Characteristics of “moment joiner” adhesives and instructions for use

Gluing wood can be quite difficult; it is necessary to use high-quality compounds that can penetrate deep into the wooden structure. Glue Moment Joiner is one of these products, and is distinguished by a number of positive properties that make it popular among craftsmen and ordinary buyers. To get a high-quality result, you need to understand the intricacies of its use. Glue can be used for other purposes. The features of this type of glue will be discussed in detail below.

Instructions and operating rules

Before gluing the parts, you need to properly prepare both bases.
To do this, the surfaces are cleaned of dust and dirt, old paint is removed from them, and grease is removed by wiping with alcohol and acetone. The optimal moisture content of wood is 8-10%, the limit of this indicator is 18%. At a humidity of 12-14% you need to be prepared for an increase in the setting time of the glue. It is advisable that the room temperature be about 20 degrees. The procedure for working with glue is as follows:

  1. Cut the tip of the tube nozzle to a size corresponding to the width of the required seam. If you purchased “Moment” in a jar or bucket, open the packaging.
  2. Make sure the adhesive and materials being joined are at room temperature. It is better if they are heated to +23...+25 degrees.
  3. Apply a thin layer of the product with a brush, roller or rubber spatula. To achieve better adhesion, both surfaces should be treated with glue.
  4. Fix the products for 10-15 minutes for the glue to set. If the moisture content of the wood is high, this time must be increased. Vices and heavy objects can be used as clamps. It is best to leave the products in this position for a day - this is how long the adhesive seam needs until it is ready for use.
  5. Remains of glue that extend beyond the seam must be removed mechanically (for example, wiped off with a damp cloth).

You need to be careful when working with Instant Grip glue. The parts should be folded correctly right away, because they will set almost immediately. For all adhesives from the Moment Joiner line, it is the high-quality initial fixation that is important, so immediately after applying the product the strongest pressure is ensured.

Advantages and disadvantages

Universal glue Moment based on PVA is one of the most popular products on the market.

It has earned its popularity thanks to numerous positive characteristics:

  • Resistance to water and moisture - allows glued objects and materials to be used even in high humidity.
  • Optimal heat resistance allows the glue to retain its properties even when the temperature rises to +70 degrees. This property will be useful when working with veneer, since installation of this material requires pre-heating.
  • Good adhesion in the shortest possible time allows you to very quickly create a strong and reliable adhesive seam. Glue Moment belongs to the express category, which allows you to save time on repair, installation or restoration of objects.
  • The period during which the joint seam dries completely is within 15 minutes.
  • Provides strength and long service life of the connection. Even under the influence of external or extraneous factors, reliable adhesion of surfaces glued with Moment glue will not be disrupted throughout the service life specified by the manufacturer.

But the Moment Joiner glue also has several disadvantages. The main one is the practically lack of frost resistance of the composition. Also, during operation, special requirements are placed on wood, or more precisely on its moisture content. It should not exceed 18%.

Valuable advice

When purchasing PVA glue for wood, it is worth considering important nuances in order to spend money on a truly effective gluing component.

The following points are worthy of attention:

  • to permanently connect parts, it is better to choose a synthetic adhesive composition, but for elements that will be disassembled in the future, it is worth purchasing casein or bone glue;
  • light wood is demanding on adhesives and for it it is necessary to select a product that can adapt to the color of the surface so that after drying there is no very visible dark seam between the parts;
  • the adhesive mass should not be too thick or liquid, as this may indicate its overcooling and, as a result, loss of properties.

Craftsmen often ask the question: how long does it take PVA glue to dry on wood? This is really important to know, because otherwise the result of connecting the parts may be disappointing. The packages of adhesive mixtures indicate different drying times, but you should not believe this in all cases.

This period will definitely be enough for the composition to fully set and the parts will not separate either on their own or under force.

Work technology

Along with information about the best quality products, it is also worth knowing how to glue wood with PVA glue.

Regardless of the variety, the manufacturer of the sticky mass should follow two important rules:

  1. Before working with glue, wooden parts must be assembled in test mode to ensure that all elements are present and correspond to each other.
  2. Before distributing the composition over the surface, it should be cleaned and dried.

There are situations when parts cannot be pressed together with the required pressure. In this case, they should be connected and fixed with clamps, and the wooden elements should be removed only after the adhesive mass has completely dried.

Peculiarities

To begin with, it is worth mentioning that “Moment Joiner” is not just glue, but a whole series of products that will definitely come in handy during repairs, assembly or repair of furniture. All products in this series are excellent for both external and internal work. At the same time, according to manufacturers, the glue is suitable for both household and professional use.

Among the features and advantages of this product, it is worth noting not only its versatility, but also its reliability. The glue hardens very quickly. For example, at room temperature, only ten minutes is enough for the product to set and the damage to be repaired. It is worth noting that at higher temperatures the product sets even faster.

The main feature of this glue is that it is heat resistant, water resistant and high strength. After the glue is completed, it will not be visible at all, since after drying it becomes transparent.

From the history

The appearance of the “Moment” glue, known to everyone in our country, began back in 1979. opened a plant in Tosno, which is located in the Leningrad region. Over time, high-quality and easy-to-use adhesive solutions called “Moment” have become one of the most popular household products on the construction market.

More than one hundred types of products under this name are produced. You can find a suitable option for any purpose.

ULTIMA JOINER PVA

The unique PVA adhesive Stolyar from Ultima has fairly high performance properties. It is actively used in the printing and woodworking industries.

The glue is famous for its maximum seam strength, due to which it can successfully glue parts that in the future will be subject to high loads - this mark is even on the packaging of the composition. In addition, among the positive aspects, it is necessary to highlight the setting speed, frost resistance and almost crystal transparency.

The adhesive mass does not lose its properties after four cycles of freezing to -35 degrees. This fact is indicated by the manufacturer and confirmed by many buyers, so it is really worth trusting it.

The only downside of the glue is that it takes a long time to dry. Despite the rapid setting after distributing the mixture and joining the parts, the master will in any case have to wait several hours to continue working with the glued elements.

Instructions for use

To prevent possible redness of the skin on your hands, we recommend using latex gloves. Otherwise, this glue is safe.

To understand how to properly glue with PVA glue, you need to firmly understand the following rules:

After mastering the above rules, the instructions are quite simple. The optimal temperature for gluing is 18-25°C. Please note that the parts themselves must have this temperature, and not just the air in the room. The surfaces to be bonded must be cleaned of all excess. This is best done with fine sandpaper. Moreover, the use of sandpaper will increase the surface roughness, which leads to an increase in the contact area and thereby improve cohesion.

The cleaned and sanded surface must be wiped with a highly volatile solvent. In addition to degreasing, this procedure will remove dust. The presence of dust sharply reduces the adhesion of glue to the part.

The PVA dispersion is applied in a thin layer to both surfaces and left for 6-8 minutes. During this time, on each part, the glue penetrates into the thickness of the material by several microns and begins the polymerization process. Then the surfaces to be glued are pressed against each other and securely fixed

Only after this time does the adhesive joint acquire the declared characteristics.

Of course, if you glue cardboard, you don’t have to wait that long. But when working with furniture, compliance with the exposure period is extremely desirable. When gluing wood, carefully following the instructions leads to a paradoxical effect - the adhesive seam of PVA glue is super, it becomes stronger than the product itself. In other words, if the load is exceeded, the wood itself will break, and not the glue seam!

It is best to remove excess glue immediately after application. This can be done with a damp cloth. After drying and complete polymerization, only scraping with a knife or sandpaper is possible. The action of household solvents causes swelling of the polymer film and does not lead to dissolution.

Packaging and storage

Adhesives are available in a variety of containers. In everyday life, the most popular are 125 g tubes, as well as 250 g jars. Small packages are equipped with caps, making them more convenient to work with (you can screw the product tightly at any time). Typically, this glue is used to create crafts, carry out minor repairs to furniture and interior items, and for gluing corners of wallpaper.

There are also 750 g jars on sale. They are used for repair work, and are often added to wallpaper glue to enhance adhesion (to hold heavy canvases). Professionals usually choose 3 kg buckets, while furniture factories usually choose 30 kg buckets. Packages of 3 kg have a sealed lid, like larger containers, although under production conditions it is not necessary to store the glue for a long time. Instant Grip glue is available in additional 100g and 200g packs as it is often used for small jobs that require a quick and reliable bond.

The product should be stored at +5...+30 degrees in the original packaging, tightly twisted and closed. It must be protected from high humidity and direct sunlight. Despite its moderate frost resistance, it is better not to freeze the glue unless absolutely necessary. Otherwise, the frozen product should be brought into a room at room temperature and allowed to melt naturally. When used correctly, Moment adhesives from the Joiner series will become reliable assistants on construction sites and in repairs.

Just ten seconds and the job is done. The adhesive is perfect for both interior and exterior use. It is easy and convenient to apply and leaves no traces after drying.

Area of use

This is a universal PVA that works great on a variety of wood surfaces. Compared to simple PVA, it is not a white, but a brown substance; they are almost the same in consistency. There are colorless Moments that are used for light surfaces.

This glue is used for surfaces made of wood of different species and types (veneer, boards, timber, laminate, chipboard).

If we talk about wood species, you can use any type of wood for this glue.

There are also other materials with which this glue does an excellent job: fabric, certain plastics, cardboard, leather, paper, felt, foam rubber.

Since the glue hardens quickly, is not afraid of high temperatures, and is universal, it is often used to solve everyday problems, when creating furniture, when repairing it, and for fixing fittings.

How to prepare the mixture

To prepare the working material, take ready-made grain, dry powders, tiles, granules. They are thoroughly crushed and diluted with warm water according to the instructions. Wait for the active components to swell. Then they use it. Store in a hermetically sealed container. All formulations, except casein, retain adhesive properties for several days.

The cooking method is described in the instructions on the package.

. Mixtures from different manufacturers may differ in composition. Consistency matters. The description of the specific glue indicates the required amount of water. It is designed to produce a mixture of a certain viscosity. If a more liquid material is needed for work, the liquid is added in small portions, and the paste is thoroughly mixed each time.

Purpose

As for the purpose of this or that product from the Moment Joiner series, it is important to mention that some of them are suitable not only for working with wood. For example, a product marked “Express” copes well with gluing paper, thick cardboard and even straw

If you have such glue in the house, then you can safely use it to create a variety of crafts with children.

Glue marked “D3” is also suitable for crafts and working with paper. In addition, this product is excellent for making doors or windows. And also in the production of various furniture for the bathroom or kitchen, since it is highly water resistant.

Since many adhesives from the Moment Joiner series are considered universal, there is a product that is suitable not only for working with wood, but also for working with metal and PVC. Bone

This composition for gluing wooden parts is sold dry in the form of yellow or brown granules. The product can also be found in the form of pressed slabs. It is brought to readiness at home according to the following algorithm:

  1. Soak the powder for 4-12 hours. Time is calculated depending on the quantity used. Water should only be used that has been boiled and cooled to room temperature. Pour in so that the entire mass is covered with liquid.
  2. After the consistency of the base has become gelatinous and soft, it is boiled in a water bath for at least 15 minutes at a temperature of 60-80 ° C, without bringing to a boil. As soon as a thin film appears on the surface, the glue is ready. You can also determine readiness using a wooden stick. It must be dipped into the composition, then taken out and evaluated the result. Readiness is indicated by the glue flowing down in a continuous stream.

The composition of bone glue can be supplemented independently, which will allow it to be used for gluing parts made of other materials and significantly improve its qualities:

  • Borax, ammonia, phenol. They will protect against the appearance of mold and mildew, which makes it possible to use this composition for gluing parts used in conditions of high humidity.
  • Wood ash + chalk. Improves putty properties.
  • Glycerin (2 tsp per 1 liter of glue). Suitable for working with leather.
  • Drying oil + linseed oil (40 granules per 10g). Provides moisture resistance to the seam.

Bone glue is needed for gluing wooden parts and various other materials except metal. It is characterized by high strength and resistance to mechanical stress.

Mezdrovy

Made from tanning waste. The scope of application of this glue is quite wide. It is used in various industrial fields:

  • printing houses;
  • printing;
  • metallurgy;
  • in the manufacture of furniture;
  • woodworking and many others.

This type of glue can be used at home, just like bone glue.

Fishy

It is one of the best quality compounds, as it is capable of permanently gluing parts made of any material. It is produced by fish waste:

  • fish entrails;
  • scales;
  • heads;
  • fins.

On the construction market you can purchase both ready-made glue and a base for making it yourself.

It is prepared according to the following algorithm:

  1. Paint the slabs to the state of small granules and fill them with cold water.
  2. Leave until swelling for at least 5-6 hours.
  3. Rub with hands until a homogeneous mass is obtained.
  4. Boil in a water bath at a temperature of 80°C, without bringing to a boil. To prevent lumps from forming, the glue must be stirred constantly during cooking.
  5. Before cooking, add an antiseptic.
  6. Filtered.
  7. Pour into a container in which cellophane is previously placed to avoid gluing it to the walls.

Application

Wood glue comes in convenient packages and is great for wood and more. Detailed instructions are on each package, so even a non-professional can carry out minor repairs at home using this product.

Before starting work, you should definitely prepare the surface and those parts that will be used for repairs. All parts that are planned to be glued together must be clean.

If you plan to work with wood, it is important to remember that the humidity of the parts should not exceed twelve percent, otherwise the gluing process may take a longer time. It is not recommended to carry out work at low temperatures

The temperature should be at least plus ten degrees. The ideal temperature for such work is plus twenty degrees.

When gluing the parts, it is important to firmly fix them to each other for at least fifteen minutes. Construction professionals in this case use special vices

If there is nothing like this in the house, then it is quite possible to make do with improvised means. The glued parts can be weighed down with something heavy, for example, a tied stack of books, a bucket filled with water, and so on. The main thing is that the heavy object does not move, otherwise the parts will not be glued to each other correctly.

Typically, glue is available in convenient packaging in the form of tubes. This is very convenient if you need to apply a thin layer of glue. Cut the cap so that you can then carefully apply a seam of the desired thickness. To even out the layer of glue over a large surface, you can use a brush or roller.

How to fix glued surfaces

If the area of the surfaces to be glued is small, for example, these are some small parts or structural elements, then you can fix them manually. Fixation time for any materials is 15-20 minutes. During this time, the glue has time to harden. Therefore, during this time it is necessary to ensure optimal pressure.

If the surface area of the materials is significant, then you can use clamps or a vice, as professionals do. If such tools are not available, you can use any available items - books, buckets of sand or water, flower pots, weights, dumbbells and any other options.

Varieties

In the modern market of household chemicals, the range of wood glues is represented by five series, differing in composition, conditions of use, time of initial setting and complete hardening.

“Moment Stolyar Glue-Express” is a universal moisture-resistant product produced on a water-dispersion basis and intended for gluing wood of different species, as well as fiberboard and particle boards, veneer products and plywood. Complete setting time ranges from 10 to 15 minutes and depends on the ambient temperature and humidity of the wood.

The adhesive has high moisture-resistant properties and does not contain solvent or toluene. The product is suitable for working with paper, cardboard and straw, which allows it to be used instead of office glue for crafts and applications. After applying the composition, the working surfaces must be pressed tightly against each other. This can be done using a vice. Products can also be weighed down with a book or other heavy object.

The product is available in tubes weighing 125 g, in cans of 250 and 750 g, as well as in large buckets of 3 and 30 kg. The glue should be stored in tightly closed containers in a temperature range from 5 to 30 degrees.

“Moment Joiner Super PVA” is the optimal solution for gluing wood of various species, laminate, chipboard and fiberboard. The glue is available in red cans, has a transparent structure and is practically invisible after drying. The moisture resistance of the material corresponds to class D2, which allows it to be used in dry and moderately damp rooms. The joinery compound is suitable for working with laminated paper plastics, straw, cardboard and paper, which allows you to do crafts together with children without fear of harmful effects. Complete setting of the solution occurs after 15-20 minutes.

“Moment Stolyar Super PVA D3 waterproof” is a universal mounting compound that can withstand repeated freezing and thawing, intended for gluing wood products and laminated surfaces. The water resistance limit is determined by the DIN-EN-204/D3 index, which indicates the high water-repellent properties of the material and allows the use of products repaired with its help in conditions of high humidity. The product has proven itself well in renovation work in kitchens, bathrooms, toilets, and also as an installation agent for gluing parquet and laminate flooring.

“Moment Joiner PVA universal” is a water-dispersion based adhesive suitable for gluing elements made from any type of wood, MDF, fiberboard and plywood. The product has a short full setting time, a transparent structure and does not leave colored or cloudy spots on the wood. The initial initial adhesion force is 30 kg per cm2, which characterizes the excellent adhesive properties of the product. The main condition is that the surfaces to be glued must be firmly fixed within 20 minutes. Water-dispersion-based adhesives contain a strictly defined amount of water, so it will not be possible to further dilute the product to increase the volume, otherwise the proportions will be disrupted and the mixture will lose its performance properties.

“Moment Joiner Instant Grip” is a universal moisture-resistant product made on an acrylic water-dispersion base, intended for any wood. The initial setting time is only 10 seconds, which classifies the composition as a second adhesive and requires careful use. The solution is easy to apply and leaves no residue. The product is excellent for gluing wood to metal, PVC to plastic, and can withstand up to five cycles of short-term freezing.

Advantages and disadvantages

Different substances have different benefits.

Thus, the resistance to moisture of Waterproof Glue is very good, it is not afraid of constant high humidity, but the Universal Compound does not have this advantage.

Many products tolerate high temperatures well, which is convenient if you have veneer that gets hot. The price of the glue is not high, it is applied thinly to the base, so the consumption of the substance is small.

Other advantages of the funds:

  1. Versatility - can be used for different materials.
  2. Not visible after drying, no need to deal with stains and streaks.
  3. Sets quickly.
  4. Eco-friendly, harmless.
  5. High grip.
  6. Speed of repair work.

The glue contains no substances that can damage the wood, and there are no synthetic additives. The glue joint lasts a very long time and does not deteriorate for many years.

There are also disadvantages.

It is important to check the moisture level of the material before working. If this figure is more than 18%, then it is better not to glue the parts: the adhesion and quality of the seam will be poor.

The temperature during work must be at least +10°, otherwise the seam will take a long time to dry. Among the disadvantages, it is worth mentioning the low resistance to moisture of the D2 class product; it is suitable for interior work where there is no contact with liquid.

Compound

The basis of wood glue, the main agent is animal protein.

Depending on the type of raw material, there are glues:

  • fleshy,
  • fishy,
  • bone,
  • casein,
  • polyvinyl acetate (PVA),
  • moisture resistant.

All types are used for carpentry work.

Mezdrovy

The main active ingredient is obtained by processing animal skin. Protein is the subcutaneous layer without fatty tissue. It contains oligopeptides. They contain cysteine, which forms bonding bridges for reliable connection of parts.

Hide wood glue is produced in the form:

  • powder,
  • tiles,
  • scales.

Isinglass

Fins, scales, and swim bladders are used to produce fish glue. The result is a solution suitable for gluing similar and dissimilar surfaces. The only drawback is the high price.

Glue is produced in the form of dry flakes and granules.

Bone

Made from the bone remains of animals. Contains:

  • collagen,
  • gelatin,
  • cysteine.

These substances are viscous and reliably glue the surfaces of wooden products. The price of the material is low. You should choose transparent compounds: they are better than unrefined, cloudy, with impurities

.

Casein

Includes:

  • casein,
  • kerosene,
  • copper sulfate,
  • sodium fluoride,
  • slaked lime.

Flaws:

  • Significant shrinkage in volume.
  • Change in color of bonded surfaces.
  • The prepared solution has a short shelf life of several hours.

Holds wood parts together well.

Product Description

The product “Moment Joiner” is made on the basis of PVA glue; it also contains dyes, additives, and plasticizers that affect the strength of the substance and increase its heat resistance. Moment Joiner glue has a characteristic shade that, after drying, resembles light wood. It is also available in various varieties, which differ from each other in the degree of water resistance. The D2 variety is not afraid of only short-term exposure to water. There is “Super D3” wood glue with a high degree of water resistance. The glue is produced in bottles of various volumes: 125, 250 ml and even jars reaching several kg.

Moment wood glue has gained popularity due to its high-quality fastening of wood and various objects made from this material. However, its scope is much wider.

It can be used to work with the following materials:

  • Accessories.
  • Rough fabric options.
  • Veneer.
  • Plastic.
  • Cardboard.
  • Foam rubber.

Express glue joiner has the following qualities:

  • Moisture resistance.
  • Heat resistance.
  • Shortened setting period.
  • Absence of substances that attract pests.
  • Suitable for working with different types of wood.
  • After hardening it is almost invisible.
  • Does not contain toxic impurities that harm the structure of the wood.

Peculiarities

The composition of "Stolyar" includes a polyvinyl acetate dispersion with the inclusion of special plasticizers and additives that improve the adhesive properties of the material and increase the reliability of the connection. In the manufacturing process of Moment glue, no toxic or poisonous substances are used, which makes the material environmentally friendly and allows it to be used in the repair of household items. The chemical safety of the product is confirmed by a quality certificate and certificates of conformity that meet strict European standards.

Thanks to special additives, the adhesive composition does not disturb the structure of wood fibers. Once dry it is invisible. The scope of application of the product is quite wide. The glue is successfully used when working with any type of natural wood, plywood, chipboard and fiberboard, cardboard, veneer and laminate.

It is allowed to work with the composition at temperatures above 10 degrees and relative humidity no more than 80%. When performing work at low temperatures, the glue may lose its high adhesive properties, and the gluing will turn out to be of poor quality. The average material consumption is about 150 grams per square meter of surface. The dried composition is compatible with all types of paint and varnish products, therefore, if necessary, the glued item can be painted or varnished.

Criterias of choice

Before buying wood glue, you need to decide for what purpose it will be used. There are selection criteria that you need to focus on:

  • Cooking method. Stamps with an organic composition are easy to prepare at home, but it takes a lot of time. But they are safe, since they practically do not contain toxic substances. Two-component adhesives can also be prepared independently, but precautions must be taken. The best option is a ready-made synthetic mixture.
  • Moisture resistant. Brand D1 has the lowest level of moisture resistance, D4 has the highest.
  • Environmental friendliness. In terms of safety for health and the environment, compositions made from natural ingredients are optimal.
  • Conditions of use and application. When choosing, it is important to consider the conditions under which the work will be carried out. Different brands have their own requirements for humidity and air temperature.
  • Tree species. The result will directly depend on the characteristics of the material and the features of its processing. You should be especially careful if work is carried out with different types of wood.
  • Purpose. There are 2 types of wood glues - narrow-profile and universal. The former are much more expensive, but they are also more effective. For work in which high joint strength is important, it is best to use them. Cheaper compounds, such as PVA, are also suitable for joining small parts.
