Silver paint: metallic silver coatings, in cans

Silver paint or “serebryanka” is a material with a characteristic metallic color, often used to protect surfaces that are constantly exposed to atmospheric influences. There is also a heat-resistant option for stoves and radiator heating systems.

In a simple version, the material consists of two components. There is nothing complicated to prepare it for work, which we will discuss below in the article.

Silver composition for surface treatment in cans

Composition and properties

Despite the name, this paint does not contain silver. It is made from aluminum powder. The resulting metal dust is diluted with a thickener.

Properties of silver for painting metal:

  1. After application, a durable metal film is formed on the painted surface. It protects the material from the destructive effects of moisture and chemicals.
  2. Protects against exposure to ultraviolet rays. Painted surfaces do not heat up in the sun.
  3. The surfaces are leveled, the texture becomes pleasant to the touch.

You can buy the dye at any construction market. Additionally, you will need varnish or drying oil.

Scope of application

Despite the decorative properties of silver enamel, in most cases it is used as an anti-corrosion agent.

Most often it is painted:

  • industrial metal structures (pipelines, power lines);
  • individual parts or the entire car (tuning);
  • roofs (galvanized and metal);
  • metal utility rooms (hangars, etc.);
  • structures in contact with water.

This paint and varnish product is rarely used to coat concrete, stone and wooden surfaces. Sometimes silver paint based on acrylic enamel is used to paint plastic products.

Types and form of release

On sale you can find two types of silverware, which differ in the production method and properties:

  1. Heat resistant paint. Finished products obtained by mixing bitumen varnish and aluminum powder. The coloring composition is resistant to high temperatures. The layer maintains its integrity when heated to 400°C.
  2. Classic silver. It is suitable for application to wooden and concrete surfaces. Does not withstand high temperatures. Not suitable for application to the surfaces of radiators and heating pipes.

Heat-resistant silver paint for metal is used for various purposes:

  • painting batteries;
  • painting metal pipes;
  • protecting metal from overheating and moisture.

It is often used for painting metal household products. On sale you can find both ready-made formulations and powder in packages that need to be diluted.

How to dilute silver enamel

Many people have a question about how to breed silverfish at home. Depending on the method of applying enamel to the surface (roller, spray, brush), you need to adjust the level of its fluidity. To make it more liquid, you should use one or more solvents at the same time (White spirit, solvent, turpentine).

For a spray gun, paint should be mixed with solvent in an equal ratio, and for a brush or roller - 1:0:5.

To dilute aluminum powder, you can use drying oil in the same proportion as when using varnish. Hand-made silver enamel can be stored for up to 6 months.

Advantages and disadvantages

Pros:

  • withstands high temperatures;
  • holds firmly to the base;
  • suitable for coating concrete, wood, metal;
  • dries quickly after application;
  • does not emit harmful substances.

Minuses:

  1. The powder is explosive. It should not be stored in direct sunlight or near flame sources.
  2. Quickly absorbs food odors.

If you apply silver to nitro enamel or NBCH paint, it will not last for a long time.

Features of choice

You need to buy gold paint taking into account the type of work you plan to do. At the same time, before purchasing, it is worth determining what influences the object to be painted will be exposed to.

For decoration

To paint decorative items, choose aerosols and sprays with a chrome plating effect. The compositions are easy to apply and can be used to process objects with non-standard shapes and designs. With the help of such products, you can create an original design, including imitation of antiquity or obtaining a matte shine.

Sprays with chrome effect and aerosols are recommended for decorating products in the interior.

If you need to paint an expensive item or jewelry, it is better to use art acrylic. This variety contains gold leaf with an original and bright effect.

For wall covering

Surfaces are treated using acrylic mixtures. Due to their versatility, the materials are used to cover concrete and other types of walls. The paint is not afraid of exposure to negative factors, and varieties such as enamel are sold at relatively low prices.

When painting wall structures, it is customary to combine several types of paints and varnishes. Subsequent layers are distributed only after the previous ones have dried. But it is recommended to apply acrylic and primer as a base coat.

For painting wood

Wooden products are treated with acrylic substances. Before carrying out the procedure, a primer or other mixture that prevents rotting should be spread over the surface.

If you need to cover a decorative frame, it is better to use an artistic acrylic mixture.

For metal processing

Such items can be painted with acrylic or blacksmith's mixture. The first option is in demand when processing products with a simple design. The second is suitable for designing more complex elements.

To paint metal parts of the surroundings, it is recommended to use acrylic paint.

Preparation and breeding

If silver metal paint was purchased in powder form, it must be prepared before application. Varnish or drying oil is suitable for diluting the dye. When choosing the second option, you need to buy only synthetic fluid.

After purchasing a liquid for diluting silverfish, you need to learn how to properly mix the dye components. Features of paint thinning PAP-1:

  1. Prepare varnish BT-577. Mix it with silver powder in a ratio of 5 to 2.
  2. When mixing components, use a mixer set to low speed.

The resulting composition can be applied to radiators and heating pipes. It can withstand heat up to 400°C.

Features of paint dilution based on PAP-2:

  1. Any varnish is suitable for mixing this type of silver powder.
  2. Mixing proportions: 3-4 parts varnish, 1 part silver.
  3. When making a coloring composition, you need to constantly stir the solution.

The resulting paint will be very thick. Before applying it to a metal surface, you need to wait 10-15 minutes.

To apply the finished coloring composition you can use:

  • synthetic brushes;
  • spray;
  • roller

Attention should also be paid to preparing metal surfaces before applying paint. To do this, you need to perform several steps:

  1. Clean the surface with a metal brush.
  2. Sweep away the dust with a broom or sponge.
  3. Remove rust using special chemical compounds.

Preparing the Paint

Characteristics of silverfish

Silver paint is a special type of paint and varnish product. It has a rich silver color that can decorate any product. This paint can easily be used to coat metal and wood products. It lays down in a dense and even layer. Thanks to this, all surface defects are hidden. In addition, with this coloring composition, any product acquires a more attractive appearance from an aesthetic point of view.

Silver got its name due to the fact that on the surface of any material, after its application, a small layer of thin film is formed, which has a silvery tint. Thanks to the special structure of the paint, virtually no smudges or cracks form on the surface. The film has a fairly dense structure that does not delaminate over time.

Silver can be used not only as a decorative finish for individual materials, but also to protect them from environmental influences. Thanks to its dense and even coating, it prevents the formation of rust or corrosion on the surface of the product. It prevents air or water from penetrating the structure of metals and other materials.

Application principles

Coloring principle:

  1. Prepare the metal surface, degrease it with a solvent.
  2. Wait until the solvent dries, mix the dye.
  3. Apply a layer of primer to the prepared surface.
  4. Wait until the soil dries, apply silver to the metal.

If you need to reliably protect the metal from exposure to water or chemicals, you need to paint it with silver in three layers. When applying new layers, you need to wait until the previous one dries.

Paint from Akzo Nobel is no less in demand. The Dutch company has earned respect due to the variety of series of paints and varnishes, the fast drying of the compositions and the low consumption of the working mixture.

Wash

During operation, paint may get on surrounding objects. To prevent this, you need to cover the surrounding surfaces with plastic film.

If paint gets on the floor or walls, it can be washed off in several ways:

  1. Place a few drops of sunflower oil on the painted area. Wait 10–15 minutes. Wipe the surface with any dry cloth.
  2. Buy nail polish remover without acetone. Apply it to the stain with a brush. Wait 5 minutes. The paint will become wet and cracks will appear. Wipe off the stain with a rag. Wash off any remaining nail polish remover with plenty of water.

When working with silverfish, you need to wear a work uniform, gloves, safety glasses, and a respirator. They will protect the respiratory tract, eyes and body from metal dust.

Silver paint has not lost popularity for several decades. This is due to its unique properties and low price. In order for the painted surface to maintain high strength and an attractive appearance, you need to take into account some nuances when preparing and applying the coloring composition.

Acrylic paint composition

Acrylic acts as the base in any acrylic paintwork material, but in addition to it, it necessarily contains a number of additional components.

Binders

The base, or binding mass of the paint, is polyacrylates in the form of an aqueous dispersion, which are considered film formers. They are responsible for strong adhesion of the composition to the surface and, thanks to their strength, ensure a long service life of the coating. The higher the quality of the base, the more reliable the dried film will be, the less it will react to mechanical damage.

Fillers

The carrier for the base in this coating is water, which makes an emulsion from the acrylic polymer. The paint dries due to the evaporation of water, but this process occurs too quickly, so retarders are added to paintwork materials - substances based on glycerin or glycol.

In addition to acrylic copolymers, paints may contain up to 10% auxiliary monomers. The latter can significantly influence the properties of the material, adjusting them according to a specific purpose. Thanks to such fillers, you can change:

  • elasticity;
  • strength;
  • hardness;
  • chemical resistance;
  • adhesion;
  • colloidal stability.

Also, paints often contain natural minerals as fillers: talc, chalk, dolomite, calcite, kaolin, mica, barite and others. Efficiency is achieved by adding crystalline fillers with high reflectivity.

Color pigments

Pigments are needed to give a specific color to paint. Usually they are a powder, less often a paste or liquid, which is added to the main composition. Pigments also increase the covering power of paintwork materials and enhance its resistance to ultraviolet radiation and other atmospheric factors.

Pigments can be organic and inorganic, synthetic and natural. Often, inexpensive weather-resistant substances are used for the acrylic composition - oxides of chromium, iron, lead, metal sulfides. Among inorganic colors, titanium dioxide is also used, which is introduced into super-white paints and has a high refractive index of light.

Organic pigments are used less frequently. They are tinting pastes of bright color, while they are more expensive, but have less resistance to weathering. Typically, pigment particles have sizes of 300–400 microns, since they optimally fill the voids between the components of the paintwork material and are evenly distributed throughout the material.

Solvents and other additives

Organic solvents are added only to special formulations, but most acrylic paints are diluted with plain water. The liquid reduces viscosity, imparts proper density and ensures ease of application. Additional substances in acrylic paints may include:

  • emulsifiers;
  • surfactant;
  • biocides;
  • defoamers;
  • stabilizers;
  • preservatives;
  • initiators.

Auxiliary additives change the quality, technical, and functional characteristics of the paint and give it special properties. They also provide the necessary shelf life, coating service life, composition stability, and regulate the process of film formation. For example, surfactants and emulsifiers help pigments to be better distributed in the total mass and reduce the surface tension of emulsions. Preservatives inhibit the development of microbes, mold, fungi, defoamers reduce foam formation, thickeners regulate fluidity.

Mixing order

When producing paint, an acrylic copolymer is first placed in a container, pigments and a solvent (water) are poured in. Then a strictly measured amount of stabilizing and targeted additives and fillers is added. When ready, the paint is packaged in containers, but each batch is first tested for compliance with GOST or TU.

VDAK-101
