Paint selection

In any store, the seller will advise you which paints are best to use for painting on glass. But before that, he will definitely ask how you will use the paint. There are several options due to which the type of paint will differ:

  • Perhaps you are looking for paints for decoration or professional painting
  • Maybe you want to give a master class or, on the contrary, practice
  • There is also the option of painting with children

Glass painting Important! Do not doubt that this is a very important point, since the cost of the material also depends on these factors. Manufacturers produce not only expensive paints that professionals use, but also budget kits with which you can learn how to make patterns and certain compositions.

  • In addition, what is important is what effect you want to get - it can be a matte or glossy finish, or vice versa transparency
  • What do you want to draw your design on? – You can draw on glass both on plates and on a bottle or window

The fact is, there are some types of paints that cannot be applied to objects that come into contact with food or detergents.

Spot painting rules

In order for any spot painting with contours to look impressive on the surface, as in the works of famous masters, it is important to follow several rules:

  1. The surface selected for application must be smooth, clean and even.
  2. The product must be degreased to prevent the dye from spreading.
  3. Spot painting on bottles, like other objects, can be applied with a variety of dyes and tools. Some are suitable for most materials, while others are highly specialized.
  4. To create beautiful patterns, you can use stencils or draw sketches yourself.
  5. It is customary to start work from the middle of the pattern.
  6. Some techniques use only the primary colors - red, yellow and blue. The human eye optically mixes nearby dots, so visually the picture has many shades.

Acrylic paints

Acrylic paint contains natural or synthetic pigments, binders and water. Both acrylic and stained glass paints are used for painting on glass. Let's look at the advantages of topcoat paints:

  1. Are opaque
  2. They tend to adhere well and are lightfast
  3. They have a wide palette of shades, while the colors are bright and you can add sparkles to them
  4. Have good abrasion resistance
  5. Do not slide off the glass when painting
  6. Professional paint has no odor
  7. Can be packaged in tubes, jars or cans

A little history

Dot patterns look very beautiful. And that’s why people in several places in the world thought of drawing dots at once. However, historians believe that the Australian aborigines were the first to come up with dotted patterns - the oldest samples were found in Australia, and these samples are about 40,000 years old! However, dot painting is also known in other areas of the world - in China and India, Indonesia and Africa, Persia and Thailand.

Since the discovery of the Green Continent, Australian paintings have been of great interest to European art historians and artists. Therefore, dots have a place in serious painting. J.-P. painted his paintings with dots. Seurat, P. Signac, L. and C. Pizarro.

Naturally, dots were also used by European peoples in traditional crafts. But we won’t touch them - after all, it’s just an element there.

Fixing the applied pattern

When the drawings on the glass are finished, they should be fixed, and I will now tell you how this can be done. It is best to fix a glass masterpiece using acrylic varnish, as it has several features:

  1. It is non-flammable and has no pungent odor. That is why it is very easy to work with such varnishes indoors.
  2. Application is quite easy, so even a beginner will not have any problems with this process.
  3. Has the property of drying quickly, and the material can be diluted with water
  4. Does not affect the original color of the paint used
  5. Due to its low cost and efficiency, one can will last you for a long time

Self-painting on glass with acrylic paints
The pricing policy for acrylic varnish is quite good; in specialized stores you can purchase the product at a price of about 150 rubles per 50 ml.

Ink, felt-tip pens, markers

There are special felt-tip pens for working with glass or ceramic surfaces. They are created in such a way that, if necessary, the applied image can be removed.

An ideally smooth canvas can be coated with a special ink that has high adhesive properties. With its help you can achieve clear lines. Application is done using a rapidograph. This tool distributes the mascara in such a way that a line of a certain thickness is obtained.

Tips for Newbies

If you are new to painting, then before you paint on glass you should remember a few tips. They will simplify the process of drawing a picture on glass with your own hands.

Painting on glass with acrylic paints

To begin with, choose transparent dishes if you are not drawing on window glass or fittings. You can choose snow-white ceramics as a background - this way nothing will distract you from applying the design. In addition, try to first draw a sketch on a sheet of paper - in the future, your hand will remember similar outlines and drawing will become much easier.

How to learn dot painting?

If at first painting with dots looks like a difficult task, then during the first work all the nuances become clear:

  1. You always need to start by degreasing and priming the surface, preparing all the necessary materials.
  2. After the soil has completely dried, spot painting of a mug or other object begins with testing the paint on the rough surface. To do this, use the selected tool or the contour itself to try to place points of the same diameter so that the paint does not spread.
  3. After some training, the outline of the future image is applied to the surface or a stencil is fixed.
  4. Paints must be applied carefully, periodically allowing the area to dry, turning the drawing over and working on the other side.
  5. If the pattern begins to blur, the defect is eliminated with a napkin or cotton swab dipped in solvent.
  6. After applying the pattern, the paints need time to dry completely. Everything ends with the application of varnish.

Choosing brushes

You can paint on glass with painting brushes; they are small in size and you can easily create complex patterns. If you decide to decorate a large area, then you should also stock up on construction brushes. Drawings are applied using brushes with a rounded end, but a flat brush should be used to secure your artwork.

Brushes for painting on glass

The choice of brush material is up to you. You can use both natural and synthetic ones. However, it should be remembered that natural bristles are used for water-based paints and varnishes. Don't forget about buying a palette knife. This is the name given to a special metal spatula that is used to mix different colors of paint.

In addition to all of the above, you can view a huge number of master classes that will help you decide on the technique of painting and even drawings. Experienced craftsmen will tell you how to properly hold a brush and apply a pattern to glass. In a professional store, sales consultants will help you choose the necessary paints and brushes - all you need is a desire to create and create interesting patterns with your own hands. Experience does not come immediately, so after the first failure you should not give up what you started. Continue to try painting with acrylic paints and involve your family in this process, because only such moments spent together are remembered for a lifetime.

Making coatings at home

Despite the fact that the production of such glass materials is at a high level, and a set of stained glass paints can be easily bought in a store, some artists prefer to make them themselves.

They are prepared on the basis of an organic substance such as gelatin, which must be diluted with BF-2 glue or transparent furniture varnish. To give the desired shade, fabric dyes are added to the mixture. They can be replaced with regular gouache.

If you are creating stained glass windows with your own hands for the first time, then after applying freshly prepared paint, it must be secured with colorless varnish to avoid the pattern being washed off with water.

Tools and operating procedure

The following products can be used for application:

  1. Flat brush.
  2. Hard brush.
  3. Spray gun.
  4. Paint roller.
  5. Foam swab.

The choice of tool is determined from the point of view of the painter's convenience and surface area. It is easier to paint small glasses with a brush, but it is impossible to paint a large canvas efficiently without a spray bottle.

Procedure:

  1. After preliminary preparation of the glass, you need to install it on a flat surface in a horizontal position. Otherwise, the likelihood of leaks increases. Painting in a vertical position is used only in the case of a spray gun.
  2. Apply the paint in an even transition without streaks. It is recommended to do at least two layers with intermediate drying. Because The material is transparent; with a single layer of painting, unpainted paint will certainly appear.
  3. Wait until the fresh coat dries. After this, the glass can be fired or placed in a rack to dry completely.
