Paint BT-177: characteristics, features and reviews

Description of coverage

BT-177 paint is a mixture of BT-577 varnish and aluminum powder. The components are combined in a ratio of 85% to 15%, due to which the suspension is quite fluid and can be applied to surfaces using a sprayer.

The main purpose of this composition is to protect metal structures from the negative effects of the environment. Such surfaces are highly susceptible to corrosion, so they require additional care when used outdoors. BT-177 enamel is characterized by excellent adhesive properties, so it is ideal for this purpose.

After drying, the composition forms a dense, elastic protective layer that can withstand temperatures up to 200 degrees. The painted surface acquires a uniform silver color. It is completely free of sagging, bubbles and other defects. The use of this coating can significantly reduce the negative impact of aggressive environments on products made of various types of metal.

BT-177 paint is a suspension of aluminum powder (powder) in bitumen varnish BT-577. It is popularly known as “silver”, which is determined by the appearance of the paint and varnish material. Bituminous paint BT-177 is widely used for painting the surfaces of various metals in order to give them decorative properties and resistance to corrosion, in particular, atmospheric (in the open air), as well as resistance to the static effects of weak solutions of salts and water. Silver can also be applied to wood, concrete and some other types of surfaces.

You can buy BT-177 (silver) paint at a wholesale price in original packaging, capacity - 25 kg. Price for BT-177 golden – check.

The composition of silver paint BT-177 includes aluminum powder of the PAP-1 or PAP-2 brand. The difference between these brands of aluminum powder is only in the size of the aluminum particles - PAP-2 is more finely dispersed. The mass fraction of non-volatile components is about 40%. Viscosity may vary depending on the amount of solvent used, but the optimal values are around 18-35 s according to VZ-4.

Often the paint is prepared immediately before it is used. To do this, 15-20% aluminum powder is mixed in 80-85% semi-finished bitumen varnish BT-577. On sale there is already a mixed composition, which you just need to shake, or varnish and powder separately. They must be mixed very well before use. In order for the paint layer to remain intact for a long time and not peel off from the base metal, it is necessary to carry out high-quality surface preparation before applying a protective coating. To do this, it must be cleaned of various types of contaminants (dirt, rust residues, dust, oil stains, etc.), degreased, and only then begin painting with silver. Bituminous paint BT-177 can be applied to the protected surface using several methods: airless or pneumatic spraying, roller, brush, dipping, and in some cases, pouring. It is advisable to paint a surface previously treated with a primer, but this is not necessary. This paint and varnish material is applied in one or two layers at a relative air humidity of no more than 80% and a temperature from +5 to +35°C. In the case of two-layer application, bitumen paint BT-177 (silver) effectively protects the surface from atmospheric corrosion in moderate climatic conditions for at least 2.5 years.

If necessary, silver paint is diluted to the desired consistency using solvent, turpentine, white spirit or a mixture of these solvents in a 1:1 ratio. The consumption of BT-177 paint per layer largely depends on the qualifications of the painter, the method of applying paintwork materials, and surface preparation, but on average it is about 80-130 g/m2 with a layer thickness of 20-25 microns.

The paint and varnish material has good adhesion to metal surfaces.

Both hot and cold drying are used to harden the paint layer. Under natural conditions (i.e. at a temperature of 20°C), BT-177 paint dries to degree 3 within 16 hours. When hot drying (100-110°C and above, up to 200°C), the drying time is reduced to half an hour.

Appearance of the finished protective coating: uniform semi-gloss film of silver color, without craters, sagging, bubbles, wrinkles and other defects. The bending of the coating is no more than 1 mm. The hiding power of BT-177 paint is no more than 30 g/m2.

The appearance, namely, the color of the finished coating, greatly depends on the quality of the aluminum powder used and its floatability. There are powders that do not float to the surface of the film, but form a sediment. In this case, the paintwork will have a brownish tint (from light to dark). A similar effect is observed when there is too much bitumen varnish, then you just need to dilute the paint. During long-term storage of diluted silver powder, aluminum powder settles to the bottom of the container over time and is then quite difficult to stir. To prevent such situations, it is advisable to dilute the BT-177 paint immediately before use.

The guaranteed shelf life of bitumen varnish BT-577 is 0.5 years, and that of aluminum powder is 12 months. The shelf life of BT-177 paint is 0.5 years.

Serebryanka is manufactured according to GOST 5631-79.

Operating rules

The rules for mixing and applying BT-177 paint are indicated on the packaging. It is important to prepare the surface before starting work.

Surface preparation

Before painting, the surface must be cleaned of other enamels, rust and dirt using appropriate compounds or sandpaper. It is also recommended to treat the material from fat. After this, you should putty the surface, if necessary, and apply a layer of primer.

Dyeing technology

The solvent should be mixed with paint in a 1:1 ratio. In some cases, this ratio can be changed, thereby achieving the desired viscosity of silver. Solvent is considered the best solvent for BT-177 paint, but other compositions can be used.

Before application, check that the surface is dry. You can process the material with silver using a roller, brush or spray. The paint should be applied in 1-2 layers, waiting until the previous one dries. It is recommended to paint the surface at a humidity of no more than 80%. The temperature of the processed material must be above +15 degrees.

Drying

At room temperature, silverware completely hardens within 16 hours. After the specified period has expired, the treated material can be used for its intended purpose. Appropriate devices help speed up the drying of the enamel by heating the painted surface to +100 degrees.

It is necessary to act in this way for 30 minutes. Then you should wait at least three hours, after which you can use the painted product.

How to calculate consumption per 1 m2

Paint consumption depends on several factors, including the number of coats applied and the type of material being processed. On average, up to 110-130 grams of silver are consumed per square meter. The layer thickness is up to 25 micrometers.

Storage conditions

Storing finished products has some peculiarities. The manufacturer focuses the attention of buyers on the fact that the composition retains its original properties only during the first 6 months. This is not a very long period, so it is not worth purchasing enamel in large quantities.

All this time, paint containers should be kept indoors, away from ultraviolet rays and other negative environmental phenomena. The storage temperature of the composition in a closed container should be in the range from -40 to +40 degrees. If all conditions are met, BT-177 paint (or “silver”) retains its protective properties and can be used for its intended purpose.

Features of surface preparation for paint application

The instructions for working with this composition indicate that due attention must be paid to the preparation of the surface to be treated. This stage is very important, since the quality of the paint coating and the duration of its operation depend on it. It includes the following work:

  1. Cleaning the surface from dust, debris and other contaminants.
  2. Dismantling old paints, waterproofing materials and primers. These works can be performed using special liquids for removing old coatings. They significantly speed up the work.
  3. Removing rust. If there is already corrosion on the surface, then such areas must be thoroughly cleaned and sanded.
  4. Degreasing of metal. Before applying BT-177 paint, it is recommended to treat the surface with acetone-based solvents.

After completing the above work, you can begin applying enamel. To achieve the best result, metal structures can be coated with a primer, but this is not a requirement.

Application of the composition

Most often, BT-177 enamel ("silver") is sold in finished form, when all the components of the composition are already combined in one suspension. In this case, before starting work, you just need to mix the paint thoroughly. Coatings are often found in a semi-finished state: when silver powder and varnish are in different containers. Before applying the composition, they must be combined (in a ratio of 85% varnish to 15% powder) and mixed thoroughly until smooth.

The protective coating can be applied using the following methods:

  • airless spraying;
  • pneumatic spray;
  • by dipping the product into a solution;
  • using rollers and brushes.

Work should be carried out at temperatures from +5 to +35 degrees. Air humidity should not be more than 80%.

BT-177 paint is applied in one or two layers. If the surface has been previously primed, then a single treatment will be sufficient. Clean and even bases are painted twice. In this case, the guaranteed period of protection of the metal surface will be about 2.5 years.

Mode of application

Serebryanka is used in everyday life and in industry. Most often it is used for painting radiators and batteries, metal parts, pipes, and bridges.

BT-177 paint is applied only to previously cleaned surfaces. Preparation of the treated area includes the following steps:

  • dust removal;
  • removal of old paints and primers;
  • cleaning and polishing areas with corrosion;
  • degreasing – surface treatment with an acetone-based composition.

Stir the paint thoroughly before applying. Apply by brush, roller or airless spray (using a spray gun). If the silver has thickened, you can dilute it with white spirit, toluene or acetone. Painting work is carried out at air temperatures from +5 to +35, relative humidity – no more than 80%.

Time for complete drying is from 4 to 15 hours (the final time depends on the temperature). Silverfish dries both naturally and by hot drying. After drying, a dense protective layer of uniform silver color is formed. When the work is carried out correctly, the layer turns out to be mirror-like, elastic, the surface has a smooth structure, and there are no bubbles, sagging, wrinkles or any other defects.

Reviews about “serebryanka”

The composition we are considering has been used for quite a long time, so finding reviews about it is not difficult. Having studied the opinions of customers, we can conclude that this is a very affordable and reliable option for protecting metal products from atmospheric influences.

Many consumers prefer it due to its ease of use and widespread availability in the markets. But there are those who focus on the toxicity of solvents involved in the process of working with paint. Their use also increases the fire hazard of the composition, so processing must be carried out very carefully, using respirators, construction glasses and special clothing.

In general, BT-177 paint is a fairly simple and affordable product. Anyone can cope with its application, so questions about its relevance today do not even arise.
