Gouache and PVA: how it works
Gouache is made from pigment dyes. They are mixed with white and glue and diluted with water. This substance is characterized by a fairly dense structure. A distinctive feature of the coating is its rich color. At the same time, it is characterized by resistance to abrasion.
Dried gouache helps make the surface matte and velvety. It fits easily into the picture. The advantage of paints is the ability to eliminate defects. This can be achieved by applying a new layer. In addition, it is possible to conduct quite bold experiments. To do this, it is recommended to mix the coating with white to obtain new tones.
To give gouache new properties, it can be combined with PVA glue. This substance is often used for painting and repair work. The combination with PVA glue helps to obtain a stronger and more durable coating. It becomes embossed and holds volume well.
At the same time, applying the dye in too thick a layer is prohibited. In this case, after drying, it will begin to crack and crumble. If the painting turns out to be not very attractive or is simply boring, you can easily wash it off the canvas or other blank. After this, you can apply the next drawing.
Work examples
The combination of gouache with PVA helps to obtain a fairly strong and durable coating. Thanks to this, the material is used to design different designs:
- The high strength of the material allows it to be applied to wood. Because of this, it is often used for painting boxes. If you add egg composition to the pigment, you can get tempera. Icons are painted with this substance.
- A composition of white gouache and PVA glue can be used to coat plasticine toys. After they dry, it is recommended to apply colored dyes to the workpieces.
- To obtain three-dimensional contours, it is permissible to add flour to the mixture of gouache and glue. Such borders will be very durable and easy to use.
- A combination of gouache and PVA glue can be used to paint glass surfaces. This technique can be used to decorate windows and doors. You can choose any patterns - it all depends on your imagination.
Advantages and disadvantages
The combination of gouache with PVA glue helps to obtain a new coating that has unique properties. The advantages of this type of material include the following:
- strength;
- long lasting result;
- relief volume;
- ability to hold volume;
- Possibility of application to different types of surfaces - this composition can be used to process wood, canvas, textiles, cardboard.

The main disadvantage of the coating remains the need to adhere to the dosage when mixing materials. This will help to obtain the desired consistency and make the coating uniform. It is recommended to apply the paintwork in thin layers. This should be done in several approaches. It is important to ensure that each of them is completely dry. If the technique of applying the mixture is not used, the layers will turn out to be too thick. In this case, they will crack and crumble.

What you will need
Making your own dye is quite easy. This will require desire and inspiration. In addition, it is recommended to prepare the following:
- palette or board for diluting dyes;
- canvas or other material required for drawing;
- PVA glue;
- a simple set of gouache - it can include 6-12 shades;
- a napkin to wipe the brushes;
- flat brushes.
How to mix: correct proportions
To mix dyes, it is recommended to put glue into the recess of the palette, and then mix it with gouache. It is important to strictly adhere to proportions. To get the required results, mix glue and dye in equal proportions. It is also permissible to do this in a 1:2 ratio. You can try different ratios to achieve the desired texture.
To get a new shade, it is recommended to mix the paints first. This is done until the desired tone appears. Only after this is it necessary to add glue to the mixture. This is due to the effect of a lighter shade before drying.
Drawing technology
When the adhesive-based paint is ready, it can be carefully applied to the surface. This must be done as carefully as possible. This will prevent the formation of leaks.
After completion, it is recommended to secure the finished work. For this, it is permissible to use varnish. You can also apply an additional adhesive layer. It is important to take into account that it will no longer be possible to wash off the pattern from the surface.
Gouache mixed with PVA glue is considered an accessible material for creative activities that anyone can create. An indisputable advantage is the ability to apply the material to any type of surface.

Staining technique
The first step is to mix the gouache in PVA. In most cases, it is necessary to maintain 1:1 proportions (but in general it is recommended to experiment with glue and paintwork).
If you need to combine tones, you should first mix the desired color and just add glue to the consistency.
The sequence is exactly this due to the fact that after complete drying the color, as a rule, becomes one (and sometimes several) shades lighter.
After the glue-based dye is ready, you need to carefully apply it to the surface with a brush and make sure that no smudges form.
Upon completion, it is recommended to fix the finished work with varnish or an additional layer of glue.
But you need to take into account that it will no longer be possible to wash off the image from the surface.
Gouache diluted with PVA glue is an affordable material for painting that anyone can make with their own hands.
In addition, this adhesive paint is suitable for working with any type of substrate.

Important subtleties
To get the desired effect, it is worth considering important nuances:
- It is recommended to draw on tinted textured paper. In this case, it will be possible to leave unpainted areas.
- As the coating dries, it becomes lighter in color. It is recommended to take this into account during operation. In addition, the material can fade greatly when exposed to ultraviolet radiation.
- If you use too much water, you risk creating unattractive streaks. It is recommended to blur them to a translucent consistency or apply an opaque layer. It is advisable to do this in one pour, using dye of the same consistency.
- It is permissible to combine gouache with different materials. White tint is often used for highlights in watercolor works. It is also used for color correction. Velvety texture goes well with pencils. Sometimes it is permissible to combine it with pastel.
- If you apply gouache in an overly thick layer, it may crack. Also sometimes the material falls off.
- When drawing on the spread of a sketchbook, there is a risk of contamination of adjacent pages.
