Properties and application of silicone-based food sealing compounds

Silicone materials are always in demand in the household. Particular attention is paid to areas where food contact areas are sealed. For such purposes, food-grade heat-resistant silicone sealant is used. It does not contain substances hazardous to the body and provides adhesion to most surfaces.

Properties and technical characteristics of food sealant

In appearance, food-grade silicone sealant resembles a colorless transparent or white matte paste, which is easily squeezed out of the tube and hardens after contact with moisture from the air at different time intervals (depending on the brand and composition). The main difference between the material and other silicone sealants is its safety for health, the absence of harmful impurities and the release of toxic substances from high temperatures. It is these properties that make the product suitable for dishes, food equipment, ovens, and household appliances.

Most often, these sealants are used for the following purposes:

  • filling seams in water containers, filter devices, tanks;
  • strengthening joints and gaps at facilities in the food industry, dairy farms, slaughterhouses, catering establishments;
  • sealing pipeline seams for supplying warm and cold water in the city and rural areas;
  • sealing of various surfaces in institutions where sterility is required (operating rooms, other hospital premises);
  • repair of home and professional household appliances: gas and electric stoves, electric kettles, multicookers, moonshine stills, etc.

The sealant can be applied without dripping or shifting on any base: horizontal, vertical. After polymerization, the seam turns into durable silicone rubber, which is food-safe and can come into contact with water and food. The sealant must have an o on the packaging, which confirms its non-toxicity.

Most food grade sealants are high temperature (heat resistant), which means they can be used to repair hot items without risk of deterioration or seam failure. Sealants are waterproof and have an excellent level of adhesion to glass, ceramics, metal, hard plastic, enameled and painted materials. The seam created by the sealant does not react to the influence of alcohols, cleaning agents, fats and oils. It is elastic and does not crack from freezing.

The technical characteristics of high-quality silicone sealants are as follows:

  • high mechanical resistance, the ability to stretch when cracks form on the main product;
  • significant chemical resistance, the ability to withstand the influence of weak acids and alkalis;
  • wear resistance, immunity to atmospheric factors;
  • the ability to quickly form a protective film (after about 10 minutes) and rapid final drying (from 2 hours to a day);
  • tolerance to temperature changes from -40 to +180-350 degrees or more.

The most popular brands of food sealants are Tytan “Food-safe silicone sealant”, Gebsicone Mastic silicone, Master Sil and others.

PVA will not help - it is water soluble.

Regarding the toxicity of silicate glue - it is not just low, it is absent. Silicate glue is a 10-15% solution of sodium silicate, Na2SiO3.

The glue sets due to its interaction with carbon dioxide from the air: Na2SiO3 + CO2 -> SiO2 + Na2CO3 That is, everything turns into soda and silicon oxide, which is the main component of glass, and is also actively consumed from food poisoning under the name “White Coal” and "Enterosgel".

I don’t know about ceramics, but glass (I glued a lampshade from a chandelier) glues liquid glass very well. Sold in building supplies and hardware stores!

Well, this is not food glue. ((

Special silicone glue for aquariums. Very good adhesion even to glass, non-toxic (fish are very sensitive to this), and is not afraid of large temperature changes. The main thing is to do everything without violating technology.

Just tell it like it is, that you have sifted through a bunch of information and options, that there is poison everywhere and that you will not raise your hand to do this, because it is fatally harmful to health. If a person is adequate and his health is dear to him, he understands, he will throw out this kettle himself. This is the one a situation in which it is better to do nothing. IMHO.

I went to Verbilki today and bought a new apple tea set (red). Oh very beautiful. For 6 persons. It's a pity my pictures are not attached. This is a replica of a Soviet set. There is nothing to take from the new “creativity” - it’s vulgar. The new owner lowered the plant with the famous moose head. But the daughter-in-law is stubborn. I really don't know. This is my taste.

You did the right thing, if you glued it together you would be happy, but you can’t deceive yourself, then there is only torment, health is at stake, if only this teapot was on the shelf, then you can put this nose down on the snot. Something doesn’t last forever under the sun, it’s strange that she loves him so much, it’s okay, everything will be normal
