Frost-resistant varnish for wood: a guide on how to choose acrylic façade quick-drying varnish for wood for exterior use

Wood should not be left without proper protection. Especially when it comes to wooden products that are located outside. It is painted, protected with special impregnations and varnished. This not only protects the wood, but also emphasizes its structure, making the surface more beautiful and presentable. I would like to pay special attention to wood varnish for outdoor use. It perfectly protects the product from ultraviolet radiation, pests and high humidity. But in order for wood varnish to fully perform its functions, you need to pay attention to its choice.

Next, we will look at what types of varnishes for wood used for exterior use exist, what requirements they must meet, and which varnish is best for wood? Thanks to this information, you can choose the right composition and carry out work on its application.

Differences between frost-resistant varnish

Varnishes and paints for external wood finishing protect and decorate wood. Wood finishing materials undergo numerous tests; these products are in no way harmful to human health or the environment.

For northern countries, a pressing problem is low temperatures, which require homeowners to use special frost-resistant varnish.

On the modern paint and varnish market, you can easily find a full range of water- and solvent-based varnishes and paints that protect wood, including modern finishing coatings, including opaque ones.

Let's sum it up

You cannot use regular varnishes on outdoor products. And from this article we learned why. It is not for nothing that special compounds were created for this purpose. They have excellent characteristics and can serve in negative conditions. All that remains is to decide on the type of paintwork and buy it. And thanks to a video about each type of coating, you can easily do it yourself.

Frost-resistant varnish for wood

Wooden joinery adds elegance, warmth and privacy to a home. However, they will require periodic cleaning.

Experts from leading European paint and varnish manufacturer Euro-Wood recommend the ADLER Pflegeset Plus maintenance kit, specially prepared for the long life of wooden exterior joinery.

  • ADLER Pflegeset Plus is a set for cleaning and maintaining wood joinery treated with water-based products. The kit contains ADLER Top-Cleaner, ADLER Top-Finish Exterior Finish and a cleaning cloth along with a sponge brush for application.
  • The degreaser has an increased ability to dissolve dirt, so clean the window of excess dirt with warm water, then wipe with a cloth coated with ADLER Top-Cleaner. ADLER Top-Finish has the ability to close small cracks and pores in the varnish film, thereby preserving the aesthetic appearance of the product.

Cleaning is carried out on the entire surface of the elements, previously degreased with ADLER Top-Cleaner. For application, use the ADLER Pflegeset Plus maintenance kit.

High air humidity and low temperatures can prolong drying time. After using a cleaning cloth and an application brush, the surface can be easily cleaned with hot water.

What colors are there?

Colorless wood varnish does not change the natural wood tone, but only emphasizes the texture and makes the growth rings more noticeable.

Colored wood varnishes, on the contrary, make the shade more saturated and bright. Often they imitate the tones of other species, allowing you to make inexpensive pine richer in appearance.

There is a black wood varnish that imitates wenge.

Varnish for wooden doors

Entrance doors represent the image of the home, and if they are made of wood, they must be properly secured.

The complete finishing system for wooden entrance doors consists of three stages:

  • Tig HighRes, a water-based wood stain with very good coverage for tooth-jointed softwood surfaces; with excellent drainage properties for both hard and soft wood. Water-based impregnation contains substances that stabilize lignin and also acts as an ultraviolet filter.
  • Protor Primo, a solvent-based sealer that hardens wood substrates to create a hydrophobic-looking surface. Impregnation isolates wood extracts and protects the wood from blackening, as well as fungi that destroy the structure of the wood. Solvent-based impregnation contains the highest quality pigments with a high degree of transparency, especially recommended for hardwoods such as oak.
  • Aquawood Protor-Base L NG, clear primer or Protor Base D NG, white primer, selected according to the desired final appearance, varnished or painted, spray applied in 1-2 coats. The primer is two-component, water-soluble, with excellent resistance to ultraviolet radiation, low temperatures and other atmospheric influences. Protor Base Primer also acts as a sealant for water soluble wood materials.

Transparent varnish Protor Finish L NG or its opaque analogue Protor Finish D NG, available in any RAL or NCS shade, is two-component, water-soluble, with excellent resistance to sunlight and other weather conditions.

Varnish for external entrance doors is characterized by low sensitivity to scratches, blocking effects and chemicals. Wood varnish also has very good resistance to yellowing and discoloration.

Where is it used?

A good waterproof wood varnish is used to process:

  • terraces;
  • balconies and loggias;
  • gazebos;
  • verandas;
  • roofs

There are special classes of varnish for baths and saunas. They contain an increased concentration of acrylic, which contributes to the hermetically sealed wood.

Varnishes and paints for garden furniture

Wooden surfaces used in the production of garden or urban furniture, wooden building facades, wooden houses, fences or other structures exposed to weather conditions require effective protection from weather extremes.

The use of Lignovit products allows you to protect them from various types of unwanted influences.

Lignovit varnishes

The Lignovit product family includes sophisticated finishing systems covering the entire color range, namely:

  • Lignovit IG Protect, wood primer and Lignovit Protect Finish, special transparent stain. The natural finishing system is characterized by ideal transparency and an ultraviolet filter, which does not allow the wood to turn yellow and maintain its natural appearance for a long time;
  • Lignovit Lazur, a translucent glaze for wooden elements exposed to weather conditions; a universal product with a wide range of colors, ideal for softwood and beyond, with very good weather resistance, easy to apply, very easy to maintain over time, provides long-lasting protection for the wood, being resistant to the effects of fading;
  • Lignovit Color STQ, an opaque stain, available in the entire RAL or NCS color range, is an ideal product for surfaces exposed to ultraviolet radiation, such as balconies or wooden shutters. It can also be successfully applied to hives without harming their health. Exterior wood wax is an extraordinary product that retains its appearance and optical properties for a long time;
  • Lignovit Platinum, an opaque metallic effect solution with special optical characteristics, provides exceptional wood protection, maximum UV resistance, is easy to use and maintain, ideal for modern building facades and much more.

All products in the Lignovit range can be applied by dip, flow, brush or impregnation machines. It is recommended not to use products from the Lignovit line for wooden elements that are constantly in contact with the ground and/or water.

Consumption per 1m2

The consumption of terrace and yacht varnish on wood per 1m2 depends on:

  1. Wood porosity. On average, beech and cork absorb more varnish than oak, ash or pine.
  2. Viscosity The higher the acrylic concentration, the higher the viscosity. Liquid varnish is better absorbed into the wood, but spreads more easily. Thick compositions, on the contrary, remain on the surface, and their consumption is less.
  3. Grinding. Polished wood almost does not absorb the composition.
  4. Method of application. The most economical method is a spray gun, leaving a thin, uniform layer. A little fatter - a spray can. The brush and roller use up even more varnish.

On average, the consumption rate of wood varnish = 1 liter per 5-8 m2 in one layer.

Plastering technology for creating decorative surfaces

There are a huge variety of styles of material application. There are complex techniques where working alone is simply unacceptable.

Complex Travertino technique

Let's talk about the most common technologies:

  • "fur coat";
  • "bark beetle";
  • "mosaic".

They will certainly decorate the facade of your home and make it unique.

"Fur coat"

“Fur coat” is a variant of interior and exterior wall decoration with a rough surface. To do this, you do not need to look for specialized material; the effect is achieved through a unique application.

Options for applying a “fur coat”

Covering the wall is not difficult, so this option is great for DIY application. The layer turns out dense and thick, it serves as additional sound insulation for the house. For the “fur coat”, they often use not ready-made solutions, but self-made ones based on cement and sand.

Let's talk about four options for applying such a decorative layer:

  • Using a roller with holes or made of fur. For this, a liquid solution is used. If it seems thick, it is diluted with water or another product. The mixture is applied to the wall with a spatula, and then it is rolled out over the surface using a roller.
  • Using a spatula, apply the mixture to the wall, smooth it out, and then use a trowel to create a texture. This method is the simplest and can be used by beginners. To create the design, apply a trowel to the wall while the plaster is wet, and then quickly remove it. You will get a “fur coat”.
  • You can also create a pattern using a special sprinkler. It is very convenient to work using mechanical means.
  • The last option is to imitate the design using a broom. A new one is sprayed onto the applied thin smooth layer by sharp swings of a broom, previously lowered into a bucket of solution.

"Bark beetle"

Perhaps the most popular type of solution application. Externally, the surface resembles wood eaten away by beetles, hence the name.

Surface "bark beetle"

For such work, specialized ready-made solutions, as well as dry mixtures, are offered. First, a smooth layer of plaster is applied. As soon as it starts to dry out and stops shining, start rubbing it with a trowel. The design options “rain”, “lamb”, “carpet” depend on how the hand movements are made (horizontally, vertically, diagonally, in a circle).

Mosaic

This option looks very impressive, and came to us from antiquity. The material contains marble, malachite, lapis lazuli chips, fractions up to 3 mm in size.

"Mosaic" option

The application technique is simple: using a grater, the mixture is pulled from one corner to another without drying out. You need to work quickly so that the joints are not visible.

Useful tips

  1. Self-adhesive film is used to protect windows from splashes. You need to remove it after application, without waiting for the paint to dry.
  2. Paint stains from windows can be removed with a dry cloth previously moistened with white spirit. Traces need to be removed after the paint has partially dried - the main thing is not to let the paint harden, but there is no need to remove fresh paint either, since it will begin to smudge.
  3. The quality of painting also depends on the choice of a good brush. To paint small details, use a pointed brush.

Painting work is not recommended to be carried out under the scorching sun

If painting a plank surface, take breaks only after finishing painting the last board. It’s better to paint everything in one go. Before finishing, it is advisable to smear the edges with weak strokes of a dry brush. When applying paint to elements of windows and doors, the problem arises that the paint will stick together. You can avoid this by painting early in the morning so that by evening the surface is dry and you can start using the doors and windows. It is advisable to lubricate the hinges with Vaseline - this will prevent difficulties with opening the next day. To prevent sand particles from the walls from getting into the paint container, pour the required amount into a separate container.

It’s unlikely that I need to tell you how to apply varnish to wooden surfaces. Be it a façade board or parquet on the floor in a room.

The process is divided into several stages:

  • Preparation
    . You need to clean the wood, use wood putty somewhere, sand it, etc.;
  • Applying primer
    . This is also an important stage, which for some reason many people forget about. The primer reduces the porosity of the material, improves adhesion and reduces the consumption of the finishing coating;
  • Varnish treatment
    . Here you can use brushes, a roller or a spray gun. If you use brushes, I recommend using brushes with artificial bristles. It gives smoother and more even coverage than natural bristle brushes. Rollers are more suitable for large areas. And the remote controls apply an even layer even in hard-to-reach places.

The varnish is applied in several layers. Moreover, after the first layer, it is recommended to let the coating dry and sand it with fine-grain sandpaper.
