20 stylish and modern floor painting ideas - add expressiveness to the base of your interior

Today, for visitors to our Design Museum, we will demonstrate a fresh and modern take on floor painting! While there are now many design options from carpet to linoleum, traditional painted flooring is making a comeback in modern designs.

Painting is a very convenient and economical way to bring a room into proper shape. A multimillion-dollar palette and a wide selection of latex and acrylic paints, differing in properties and structure, will allow you to create your own individual design.

You can make the floor neutral, or you can experiment with colors and patterns and turn it into a bright accent of the interior.

Having received advice from a professional, you can easily cope with this seemingly difficult task on your own.

What color to paint a wooden floor

A Buildfan reader named Anton asked a pressing question, which says - what color and how best to paint wooden parquet...
Today, many variations of carpet, parquet, and linoleum finishing are available. Nevertheless, the classic wooden floor is beginning to gain popularity again in the most expensive and luxurious interiors. It should be noted that painting is one of the most practical options for finishing a wooden floor. Despite the initially high aesthetic appeal of wood, the question of what color to paint a wooden floor is asked very often. The widest palette and huge selection of latex, water-based, acrylic paints allow you to create the perfect floor in any home. Depending on the style of the interior, you can make the wooden floor neutral or plain, and if you want to create a bright accent, then you can use the most unusual and bright colors and patterns.

Tools and materials for painting

Choosing paint is only part of the preparation for painting work. In addition to this, other materials will also be required. Putty is used to seal gaps and cracks. It can be oil-adhesive, acrylic or oil-based. The paste is selected based on the composition of the coating that will have to be worked with. For wooden floors, a homemade product made from wood glue mixed with sawdust is suitable.

You will also need a primer. This is a preparation intended to prepare the base for painting. It closes pores and improves adhesion. There are primers with special properties: antiseptics, fire retardants, etc. The choice of primer is determined by the flooring material. It is desirable that its color, which is usually white or gray, be close to the tone of the coloring mixture. Then it won't show through.

The most commonly used painting tool is a roller. You definitely need a tray into which the coloring paste is poured in portions. You need brushes of different sizes. They are used to paint complex areas, baseboards, and all small fragments. You will need masking tape to cover areas not to be painted, a spatula and a chisel for preparatory operations.

Solid wood floor options

So, what color should you paint your wood floors? It’s worth saying right away that if color saturation of the space is necessary, then you should use paint that will withstand the same palette of the floor, ceiling and walls. Plain wooden parquet will be an excellent solution in interiors with contrasting pieces of furniture and other bright accessories.

The question of choosing a color for a wooden floor is always individual. For example, if you need to create a mood of freshness and tranquility, then there is nothing better than a noble white color - a white wooden floor will look eclectic and extravagant. White color is ideal if the house has modern furniture - in this case, a snow-white floor will advantageously emphasize the design of the entire room.

How to choose the color of doors in the interior?

The combination of the color of doors and floors is very important for the harmonious perception of space, since the theater begins with a hanger.

Doors fit harmoniously into the interior when their shade matches the color scheme of the floor or contrasts with it.

  • One color palette of doors and floors should be chosen for hallways when several doors open into one room, this way you can avoid confusion.
  • The emphasis on the doors can be made using contrasting shades of the doors and floors, but in this case, the doors should be combined with the color of the furniture in the room.
  • The plinth should be the same color as the trim to unify the composition.

The combination of the color of the floor and the doors in the interior gives us an idea of the room. You can choose a single palette or a contrasting combination, but try to adhere to the main rule - no more than five different colors in the interior.

Patterned wood floor colors

From monochromatic options we move on to more complex ones - patterned floors. A wooden floor can be painted white and then stained with black to create a Dalmatian pattern. Such a spotted floor will fit perfectly into the interior if the latter is designed in a minimalist manner.

A wooden floor will look elegant and sophisticated if you apply stripes to it. The stripes can be either black and white - if you want to create a classic and strict style, or multi-colored. The last option is especially suitable for a children's room. It should be noted that the stripes should use contrasting colors; they can be either very bright or neutral.

Checkered is another ideal option for painting a wood floor. A gray and white check will create a neutral mood, while a black and wood check will go well with light walls. A wooden floor will look stylish and unusual if you use a square pattern as a painting option. In this case, white color will be ideal in a duet with delicate green shades; by the way, wooden floors in light shades harmonize very well with black and white wallpaper.

Hardwood floors are an excellent choice for a private home. Wood brings warmth and texture to living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and family rooms, and hardwood floors are easy to maintain once installed. Hardwood does not accumulate dirt and dust like carpeting, which makes larch flooring a more environmentally friendly option, especially if people who suffer from allergies live in the house. You should find a color for the walls that complements the hardwood, the overall effect should liven up the parquet flooring and give the interior the necessary accent. What color to paint a wooden floor should be considered at the very beginning of planning a renovation.

You can paint a wooden floor in the boldest colors

The combination of a gray floor in the interior

Gray color is dearly loved by designers for its ability to be combined with most shades. It will add softness and texture to pastel palettes, dilute dark ones and soften complex colors, making them more natural.

A soft ash shade is irreplaceable in rooms with contrasting color schemes.

It removes aggression, makes a smooth transition in the contrasts of black and white, white and red, black and red.

Interiors that combine different variations of gray are stylish and elegant. In this case, it is better to make the floor in the lightest shade available or in the darkest. Bright details can add bright accents to a monochrome room. The latter can be yellow, orange, crimson, turquoise.

It is better if there are textiles, accessories, and finishing elements in a bright design. An excellent option is to paint one of the walls (or part of it) in the specified colors.

The gray floor forms a harmonious tandem with lavender, pale pink shades, as well as wine, pastel blue and green colors.

If we are talking about a room in a classic style, then it is recommended to use dark gold as a decoration.

It is recommended to combine a gray floor with doorways of the same shade. Another win-win option is a combination of a light gray floor with doorways and wenge or oak colored panels.

Thanks to the ash tone of the floor, wenge looks even softer and more elegant, and the oak shade looks even deeper and more majestic. By the way, wenge looks good with both warm and cold gray.

If the floor is a very light gray-beige, then milky, light brown and pastel doorways and doors will also work.

Gray color is capricious in combination with cold shades. The only exceptions are the blue and light blue palette.

How to choose a wall color based on the color of a wooden floor

If you're planning on redecorating a room, then it's time to head to your local retail store and look at thousands of paint samples. Playing with colors is a fun pastime, so you need to start with the store - it is in the store that you can find the color you need. However, using this approach will limit your options. There are thousands of paint colors available today - many more color options than the flooring, fabric or accessories options in the store. Open the Internet - if you are looking for something unusual, then this is the best option.

Kingdom of White

Starting your search right away with paint color is not very convenient. It is much more convenient to initially build the entire room - from the bottom up. First find the color of the floor, then the furniture, and then the windows. Then you need to think about the color of the walls. By this time there will already be floor samples, as well as furniture fabric and curtain samples. You'll be able to choose a wall color to match or contrast with the tones that have been chosen for the rest of the room - making it much easier to work with.

Wall colors that go well with light hardwood floors

What color to paint a wooden floor is always an individual question, but a few basic rules can be drawn. Lightweight hardwood floors are a popular choice. They hide dirt and dust, which bothers a huge number of people. If you have concerns about dark floors making the room look too gloomy, you can create an accent light directly on the ceiling to brighten up the room's ambiance even more. There are many options when choosing wall colors. Here are some tips:

White paint

White looks clean and neat on walls. If stark white looks “clinical” to your taste, then you can soften it slightly with light shades. Gray colors are softer than just white, but they also pair well with light hardwoods for a clean, bright look in the room.

Gray paint

If white seems too much, then you can try gray - it is also neutral. Choose the exact shade for your room. Gray can have several shades, and you need to choose the one that is most suitable for a given interior. For example, you can find paint in a true gray color without any impurities. Some gray paints have blue, pink, purple or even green undertones.

To determine the shade of gray, compare it with the shades on the color chart. Choose a tone that complements the wood tones. Spend some time carefully examining your hardwood to determine its shades. If you prefer a neutral color on your walls, consider choosing paint in the same color family as your hardwood shades.

To determine the shades of hardwood, place them together to get an idea of how the wood will look in the final interior. What color should I paint a wooden floor? Is it warm or gold? Cool, gray or ashen? The answer will help determine the final wall color.

For cool tones, paint your walls blue or green. Choose wall shades to avoid a yellow tint. If you find it difficult to find a suitable green or blue color, take a piece of your floor to the store. A paint retailer can help you find the right shade.

For warm floor tones, choose yellow tones. Consider a palette that includes soft cream tones.

Wooden floors are even installed in garages

How to choose a wall color for cherry wood if the floor is wooden

The cherry wood is stunning. She is rich and attractive. Make sure the color you choose for the walls matches the entire space. Here are some tips for choosing walls to complement your tile floors:

Be careful when choosing paint colors - don't risk adding too much yellow to green shades.

Blue paint

Choose blue tones to create a cozy and peaceful space. Blue is a popular color for walls in modern homes and can certainly be paired with hardwood floors. Vibrant blues and blues complement the tile hardwood floors beautifully, and the blue tones create a peaceful and inviting space. Consider this combination for a bedroom, dining room or family room.

Green paint

Consider cool blue shades for the living room, especially if your goal is to make your home a safe haven where you and your family can retreat and unwind at the end of the day. Cool colors on the walls have a certain calming effect. What color should I paint the wooden floor in this case? Be bold and use warm colors, perhaps even a little unexpected.

A warm space with red or terracotta walls looks great. You don't have to stick with a cool color to make your walls attractive when working with hardwood floors. Warm colors will also work well, so don't be afraid to paint your walls red or terracotta. If you're concerned that the color might be too intense, consider painting one wall a brighter shade and the other three walls different colors. In other words, create an accent wall. Gray or white are neutral tones that always pair perfectly with darker colors, and the contrast will make darker walls stand out even more. Use an accent wall to show a focal point in the room, such as a fireplace, chair or cover wall.

Colors to Consider When Using Dark Hardwood Floors

Dark hardwood floors are a great choice if you want to decorate a large room or your home has an open concept or open floor plan. Once a dark floor is installed, it will visually make the space appear smaller.

Before installing a dark hardwood floor, consider the light sources in the space. Does the room have a lot of natural light? If not, are there lights? If there is no natural light, make sure that artificial light sources provide enough light, otherwise dark hardwood will appear too gloomy. What color should I paint a wooden floor? Any dark tones and their derivatives - gray, black, cherry.

Here are some tips for choosing walls that complement dark hardwood floors:

Features of applying varnish

On the one hand, it may seem that varnishing is no different from painting. But in reality the processes differ markedly from each other.

Firstly, if it is better to take a roller for paint, then for varnish it is better to use a soft, wide brush. Secondly, it is important to varnish at a temperature of 15-25 degrees above zero.

Let's get started:

  1. Carefully move the polish around inside the can. If you plan to use a brush, you don’t have to pour the contents into the tray.
  2. Apply the first coat along the grain of the wood, carefully going through each joist and spreading the varnish thinly. Leave until completely dry (time indicated on the package).
  3. After the first layer, you may notice that the fibers have risen a little - take a block, fine sandpaper and go over the entire floor area to remove unevenness.
  4. Carefully remove any accumulated dust using a vacuum cleaner and a clean cloth. It is recommended to wash a smooth polished floor 2-3 times.
  5. Apply a second coat of varnish.
  6. Sand and wash the floor again.
  7. Apply a third coat of varnish. It is essential for pine floors. Hardwood can only be coated twice.

Important! The finishing coating is not sanded: to remove the sticky layer, it is enough to wash the floor after drying with a soap solution.

Dark wood floor

If you prefer more color on your walls, you have several options. Black is neutral, so you can pair almost any color with it. Consider cool blues and greens as wall colors. A dark shade on a wall with a dark floor tends to “close out” the space.

Walls of flowers that look attractive with oak hardwood

Oak parquet floors are an excellent choice for a private home. They give you several options when it comes to wall colors.

Wall paints for red oak

With its warm tone, you can pair red oak flooring with colors such as yellow or apricot to create a warm effect in the room. Be bold and paint your walls red. Blue is also a great choice for red oak hardwood floors. You can also consider pastels, aquamarines and darker shades. What color should I paint a wooden floor? Red and all its derivatives.

Wall color for white oak

White oak flooring may appear discolored, depending on the finish. You can paint the walls a rich charcoal color or match the color of the floor to create a stylish, formal look in your living or dining room. This decking color also looks good with a wood base.

The combination of white floors in the interior

All shades, from light to dark, go well with white. The selection of companion colors will influence the subsequent perception of the interior.

The classic combination is white with black and red. The contrast of shades allows you to highlight details and correctly place accents. An example would be the design of the floor in white, the walls in black, and the presence of red accents. Or, alternatively, a combination of black and white tiles.

White plus sunny orange and yellow lift your spirits and charge you with energy when choosing bright shades. Pale yellow and washed out orange and white look much calmer and more elegant.

The emphasis on purple is often made by creative individuals who have many interests and are constantly developing. The perception of design in blue and green, with the presence of a white floor, also depends on the selected shades.

It can be contrasting and catchy with bright blue and sleepy green, or create the impression of a romantic and soft atmosphere when choosing soft blue and light light green tones.

A multifaceted classic combination can be white, which is mixed with a brown range of colors. At the same time, the result is warm, creamy chocolate combinations that do not irritate the eyes and can serve as the basis even for a classic interior.

Choosing the type of paint and impregnation

Wood products require constant care to maintain their good condition and original appearance. Now in the markets you can see a huge variety of products that will help preserve the tree.

Paints

Enamel

After complete drying, such products form a durable film on the surface that has its own texture.

Enamel consists of oil, solvent and resin. Thanks to the presence of oil in the composition, the enamel covers not only wood, but also metal well. Has good wear resistance. Resins make it suitable for processing any wood. This product is suitable for painting the floor on a veranda in conditions of high humidity. Even salty sea air will not harm such a surface.

In order to cover the floor with enamel, read the instructions before finishing. Keep in mind that the floor must be perfectly smooth and level. You can apply the enamel with any tool that is convenient for you.

The composition has one drawback - its service life outdoors is no more than one season. It will begin to crack and chip, after which you will have to completely renew the decking.

Acrylic paint

The composition includes acrylic resin and polymers. Acrylic creates a durable film on the surface. The product not only has a large palette, but also has good resistance to friction.

Polyurethane

It consists of dye, solvent, polyurethane. The viscous composition provides dense coverage and high protection for wood.

Alkyd

It also has a resin base with the addition of glycerin. The composition dries quickly and forms a durable and elastic surface.

So, how to paint a wooden floor on an open veranda? You can choose any one; all of the listed types are suitable for open surfaces.

Protective impregnations

This mixture can be called one of the most capricious. Varnish is needed precisely when it is important to maintain the smoothness and strength of the wood.

For the floor, it is better to choose a varnish based on polymer resins. However, due to changes in temperature, as well as weather conditions, it will still begin to crack and break off from the surface within a year or two.

Oil (wax)

This is the most popular type of wood flooring treatment. The substances are rubbed into the floor and saturate it. They do not form any films, but on the contrary, they oil the wood, emphasizing its entire structure.

When choosing a composition, it is important to focus on what type of wood you are going to cover. On the labels you can immediately find the application method that is suitable for a particular wood.

Both products can be called universal, since they are suitable for almost any wood and are intended for outdoor use. But if you want to preserve the texture of wood, it is better to choose oil. If the durability of the coating is your priority, your choice is varnish.

How to paint yourself?

Painting a wood floor is no more difficult (and maybe easier!) than any other surface. The main thing is to follow simple step-by-step instructions:

  1. Cover all areas that need to be protected from pigment with paper tape. Including walls adjacent to floor boards.
  2. Open a can of paint and stir the contents well to evenly distribute the fillers. Pour some into a cuvette.
  3. Use a small thin roller or a suitable brush to outline the room along the walls.
  4. Use a large roller to paint the entire floor area, moving from the far corner to the exit. Leave until completely dry.
  5. Apply a second coat of paint, repeating steps 3 and 4.

Important! If you plan to install floor skirting boards to be painted in the color of the floor, they are installed immediately after the preparatory work and painted simultaneously with the boards.

After completing all work, give the paint at least 24 hours - during this time the coating will become harder and will not be scratched if accidentally hit by furniture.

Advice! Before moving furniture in, check the quality of the floor paint: if, when the boards have dried, the material has run off a little and bald spots have formed, it is better to cover them up right away.

To make sure that anyone can handle painting and not miss a single stage of the work, watch the video:

Useful theory - why you need to paint floors

The natural properties of wood make this material soft and vulnerable, causing rapid destruction of the structure under the influence of external factors. Therefore, the board requires additional protection. The key task of paint for a wooden floor is to protect the material from moisture penetration, prevent rotting, and the formation of mold and mildew.

Country houses have long ceased to serve as a kind of warehouse or a one-time vacation spot for those who are tired of living in a city apartment. Therefore, the country house interior began to be approached in detail; the design of country houses has turned into an independent design unit, where every element is important, including the choice of paint for floor coverings.

Why is it important to paint the floor:

Paint and varnish materials make it possible to make the interior original, opening up hundreds of ideas for design, ornament and color options.

Painting recommendations

A self-leveling floor can be painted after it has completely dried and moisture has stopped evaporating. Check this with a moisture meter or using plastic film. It is laid on the floor and after a day the presence of condensation is checked.

After the floor is cleaned of dust, all defects that may appear after painting and spoil the appearance are eliminated. The cracks are covered with a thick solution from the same dry mixture, and the tubercles are polished.

Roller painting

For all types of floors, except epoxy, the surface must be primed before painting.

Photo gallery of varieties and methods of making plain colored self-leveling floors:

They work with paints at temperatures of 5-30 degrees. They can be applied with a roller or compressor. Spraying produces the most uniform and consistent coverage. Painting is done in two layers. To obtain a self-leveling floor of uniform color, make the first layer thin, trying to apply the color evenly, without spills. The second layer is applied one day after the first. Final polymerization of the coating occurs after two weeks.

Until recently, this option was the most favorite and, in principle, the only way to paint the floor. The paint consists of natural elements: drying oil, oil, color pigments, therefore it is considered a safe dye for health.

The benefits also include:

  • Fire resistance and moisture protection of the coating:
  • Easy to care and apply.

At the same time, oil paints are seriously inferior to modern compositions in terms of:

  • Durability;
  • Wear resistance;
  • Preservation of appearance.

Most oil paints are not capable of providing a bright finish. This point should be taken into account by people who find familiar colors boring and ordinary.
