Wall decoration in the loft style is one of the most popular ways to decorate the interior, not only in loft and industrial, but also in other styles. The famous concrete and brick walls are a constant in a loft interior; without them, a loft would not exist. In other styles, rough decoration of the room is needed to create the effect of novelty. It appears unexpectedly and always refreshes an interior that is stylistically unprepared for such brutality. Therefore, the question of what materials are suitable for decorating walls in a loft style has not lost any relevance. On the contrary, with the advent of new materials and the trend for eclectic design has become sharper. Candellabra magazine tells what wall decoration in a loft style looks like and shows examples of projects for inspiration.

Loft style design rules

Color

Lofts are characterized not only by brick and concrete walls, but also painted, plastered and sheathed in metal or wood. Accordingly, the color palette in the loft is based on materials - red or white brick, gray concrete, wood and metal textures, black matte paint. Thus, the loft corresponds to earthy shades of terracotta, ocher, gray, black and white.

Finishing materials

Loft is extremely scrupulous about the choice of building materials. The accuracy of style reproduction depends on the correct finishing of the floor, walls and ceiling. Finishing materials should be harmoniously combined in color and texture, be resistant to damage and easy to clean. The finish should be careless, rough, worn out - with chips, scratches and cracks. After all, it is the bare brickwork and bare concrete that most fully reflect the character of the loft. He doesn't forgive props, so every scratch counts.

Painting

Paint is a universal material widely used in all styles. Loft is no exception. Painting allows you to create the most neutral coating, which is good both on its own and as a complement to brick, concrete, and wood.

Before painting, the surface does not even need to be prepared for a long time - unevenness and other imperfections will become the highlight of the industrial interior.

Suitable colors:

  • white;
  • black;
  • grey;
  • blue;
  • green;
  • brown.

At the same time, they do not use pure shades, but mixed and complex ones: anthracite, cobalt, emerald, umber, copper, bronze.

Advice! They paint not only smooth surfaces, but also brick, concrete and other surfaces.

Brick wall in loft style

The most predictable wall decoration in the loft style is terracotta brick. It is considered the main style-forming element of a loft, but it is also found in other interior styles: in Scandinavian, country, rustic and Provence, white brickwork is appropriate, red also happens, but less often. Brick walls willingly make friends with English classics, Mediterranean design and eclectic interiors.

An apartment with uneven brick walls is a great success when decorating an interior in a loft style. You can save money on decorative coatings. If necessary, the repair team will have to clean the brick from cement, dirt and salt stains using an acid-containing solution. Then rinse and coat with water-based varnish, sanding off any uneven surfaces. If desired, the wall can be painted or painted with graffiti. If you are unlucky with a brick wall due to the design features of the building, finishing materials will come to the rescue. It is better not to use building bricks for interior purposes: the volume of the room will decrease.

Decorative brick tiles are also not suitable. It is important to follow one important loft rule: any imitation must exactly repeat the original and in no way betray its ignoble origin. The facing tiles should not differ from building bricks, so they use clinker bricks, which are baked using the same technology as building bricks, but made thinner. Such cladding can easily withstand not only capital walls, but also interior walls. In the worst case scenario, plaster is used, but this is an extreme that the loft will reluctantly accept. All other materials - polystyrene foam veneers, brick-like plastic panels, printed wallpaper are unacceptable in the loft under any circumstances. They do not convey volume and texture, cheapen the interior and destroy the brutal magic of the loft.

Concrete wall in loft style

A truly industrial or loft interior involves natural untreated concrete, which, if desired, can be freed from under layers of wallpaper and plaster. The walls must first be prepared and protected from external influences. As in the case of brickwork, concrete is cleaned and impregnated with a hydrophobic compound or colorless varnish to prevent the appearance of fungus in the pores of the walls. If the surfaces of the walls are curved or have other defects, the concrete is restored using a special plaster, which, when dry, will completely merge with the main gray color and does not look like a patch.

Plaster walls in loft style

A concrete surface can be imitated using special decorative plaster, which has a rough texture and the cold gray color of concrete. You can also imitate a wall made of concrete slabs. To do this, fresh plaster is drawn into rectangles and traces of the installation elements are recreated.

Before applying plaster, the walls are prepared according to all the rules. First, they are leveled to eliminate large defects that a thin layer of plaster cannot cope with. Afterwards, the walls are cleaned and dusted and a primer is applied to improve the adhesion of the plaster solution to the wall. All areas that do not need plastering are isolated with masking tape - door jambs, window slopes, etc. And only after all these actions can plaster be applied.

The solution is applied in a thin layer of 1-3 mm with a metal trowel so that layers and joints are not visible. Then they go over the uncured plaster with a metal brush to artificially create grooves, pits and protrusions characteristic of concrete. And when the plaster begins to set, you need to go over it with a trowel again to compact the texture and create the effect of polished concrete. When the plaster has completely dried, a finishing coating is applied to it - a layer of wax or varnish. This will protect the plaster from moisture, highlight the texture and give it a slight gloss.

Concrete plaster can be made from various materials:

  • Decorative plaster
  • Cement mortar, which is the basis of concrete. The required texture and color can be achieved by mixing plaster on it. This is the cheapest way to decorate walls in a loft style. There is also a minus: simple cement-sand plaster quickly wears out, crumbles and cracks, so you can’t do without a finishing varnish. And then the cost of finishing will greatly increase to the cost of decorative plaster.
  • Microcement for plastering floors and walls, creating kitchen countertops and splashbacks. This is a very plastic material that sets quickly, is easy to apply, durable and wear-resistant like concrete, so it is used for both interior and exterior decoration. The coating is thin, from 1 to 3 mm. To increase strength, microcement is coated with epoxy varnish.
  • Tile adhesive based on cement, sand and strong adhesive polymers. This material has a drawback: the grain size of the tile adhesive is larger than that of decorative plaster and it feels rougher to the touch, so it will not be possible to achieve the effect of polished concrete.

Microcement and microconcrete "Reamix"

Proizvodstvennaya is a modern Russian manufacturer of microconcrete and microcement with its own factories (Moscow). The company's products are widely used in the repair industry.

"Reamix" is used to create wear-resistant antistatic interior coatings without seams. Moreover, microcement and microconcrete of this brand can be applied not only to walls, but also to ceilings and even floors. After hardening, the material becomes durable and wear-resistant, and can withstand fairly large mechanical loads.

Wooden decor for walls in loft style

The industrial style is also “friendly” with wooden coverings, but they need to be used in doses. Too much wood will take the interior into a chalet or country style. Although wood is a traditional material for a loft, it is important to maintain a balance between the more traditional ways of decorating walls for a loft and wood that is not so familiar to walls. Wood textures domesticate the loft, while more familiar brick and concrete add the necessary brutality. In addition to aesthetic value, panels made from solid natural wood have other advantages: they provide the necessary thermal barrier and sound insulation; behind them you can hide electrical equipment, curvature of walls and other defects. Although there is no need to hide them in the loft, this functionality can be useful for a “soft” loft. The following is used as wood decor:

  • barn boards
  • decorative panels
  • wooden sheathing
  • saw cuts and slabs

Tile

Since the loft style is gaining momentum and is a favorite trend among young people, manufacturers offer many options for its implementation. Ceramic tiles are no exception. For industrial design, tiles or porcelain tiles with a texture are suitable:

  • wood;
  • aged brick;
  • concrete;
  • metal;
  • plaster.

Choose a matte, antique texture. A too glossy white boar, for example, will stand out from the overall concept. On the contrary, imitation of chips and scratches on gloss will fit well.

It is permissible to use not only textures, but also drawings. The most suitable print will be geometric, but Moroccan patterns will also work.

Kitchens, bathrooms, technical rooms (like a boiler room) are decorated with ceramics.

Photo examples of the best wall designs in the loft style

A great way to beat up a concrete or brick shade is to cover it with transparent glass panels. This technique helps when decorating a kitchen apron in loft interiors. This is a fairly convenient way to maintain the loft style and at the same time simplify the care of the most contaminated areas. You can go even further and decorate the wall with panels of aged mirror, as in the project of this office:

Another option for unusual wall design in a loft style is the use of sheet metal or metal-look tiles. It is better if the metal is not smooth, but with raised protrusions. A wall sheathed in this way should be an accent wall. The remaining walls will have to be finished with more neutral materials. Otherwise, there is a risk of overloading the interior and leading it into a cold and uncomfortable industrial aesthetic. The reception is best suited for decorating rooms where owners spend the least time - for example, in bathrooms.

A softer approach to decorating walls in a loft style is to paint rough brick or concrete walls. Mostly black, gray or white paint is used. It is applied in a thin layer to preserve the texture of the walls with unevenness, so beloved by the loft. Paint always softens the brutality of the interior, making the loft more homely, so it is desirable that concrete or brick be laid behind the paint layer.

You can complement the loft-style walls with neon decor or illuminated electrical wiring. With their help you can kill two birds with one stone. Additionally, emphasize Loft-style open communications, which in most other styles they prefer to hide. And use technical lighting beautifully: diffused light can be used together with the main one or separately to create a chamber atmosphere.

And now the knight's move. The most daring, “delicious” and highly relevant technique to tame the rough decoration of walls in a loft style is to decorate them with moldings. Not everyone will understand this combination, which at first glance seems surreal: a loft has never been like this. But this is precisely the direction in which interior fashion is moving today: some styles will interfere with others in order to find the most “explosive” combinations.

Advice from the experts

Finishing concrete walls and partitions using Loft Style decorative plaster requires taking into account the characteristics of the material. You can create the effect of a natural texture using a dishwashing sponge, which is used to scrape out areas and trowels for smoothing.

To decorate a concrete wall, it is better to use dark gray tones. The play of light and shadow can be ensured by painting in different shades. To get the right color, it is better to use paint tinting services in specialized stores.

Factors influencing the cost of work:

  • Height more than 3 meters: +10-20%.
  • Applying decorative plaster to the ceiling: + 50%
  • Transport accessibility of the object. Distance from the metro and train stations close to Moscow: 2-5 km + 5%; 10km +10%; 15km +15%; 20 km and more +20%. Taking into account the fact that our company dumps by 20% of market prices. You get a price either cheaper than the Moscow market average, or the same.
  • Linear meters - bottlenecks less than 30 cm (ends, slopes) are calculated at a price per m2 or with a reduction factor of 0.6 or 0.8, depending on the type of coating applied and the total number of linear meters. In coatings applied by brush, linear meters, as a rule, are not taken into account.
  • The minimum cost of work in Moscow is from 20 thousand rubles, depending on the complexity of the application and the need for repeated visits to the site.
