Titebond glue for wood: characteristics, instructions

Some of the most popular adhesives on the modern Russian market are those manufactured under the Titebond brand. They have unsurpassed moisture resistance qualities and can have a transparent or creamy structure. For more than 70 years, the American company Franklin International has been supplying the world market with a wide range of adhesives that are designed for gluing different types of wood.

Active research activities have made it possible to introduce the most modern production technologies and produce high-quality wood adhesives that are intended for professional use. With their help, you can easily lay parquet boards in residential and office premises, restore old coatings that have failed, and carry out a fairly wide range of work.

Today in the assortment you can find more than 25 varieties of adhesives for industrial use, which have the Titebond brand. The most common among domestic consumers are one-component universal moisture-repellent wood adhesives, which must be worked with at positive temperatures. If you carry out the preparatory work correctly, thoroughly clean the surfaces of the products to be glued, and also keep them under pressure for a certain time, you will be able to achieve the promised positive result, obtaining a durable adhesive seam with moisture-repellent properties.

Characteristics of Titebond II Premium Wood Glue

Titebond glue, which you can distinguish by the designation II Premium Wood Glue, is sold in blue packaging and is a moisture-resistant composition that meets stringent American standards for water resistance. It is used for gluing hard and soft wood. In carpentry, you can make surface and butt joints, as well as glue paper film, laminate, veneer, chipboard, MDF, fiberboard and plywood.

This composition is used in furniture production, providing the most durable setting even with short pressing times. You will be able to obtain greater bonding strength, which is even higher compared to the wood itself.

Varieties

There are several types of Titebond adhesive compositions:

  • Original Wood Glue Titebond (red sticker). After drying it becomes hard and non-plastic. Designed specifically for repairing or making musical instruments and does not spoil the sound of the wood.

  • Titebond II Premium (with a blue sticker on the package) is moisture resistant and not sensitive to solvents, so they cannot be used to return the liquid consistency to hardened glue. Forms a more elastic seam compared to Original Wood Glue. The composition is perfect for repairing garden or street furniture, mailboxes, as it has a strong initial adhesion and quickly becomes hard. The result is a strong bond that can withstand indirect contact with food (for example, a cutting board). The adhesive meets the requirements of ASTM D-4235. Since it is very widely used, Titebond II Premium is packaged in a variety of containers, for example, in small bottles of 37 ml and in large containers up to one thousand liters.

  • Titebond III (green label on bottle) is a cream-colored, water-based bonding material used for bonding food contact surfaces. The composition is based on polymer, without solvents.

  • Titebond Heavy Duty is the strongest of the entire line presented; it can be used to glue brick, concrete, fiberglass, slate, ceramics, hardboard, and decorative stone. The main component is synthetic rubber. Heavy Duty is effective even when joining wet and frozen wood surfaces, creating a flexible joint that can withstand mechanical stress.

Additional features of Titebond Premium

Titebond II Premium adhesive is resistant to high temperatures, solvents and acoustic vibrations. This composition is a polyaliphatic emulsion with strong cross-links. Products after gluing can be used over a wide range of temperatures, which vary from -30 to +50 °C. After drying, the composition forms a film that has a transparent creamy tint.

Types and scope of application of glue

Titebond wood adhesives are high quality woodworking compounds for professional and home use. They have different bases depending on the specific purpose: artificial rubber, polyurethane, aliphatic resins. The products also contain polymers, protein compounds, water, various modifiers and plasticizers.

In total, there are 25 types of adhesives in the Tightbond line, but the most common on the domestic and European markets are universal one-component products with strong water-repellent properties. Their technical characteristics are unique: if the base is properly prepared and the instructions are followed, the adhesive joint will be practically unaffected by moisture. Most adhesives can be used for the following purposes:

  • laying parquet boards at home, in offices;
  • restoration of old wooden coverings;
  • Furniture assembly;
  • gluing wooden and plastic parts;
  • production of plywood products;
  • various repair work.

Depending on the specific type of waterproof glue, its properties and purpose may vary. The main types of Titebond adhesive compositions:

  1. Original Wood Glue. Adhesive with a red label is used for repair, restoration of musical instruments, and in the production of similar products. After drying, it forms a hard, low-plastic joint that does not interfere with the normal sound and does not change the properties of the wood.

  1. Titebond II Premium. This product has a blue sticker, it is also moisture resistant, and is not susceptible to solvents. The adhesive seam will be quite elastic, the initial setting will be more powerful. Due to its environmental friendliness, the glue can be used for gluing wooden cutting boards and other products in indirect contact with food. Also, glue number 2 is used for repairing indoor, garden, and other outdoor furniture, mailboxes, veneer products, laminate, plywood, fiberboard, chipboard. It is packaged in bottles, jars, buckets and even barrels with a volume of 0.037-100 liters.

  1. Titebond III Ultimate. Tightbond 3 glue with a green sticker is water-based, has an opaque consistency, and a cream color. All polymers in the composition are harmless to health, so the product is well suited for products that come into contact with food. Most often, glue is used in the food industry, but it can also be used for repairs and restoration of plywood, veneer, other types of wooden surfaces, as well as plastic. It is suitable for outdoor and indoor use, but is not suitable for products placed in water.

  1. Titebond Heavy. This is a super-strong assembly adhesive, available in a yellow tube. It contains artificial rubber, due to which it does not harm any type of wood, and can even be used for gluing wet, frozen wood. The finished adhesive seam is elastic, not subject to destruction, flexible, and does not deteriorate from mechanical stress. In addition to wood, this glue is suitable for gluing ceramics, slate, organic glass, natural and artificial stone, fiberglass, concrete, and ceramic parts.

Instructions for use

Titebond II adhesive should only be used in positive temperatures. Before gluing, the surfaces of products should be cleaned of oils, dirt, dust and grease, as well as other substances that would interfere with adhesion. It is necessary to free the surface from old paint. Before use, the glue is mixed, and its drying time can vary from 10 to 20 minutes. During this period, excess composition must be removed with a damp rag, and after drying, the glue can only be removed mechanically. Even after freezing, the composition will remain stable, but may change structure, becoming slightly viscous.

What else you need to know about Titebond wood glue

Titebond wood glue is characterized by indestructible cross-links, which create a stable chemical viscosity of the mixture. After drying, the layer is resistant to freezing, but it is worth remembering that it is flammable at a temperature of 100 ° C.

The composition adheres to surfaces instantly and firmly; the products only need to be pressed for some time. Titebond is resistant to elevated temperatures and solvents, and is easily removed before drying. The only drawback is the inability to use glue on surfaces that are wetted with water.

Characteristics

Titebond glue belongs to the professional category, but it can also be used at home, since the adhesion process does not require special skills and knowledge. You just need to follow safety rules and adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations for using the product.

Titebond wood glue has the following characteristics:

  1. Produced on the basis of aliphatic water-based resin.
  2. As a result of gluing, a reliable seam is formed, which is several times greater in mechanical strength than wood.
  3. The glue does not stick to metal surfaces, which makes it possible to use non-specialized, ordinary tools.
  4. It can be used on any type of wood; the age of the wood also does not matter.
  5. Effectively glues laminate, plywood, cardboard, paper and other wood products.
  6. Can be used as a sealant when sealing joints.
  7. Before hardening, the composition can be easily washed off with water, so correcting errors in the connection is very easy. For the same reason, Titebond cannot be used if the surfaces to be bonded are wet with water (wet).
  8. The glue has a viscous, viscous consistency, due to which polymerization occurs quickly, in 5-10 minutes, depending on environmental conditions (humidity, temperature).
  9. The Titebond composition cannot be used for adhesion of painted surfaces, as well as in rooms with high humidity and insufficient ventilation.
  10. There is no need to place the glued area under a press to improve adhesion characteristics.
  11. After hardening, the product becomes transparent, in a liquid state it has a light creamy tint.
  12. Resistant to solvents and freezing after drying (withstands up to –30° C), tolerates elevated temperatures up to +40°, but ignites at +100° C.
  13. After opening the package, the adhesive is suitable for use for two years, provided that it is effectively protected from contact with air and the air temperature is +20° C.
  14. The average consumption is 180 g per 1 cm2.
  15. Glues effectively at ambient temperatures from +10° C.

Advice! Before joining, thoroughly clean the surfaces of sawdust, dust, shavings and other debris.

The composition can be used when assembling furniture, including for gluing decorative plastic components. Titebond products are mostly used in the production of plywood, furniture, wood-based flooring, and finishing wood products.

Characteristics of Titebond III glue

Titebond wood glue comes in another variety, designated III. This polymeric water-dispersion composition is supplied in packages of different volumes for the convenience of the consumer and is intended for gluing veneer, fiberboard, plywood, wood, plastic, chipboard and MDF. The composition can be used for interior and exterior work, which makes it universal. The adhesive is water-resistant and can perfectly join laminated veneer, plastic and other above-mentioned materials. Application can be done using hot or cold methods, the composition is non-toxic and has no solvents. It can be used even at low temperatures.

Instructions for using Titebond 3 glue

Titebond 3 adhesive can be used at a minimum temperature of +8 °C. Approximately 190 g of composition will be needed per 1 m2. Within 10-20 minutes you can change the position of the part, which will depend on external conditions. Before applying the adhesive, surfaces should be checked for moisture and cleaned of dirt, loose material and other materials that could reduce the intensity of adhesion. It is noteworthy that this Titebond wood glue can be used for gluing products that will come into contact with food during operation. It is not recommended for use on underwater connections.

The composition is allowed to be used only in intensively ventilated areas, and if it comes into contact with the skin, the mixture may cause irritation. If you experience dizziness and unpleasant effects, you should immediately get into fresh air and, if necessary, consult a doctor. If Titebond glue gets into your eyes, you should rinse them with running water for 15 minutes. If it happens that the glue gets on the skin, you should remove it and wash the area with soapy water. The viscosity of the composition is 4200 mPa*s. Dry residue is 52%, density is 1.1 kg/l, acidity is 2.5 pH.
