Types and features of latex paint for facades: review and comparison

Latex facade paint - what is it?

Where is the dye used?

Latex is the sap of rubber plants, which is a dispersion (suspension) of particles of natural rubber polymer. But since the cost of such paints would be extremely high, instead of a natural base, manufacturers use inexpensive synthetic polymers.

In other words, latex paints are paints that are an aqueous dispersion of an artificial polymer. In such a dispersion, water not only does not dissolve the polymer particles, but also does not allow them to stick together.

After painting the surface, the moisture gradually evaporates, leaving behind a durable film - the result of the approach and sticking together of particles of the film-forming polymer.

Latex paints are used to treat both internal and external surfaces. But most often, craftsmen use latex material where particularly high demands are placed on the reliability, durability and cleanability of the applied coatings.

Reviews: advantages and disadvantages of paint

Like any other dyes, latex-based paints have both advantages and disadvantages.

Experts include the main advantages of the material:

  • the ability to create matte and glossy surfaces;
  • long service life;
  • moisture resistance;
  • reliability, durability of the coating;
  • minimum drying time;
  • the possibility of applying a second layer a few hours after the first;
  • vapor permeability.

At the same time, the main disadvantage of latex dyes is their high cost, but the financial investment is more than compensated by the high quality characteristics of the coating.

Let's clarify the terminology

Acrylic-based latex paint is an original paint and varnish material (LPM) for painting work.
Latex is derived from the sap of the rubber tree. Currently, technologies have been developed for the production of artificial substitutes for natural material obtained from vegetation grown in the humid subtropics. Thin elastic films of latex paint (LP) are obtained after polymerization in air of a water-dispersed base. High adhesion to the surface allows the use of such paints and varnishes for application to ceilings and walls.

Which latex paint for the facade to choose?

How stable and reliable the coating will be directly depends on the properties of the polymer on the basis of which the latex façade paint was made.

The most common types of latex dyes are:

  • polyvinyl acetate;
  • butadiene styrene;
  • acrylic silicone;
  • acrylic.

Polyvinyl acetate dyes are made on the basis of PVA adhesive emulsion. Paints of this type are distinguished by their low price, almost complete absence of odor and good adhesion to the surface being painted.

The main advantage of this material is that it can be easily washed off from working tools and hands. People often call this color a water emulsion.

Distinctive features of butadiene styrene paints are moisture and wear resistance.

However, such dyes fade quite quickly when exposed to direct sunlight, so they are of little use for painting external surfaces. The cost of styrene-butadiene paints is slightly higher than PVA dyes.

Acrylic silicone coating has good moisture and light resistance, as well as high wear resistance, so such dyes are excellent for outdoor work.

At the same time, experts consider acrylic paints to be the highest quality latex paints, but such dyes are the most expensive.

Color for wood

Latex wood paints are used for painting both inside and outside houses. Although latex paints for exterior and interior use differ slightly in the ratio of thickener to pigments, they meet the same standards.

A distinctive feature of latex paints, which explains their use for wooden surfaces, is their high air permeability, thanks to which the wood can “breathe” and thereby last much longer.

At the same time, latex does not prevent the growth of bacteria, which can be fatal for the wood and lead to its rapid wear.

For this reason, it is not recommended to use latex paint to coat wooden surfaces in rooms with high levels of humidity.

Paint for concrete

Water-repellent paints for concrete surfaces are most often made on a latex basis - they are suitable for interior and exterior use.

High-quality material guarantees protection for ten years. A fully finished coating can withstand a water wall pressure of 7m/dm2.

Such compositions are applied to vertical surfaces above and below ground level.

Brick color scheme

Due to the structural features of brick, latex facade paint used for finishing brick facades must have the following properties:

  • vapor permeability;
  • waterproof;
  • UV resistance;
  • durability.

Latex paints have all the necessary characteristics, so they are ideal for painting brick facades.

At the same time, the created film does not allow the formation of “efflorescence” on the brick surface, so the use of such paints is an excellent way to combat the formation of saline solutions on facades.

In addition, latex materials are highly resistant to alkalis, which allows the surface to be painted within a month after the construction of the building.

For ceiling and walls

Dulux 3D White

Characterized by the presence of a 3D effect. There are quite a few color options, in particular, there is a dazzling white color that can visually significantly increase the space even in a small room: it may seem that the walls are much wider and the ceilings are much higher. Domestic products have a neutral odor, so there is no need to use respiratory protection when working with this composition indoors. One liter of such paint is enough to finish up to 13 squares of surface. One layer of material dries completely in 4 hours.

Features of working with this type of paint

As practice shows, latex paints in cans often have a very thick consistency, so applying such material can be very difficult.

As already mentioned, the solvent in this case is water, but before diluting the paint, it is extremely important to mix it thoroughly, trying to lift all the clumps from the bottom of the jar.

After the latex façade paint has been thoroughly mixed, you can gradually pour water into it. In order to achieve the desired consistency and not add too much water, the paint must be stirred constantly.

When the dye reaches the required consistency, it needs to be given a few minutes to infuse. After this, the paint needs to be mixed again, if necessary, add a tinting paste, which will give the composition the desired shade.

How to apply paint?

The process of working with latex materials is not much different from working with other types of paints, and consists of the same basic steps:

  • cleaning the wall from the old coating, eliminating existing flaws;
  • priming, treatment with deep penetration impregnation;
  • puttying;
  • applying another layer of primer to prevent the formation of mold and mildew (optional);
  • applying the first layer of paint;
  • drying the first layer;
  • applying a second coat of paint (optional).

Depending on the ambient temperature, latex-based paint can take anywhere from an hour to a day to dry completely, after which a second coat of dye can be applied if necessary.

The principle of working with latex paints is described in detail in the following video:

Types of paint based on binding polymers

Sometimes there is misunderstanding among producers and consumers. Artificial latex can mean different bases. Therefore, labels may contain additional information about the actual polymer used to make the film.

Acrylic-based latex paint must contain the following main ingredients:

  1. Polymer binders. Most often they are hydrocarbon molecules that form insoluble films after contact with atmospheric oxygen. They are obtained after liquefying propane followed by treatment with nitrogen and acids. Different polymers have different adhesion (stickiness) to building material surfaces.
  2. A pigment that is added to a composition to obtain a specific color shade. Using the RAL scale (universal international color scale), more than ten thousand different color solutions can be created. Most manufacturers produce acrylic latex wall paints in white. When performing painting work, the user adds the necessary dyes to achieve the desired shade.
  3. Filler is used as an additive that increases the hiding power of paint. Depending on the type of filler, the type of painting material may change from matte to glossy. Most often, it is also a polymer, the particle size is quite large (up to 30...60 microns). It determines the thickness of the film. Some manufacturers use calcium and magnesium compounds; their presence in the composition allows the paints to “breathe” - to carry out gas exchange between the air and the building structure.
  4. Solvent is a liquid component that ensures paint stability. After application to the surface to be painted, the solvent partially penetrates inside, and most of it evaporates. After the humidity decreases, individual molecules of the binders begin to undergo a polymerization reaction.
  5. Supplements Manufacturers often keep secret the additive ingredients they use. They can only be detected in specialized laboratories. A number of additives allow acrylic latex ceiling paints to be stored at subzero temperatures. Others increase adhesion to metals or plastic materials. Third, they increase protective properties against exposure to open fire (fire-fighting properties).

Before starting repairs, the user has a choice not only of the manufacturer (some brands are constantly advertised in the media). You can select the necessary material for rooms with specific properties. So, for special occasions, acrylic latex paint for the bathroom is used. A different type will be used for the kitchen or loggia.

Polyvinyl acetate paint

PVA emulsion is used as a binder. The advantages of this type of paint include the following indicators:

  • If necessary, the paint coating is applied with rollers, brushes and spraying from spray guns. For the air application method, you can reduce the viscosity by diluting the dye with clean water;
  • when painting twice, the consumption is less than 300 g/m²;
  • coverage is high, even white latex paint over acrylic completely “hides” the previous color;
  • the user, if desired, can add his own filler (chalk, sand, alabaster) to the polyvinyl acetate paint. Then the surface is leveled using the appropriate tool.

Butadiene styrene latex paint

Natural gas is used in the production of such paints and varnishes. This binder was created in the early thirties of the last century in Germany. The appearance of such paint made it possible to quickly change the appearance of military equipment. The aviators showed particular interest. The plane was painted over several colors in the required colors, and the next day it was ready to carry out any mission. The weight of the device increased by only 0.6...0.9 kg (for aviation equipment this is an excellent indicator).

Even tanks and other self-propelled guns quickly changed their appearance. The captured equipment was taken to Ufa, where the paint and varnish plant began producing construction paints based on styrene-butadiene binders.

Users note the advantages of such paints:

  • they can be used for painting facades. The resulting film resists temperature changes. Solar irradiation does not destroy the surface layer for several years;
  • after drying, films are formed, the thickness of which does not exceed 5...8 μm;
  • Double coloring allows you to hide previous colors.

Acrylic silicone paint

The search for effective dyes for wet rooms led developers to the creation of binders using acrylic and silicone compounds. The two polymers form an elastic structure that can change shape after polymerization. Therefore, when painting rooms with high humidity with these materials, there is no destruction of the films on the surfaces.

Under license from the developers, the carrier base for such paints is produced in China. The process is quite energy-intensive (some of the technological processes occur at high temperatures and consume thermal energy), so the price of these materials is high.

Silicone-based latex acrylic matte paint is in demand for children's institutions, medical complexes, and sports facilities. Builders prefer to use these materials, as they guarantee high quality of work performed.

Acrylic latex paint

The classic material was developed at approximately the same time in different countries (Sweden, Finland, Belgium). Manufacturers from Finland sell not only ready-made packaged paints. They sell a supporting base, on the basis of which it is easy to organize your own production. It is necessary to organize the introduction of additional ingredients obtained locally, and then package them in suitable containers and put the finished product on the market.

Attention! Acrylic latex paint is produced in different parts of the world (Finnish technology is the basis of these productions).

The main positive property of this type of paint is its high adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces. Another positive indicator is noted: the film of the paint layer remains elastic for several years.

Rubber acrylate-latex paint

This dye contains:

  • latex (natural or artificial);
  • high boiling alcohols, ethylene glycol is usually used. The presence of such antifreeze expands the temperature range for using paintwork;
  • water is necessary to regulate the conditions of use of the material;
  • sulfurous acid. Most of it evaporates after applying paint to the surface. Some of the sulfur remains. It promotes polymerization of the latex base;
  • fungicides protect paint films from microbiological destruction;
  • pigments and fillers set the shade and form the thickness of the films on the objects being painted.

The main use of such paints and varnishes is painting external surfaces. When producing profiled roof decks, we focus on the use of similar materials. The coating lasts for several decades.

Acrylate-latex based paint has the ability to fill minor damage. The film remains mobile for quite a long time, so the ability to level the surface layer remains for quite a long time.

Users note the advantages:

  • water resistance. The coating protects against atmospheric moisture;
  • frost resistance. Even prolonged exposure to frost at –40…–60 ⁰С does not change the properties. Similar paints are used for equipment for Arctic and Antarctic expeditions;
  • the price-quality ratio for such paints is at a high consumer level.

Important! Modern roofs try to be painted with just such paints. Lightfast pigments maintain color saturation. They do not fade over time.

How much does latex facade paint cost?

The cost of facade latex paints depends on factors such as: manufacturer, brand, region of sale, packaging, type of paint.

Currently, the modern construction market offers a huge range of paints and varnishes, so the price range is quite wide. For clarity, here is an example:

  • “Lakra” – 1100 rubles for 14 kilograms;
  • “Marshall Akrikor” – 700 rubles for 2.5 liters;
  • “Dulux Bindo Facade BW” – 1300 rubles for 2.5 liters.

It does not crack due to temperature changes and does not fade in the sun. The only negative is the rather pungent smell, but this is not critical for outdoor work.

    Advantages and disadvantages

    • For concrete, brick and wood
    • Fits well, high adhesion
    • Affordable price
    • Moisture and dirt resistant
    • Bright colors that don't fade in the sun
    • Quite a strong smell

    Advantages and disadvantages

    Latex coatings have a number of advantages that determine their demand:

    1. Short drying time (within one to two hours).
    2. Use in places with high air humidity (bathrooms, shower locker rooms).
    3. No pungent odor when drying (you can do home renovations without disturbing others).
    4. Non-flammability. In case of fire, such paints do not emit toxic gases.

    Among the disadvantages of water-based paints and varnishes is the temperature of their application, which must be above zero. At a temperature below the critical index of MTP film formation, individual particles of the polymer, which are in a dispersed state, do not combine into a film on the surface, but become vitrified. This coating is easy to peel.

    Types of polymer binders

    Among chemists, the term “latex” has two meanings. One is Hevea juice or its synthetic substitute made from isoprene, urethane, styrene butadiene, acrylic, etc. polymer. The second, derived from English. latex is a dispersed emulsion of polymer particles in water. Acrylic paint is nothing more than an emulsion of dispersed particles of acrylic or its derivatives: acrylates (polymers) dissolved in water, i.e. This is pure latex paint, if you adhere to the official terminology.

    To avoid confusion in the future, let us clarify what is meant when a comparison is made as to which paint is better, latex or acrylic. Modern water-soluble paints may contain acrylic copolymers (acrylates) or styrene-butadiene copolymers as binders. A class of paints based on a dispersion of acrylates dissolved in water is called “acrylic paint”. And dyes with butadiene-styrene copolymers began to be called “latex paint.”

    A different name for a water-based emulsion does not change the essentially identical composition of the components of the coloring matter, which includes:

    • binders - substances responsible for adhesion, resistance to mechanical stress, service life of the applied paint layer and other characteristics, both physical and operational. They can be polymers or copolymers (the composition contains several types of polymers, including both acrylates and styrene-butadiene polymers);
    • solvent - in water-emulsion dispersions it is water;
    • pigments or colors - fine powder or liquid that colors the composition in any color or tone (more than 200 varieties);

    A rare correct description.

    • stabilizers - additives that improve the quality characteristics of paint or determine the scope of its application (for external or internal work, application to metal, wood, glass, etc.);
    • fillers - substances responsible for the level of gloss of the surface of the applied paint layer (matte, semi-matte, glossy, etc.).

    Dulux Ultra Resist “Kitchen and Bathroom” has all the necessary qualities for a moisture-resistant mixture - it is not afraid of moisture, steam, is easy to clean, and is resistant to mold. If we compare it with other latex paints for the bathroom and kitchen, then in terms of water and dirt-repellent properties it surpasses many analogues. This is due to the fact that the composition contains wax, which, after drying, forms a durable impenetrable film. When opening the package, you may be confused by the pungent odor from the antifungal components, but this is not dangerous and the paint is completely harmless to health. The consumption is economical, and given the high cost, this is a very important point.
