenience and taste rather than technical characteristics.

The list of products that meet the requirements stated above includes Fengda AS-186 and Fengda AS-186A, Fengda AS-189 and Fengda AS-189A, Fengda AS-188, Fengda AS-196 and Fengda AS-196A. The larger the number in the model name, the more powerful and productive the unit. Also, all models with the letter “A” at the end of the name are distinguished by the presence of steel protective casings, while the AS-188 model, although lacking the “A”, is still wrapped in a casing. In addition to differences in performance, power, protection, weight and dimensions, the devices have receivers of different volumes (from 3 to 3.5 liters), are characterized by the presence or absence of stands for airbrushes, as well as the number of outputs. For example, all models except Fengda AS-188 are equipped with only one airbrush output, but the specified device has two! But even if there is only one fitting, this problem can be solved by purchasing a special splitter. Moreover, all units are equipped with filters, pressure gauges and pressure regulators.

There is a small part of airbrush artists who are trying to choose a compressor that will handle not only an airbrush, but also a mini-spray gun. These tools require even more performance, and as a result, the buyer has to pay a lot of money for their choice. But solutions even for such problems exist. For example, Fengda AS-28A and Fengda AS-48A devices. They will pull some models of spray guns. Please note that all Fengda and Jas units are membrane or piston oil-free compressors, i.e. they do not require lubrication. But at the same time, models can have a different number of heads, from one to four. The hose outlets for all units, regardless of their technical characteristics, are identical - G1/8”. In this case, the devices are supplied without hoses, but they can be easily purchased separately.
